The reason Damon and Elena share that understanding between is because of the fact that their decisions are motivated par l’amour and it is not about whether it is wrong ou right, all social rules go out the door. One of the reasons why I ship Damon and Elena is because they both re-awaken each other. Elena re-awakens Damon’s humanity and Damon re-awakens the girl who died the moment her parents died. Damon and Elena both take each other out of their safety zone. They are real with each other. I believe that even though we see Elena is this sweet and a compassionate girl, I think that we have not seen a lot from Elena because she Lost herself after her parents died, she no longer has fun. I think Elena holds back a lot of herself. She stays within a comfort zone. I think Elena loves Stefan deeply I think he provides a sûr, sans danger love. I think her l’amour with Stefan is an escape from her past life. Her life before her parents died. Stefan doesn’t remind Elena of her old life. That life with which Elena believes and has convinced herself that caused her parents death. But I think death has a serious impact on one’s personality and I think that Elena will seek out a different kind of l’amour with time. No one is static and what one once needed at one point with time and with growth its no longer needed as much and this is the reason why people seek out different kind of loves until they get it right. Elena she’s 17 years old she has much to learn when it comes to l’amour and with age comes that. No one knows what their future holds, they live for the moment and hope that the future it will always be that way but again no one knows what their future holds.
In both the livres and show, Elena is like a FLAME and all toi need the right person to light the match and make that flame burn. And I see Damon as that person because he draws out different sides to Elena that she does not reveal to most. She can be quite cheeky, she’s fierce matter of fact she’s really fierce its not shown often but its there, we’ve seen it, but she keeps that side to herself well under wraps. We’ve even seen a bit of manipulative traits on Elena part and she only shows these sides of herself to Damon.

4.In ALL MY CHILDREN she gets so damn jealous to se damon and rebecca that she spills damon's drinkand does not bother that stefan is standing there aswell.
5.In MURDER OF ONE stefan notices that elena is concerned of DAMON plus than anything.She tells him to annuler the plan as she cannot risk Damons life.
all these instances clarify to stefan that she has got feelings for someone he can never hurt {his own brother}
