WHY THE "VAMPIRE DIARIES"–BOOKS par LISA JANE SMITH LEAD TO DAMON AND ELENA AS A COUPLE IN THE END:
1 The development of their feelings for each other and of their relationship would make no sense otherwise; everything could have stayed like it was at the beginning. But the relationship of Damon and Elena develops further and further instead of sticking to how it was at the start between them. Their l’amour for each other becomes stronger and stronger, and this intensification of the feelings that they have for each other still doesn’t seem to stop any time soon.
2 Elena feels already from the start a deep longing and has the feeling that she belongs somewhere else. (But right now everything looks strange to me, as if I don't belong here. It's me that's out of place. And the worst thing is that I feel there's somewhere I do belong, but I just can't find it. (Elena’s diary entry) [The Awakening, 1]) Even when she has a relationship with Stefan, she still feels that deep yearning, and also Damon, who knows her like nobody else and understands her better than anybody else can, sees that desire in her. ("You've tried everything else, and nothing has satisfied you. You're the girl who has everything, but there's always been something just out of your reach, something toi need desperately and can't have. That's what I'm offering you. […] You'll be happy as never before." [The Struggle, 1]) Only when Elena kisses Damon while not fighting the passion between them and their feelings for each other for the first time, she finally finds what she always wanted. (She realized that the way to calm this maelstrom was to become part of it, neither giving in nor forcing Damon to, but par meeting the passion in the undertow with what was inside her own heart. As soon as she did, the undertow became wind, and she was flying and not drowning. No, it was better than flying, better than dancing, it was what her cœur, coeur always yearned for. [The Return: Midnight, 28])
3 Damon realizes from the beginning that he and Elena belong together and fit together perfectly; and Damon knows human nature extremely well, understands Elena better than she herself does and – even if he sometimes avoids answering a question – never lies. Elena also feels that she belongs to Damon, but she fights it for a long time. And even Elena’s Friends notice that there is plus between her and Damon than they realized at first, and also Stefan sees the deep l’amour between Damon and Elena in the end; and neither her Friends nor Stefan like that conclusion, but they have to admit it anyway.

He wanted her to believe him, to trust him. He didn't want Elena as a one-night bleeder. He wanted her to choose him. With him as king, consort, whatever she wished. When she saw things plus clearly, she would understand that it didn't matter. That nothing mattered except them being together. "Past history aside, toi have to admit that we're the ones that belong together. toi and I are simply better suited to each other par nature. Deep down toi know that, because we understand each other. […] Don't toi feel that toi could be my princess of darkness - that something deep inside toi wants to? I can see it, if toi can't. Elena’s friends: Matt leaves Damon and Elena when they travel to the Dark Dimension, because he can’t ours to see them together any longer. Meredith and Bonnie, who follow Damon and Elena after hearing Matt’s report, watch Elena and Damon closely, mention their observations about those two to Elena several times, try to stop Damon and Elena – whenever possible – from getting even closer, but have to finally admit that Elena also wants Damon. Many of those moments can be found during the trip to and the time in the Dark Dimension – especially from the "tangle"-scene to the conversation between Meredith and Bonnie in the litter [The Return: Shadow Souls] – but there are also several other moments like those before and after that.
Stefan: "Damon is gone, Elena. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry if ... if I kept toi from being with him as much as toi wanted to. I'm sorry if I came between you. I didn't understand - how much toi loved each other. I do now." [The Return: Midnight, 41]
"I can't – It isn't – It's not me toi want." (Stefan to Elena) [The Return: Midnight, 43]
4 Elena thinks about Damon when she is with Stefan; she worries, feels guilty, remembers their adventures and things like that. When Elena is with Damon, she very often forgets Stefan, everything else and everybody else and is restlessly in the moment while there is nobody and nothing else than Damon for her.
5 Another point is how everybody behaves after someone’s death. Stefan can’t even say Katherine’s name after her death, what is no problem for Damon at all, while Damon can’t speak about Elena after her death, what Stefan – with grief – still can. Damon feeds after Elena’s death from girls who look like her, sees no sense left in his existence and longs to be caught so that he doesn’t influence the girls that nourish him. Elena destroys a moon with her Wings of Destruction after Damon’s death and can barely be stopped from destroying another world. She can’t ours an existence without Damon and almost loses her mind.
6 Whenever Elena gives in to her feelings without thinking, whenever she is confused ou whenever she puts her cœur, coeur above her mind, there is always only Damon for her – for example when she wakes up as a vampire [end of The Struggle/ beginning of The Fury] ou when she dreams (dance-dream [The Struggle, 8] and being-held-dream [The Return: Shadow Souls, 8]). It is the same when Elena reacts without thinking ou gives in to impulses ou instincts, and she says things many times without intending to say them which give away what she really feels inside. She usually gives in to Damon at first before stopping herself – if she even stops. Elena only tells herself that there is nothing, but her spontanious reactions, which happen because of her true feelings, give away what can be found inside of her. And what is on the inside and in one’s cœur, coeur is most important and the only thing that counts.
So, something whispers inside of her "I'm yours ..." during one of her tender moments with Damon [The Return: Shadow Souls, 17]. There is also the freudian slip "I'm here to collect my beloved Damon and Stefan is just helping me." [The Return: Shadow Souls, 30], and Elena calls Damon – (the first time) unintendedly – "darling" [The Return: Midnight, 2] and realizes par that herself that she is seriously in l’amour with him. And so, what is inside her leads for her to Damon: […] and her skyrocketing cœur, coeur brought a name to her lips. „Da…!“ [The Return: Midnight, 42].
7 She may also l’amour Stefan – chastely –, but Elena has really everything with Damon. She loves him and is deeply in l’amour with him; they have a strong attraction between them, and there is electricity (electrical impulses, currents and shocks, sparks, shockwaves …) between their bodies. Their bodies respond fiercely to each other, and Elena feels passion, ardor, excitement, longing, yearning and desire towards Damon. She feels welcome with him and experiences a strong sweetness and an extreme ecstasy. She is jealous when Damon has Bonnie with him, and Elena senses that Damon is her destiny (what he always knew) and that she wants to be with him forever [The Struggle, 16]. Damon and Elena have fun together, are happy when they are together, and it feels right for them to be together. Damon and Elena feel compassion for each other, forgive again and again what the other does and have a strong mutual sympathy. They protect and trust the other, understand and see through each other like nobody else can, and Elena is aware of the fact that she belongs to Damon [The Fury, 1] and that Damon belongs to her [The Return: Shadow Souls, 8].
Elena has feelings for Damon, she feels deeply for him, he means very much to her, she cares about and for him, he is in her heart, she feels restlessly drawn to him. Furthermore, Damon and Elena have a private frequency between them [The Return: Midnight, 38].
Elena calls Damon "darling" (and even continues doing so after realizing that she is madly in l’amour with him par calling him like that), "beloved" (several times) and the fiery breath beneath her wings [The Return: Nightfall, 37]. She knows that she has been born to be with him [The Fury, 1] and calls him her magic, her solace, her best beloved and her soul’s eternal mate [The Return: Shadow Souls, 8].
Elena can’t ours an existence without Damon, can’t even imagine a world without him with her, and something inside of her whispers to Damon "I'm yours ..." [The Return: Shadow Souls, 17].

She felt a surge of pure l’amour and appreciation for Damon. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 15]

She cared about Damon; she had been trying to get through to him ... With a small shock, that thought repeated itself with the force of a shaft of sunlight shooting through an unprotected vampire's body. She cared about Damon. She really did. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 6]
Elena felt herself begin to swoon with the intensity of the passion they had wrought between them. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 9]
It was dangerous work, this stealing in and out of darkened, cordoned-off – often locked – empty rooms: dangerous and strangely thrilling to Elena. Somehow, it seemed that fear and passion were plus closely related than she had fully realized. ou at least, it seemed that way with her and Damon. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 28]
Elena could never think of him without longing. [The Return: Midnight, 28]
And it is of course the same with what Damon feels for Elena.

Before, when he'd stopped himself from thinking of Elena, he had cut off any genuine passion ou desire. But he was doing this for Elena, as much as for himself. Elena couldn't be his Princess of Darkness if he couldn't be her Prince. [The Return: Midnight, 10]
In each one of them was a tiny sparkle of admiration that Damon had for her: pearls for her courage, for her intelligence, for her beauty. It seemed that there was no slightest motion she had made, no briefest word that she had said, that he had not noticed and locked in his cœur, coeur as a treasure. [The Return: Midnight, 28]
But I have to tell toi ... what I know toi already know ... How I fell in l’amour with toi ... […] Just that ... I loved once – just once, really, in my whole life. Can toi remember that I loved you? (Damon to Elena) [The Return: Midnight, 38])
And even Stefan – for whom some of these points are also true, but par far not all – has to admit in the end how much Damon and Elena l’amour each other [The Return: Midnight, 41]. That l’amour is already plus than obvious, even long before Damon and Elena confess it.
8 Further to mention is how the first encounters and the starts of the different relationships take place. When Stefan comes to Fell’s Church, he feels guilty because of Katherine’s death and is still devoted to her. Elena looks a lot like Katherine, and Stefan needs a while to notice the differences. Elena, the Queen of the highschool, is selfish and self-centered and claims all good-looking boys for herself. She reigns in the highschool and chooses the handsome Stefan as her suivant "victim". She does that only out of habit and it is a matter of her reputation at the school and about her pride. Elena feels humiliated, because Stefan keeps his distance to her; when her rival Caroline starts going out with Stefan first, Elena becomes extremly jealous – but only because of her status in school. As soon as Elena and Stefan become a couple anyway, they just decide that they only want to l’amour each other forever, for what there is no development at all and for what no reason can be seen; and it already doesn’t work out because of Elena’s feelings for Damon.
When Damon and Elena meet for the first time – in human form – [The Awakening, 10], she almost instantly gives in to him and is very close to s’embrasser him (without even knowing who he is), what she mentions herself later several times. When she begins bathing with vervain – what lessens Damon’s influence on her (although he can’t influence her like others even without vervain) –, Elena notices how much attraction there is between them which has nothing to do with Damon’s Supernatural powers. Elena has feelings for Damon right from the beginning although she fights them, and she feels drawn to him enormously, even when he is only evil for her – and these mutual feelings are always there throughout the livres and become even deeper and deeper with time.
9 A predetermination of Damon and Elena being together in the end can be seen. Damon knows that right away, and Elena and Damon as a couple make sense. They fit together plus than perfectly, are very much alike, and it just feels right when they are together; they are the Prince and the Princess of Darkness. Damon is the only (male) being that Elena can’t manipulate (Of all of the guys she'd known, Damon had been the only one Elena couldn't break. […] and eventually even the most challenging male could be mastered. Except one ... […] "But in any case, it's true, what toi were thinking earlier. […] I'm the only one, Elena. The only one toi haven't conquered. The only one toi can't manipulate. Intriguing, isn't it?" [The Return: Nightfall, 23 + 26]), while Elena is the only (female) human that Damon can’t influence without difficulties (Yes ... and toi ... toi astonished me par being the first girl I couldn't Influence right away. [The Return: Midnight, 38]). Damon and Elena are really made for each other, them being together is predetermined par destiny.

10 Damon and Elena don’t stop kissing, exchanging blood, melting into one while mingling their auras, sharing their minds and merging their souls together, lying in each other’s arms, caressing each other etc., although they feel extremly guilty about it. Their bad conscience doesn’t prevent their relationship from developing further and deeper all the time. Although they also have feelings for others and fight their love, their attraction and their yearning for each other, they continue none the less. Elena’s official relationship with Stefan doesn’t hinder Damon and Elena from going on with their own relationship. Just imagine how intensive an official relationship between Damon and Elena would be without anything hampering them, when they finally won’t have to fear feeling guilty and having a bad conscience anymore.
11 Although they fight their feelings for each other and try not to get closer and closer, Damon and Elena really can’t quit anything. Their relationship developes constantly, and they just can’t stop, although they desperately try to. The reactions of their bodies to each other are already enough to make a relationship between the two of them without any emotion absolutely impossible (although there are plus reasons which exclude such an emotionless way for them).
Elena is branded on Damon’s soul [The Return: Midnight, 2] and therefore always present for him, and Elena, who for a very long time doesn’t admit to herself that she really can’t be without Damon, becomes totally jealous as Bonnie – although par accident – gets into the Dark Dimension with Damon – instead of Elena herself [The Return: Midnight, 28]. Elena sends Bonnie and Stefan out of her room for the night because she hopes that Damon comes to her [The Return: Midnight, 28], and she allows Damon to put Stefan and Bonnie to sleep so that Elena can Kiss Damon [The Return: Midnight, 28]. Even when she fights her true feelings, Elena feels the calling between her cœur, coeur and Damon’s cœur, coeur from the start [The Return: Midnight, 28], and there is something inside her (a feeling for Damon) that is always present for her and that influences her relationship with Stefan [The Return: Midnight, 5].
I hadn't even realized myself how much Damon has come to mean to me. And I can't ... stop ... my feeling ... for him, even if he hates me now. (Elena’s diary entry) [The Return: Midnight, 1]

12 Damon’s and Elena’s bodies react extremely to each other from the beginning and can’t be stopped from doing so. Some of those responses are reactions and impulses which are caused par their emotions and montrer their true feelings, but – no matter what kind of responses there are – no encounter between the two of them takes place without any physical and emotional reaction; extreme tension and feu can always be found between them. There is an enormous attraction between Damon and Elena; they feel electricity, sparks and shockwaves when they touch each other – and sometimes even without touching at all – ou they cause such electric impulses in the body of the other (like for example in the "tangle"-scene [The Return: Shadow Souls, 11] and the following chapters).
Elena shivers, tingles, trembles, shakes, has tremors etc. (on the inside and on the outside) and experiences sensations and overwhelming emotions because of Damon, and something in her mind whispers to Damon "I'm yours ..." [The Return: Shadow Souls, 17], and their hearts call to each other [The Return: Midnight, 28].
Elena herself ou something inside of her melts when she is with Damon (like his insides also sometimes do when they are together), and she very often exposes her throat to Damon ou her gaze goes to his lips before lifting to his eyes. When she is with Damon, Elena’s lips part and her eyes drift shut and she feels good and experiences a pleasant heavyness etc.; and each of these feelings and reactions – including the shockwaves and the electricity – are always pleasing and usually very thrilling for her.
Damon and Elena usually look into each other’s eyes for a very long time, are always aware of the presence of the other and try to – ou desperately try not to – touch. Damon and Elena are in each other’s arms all of the time – that happens totally naturally and several times even without them noticing that they melt into an embrace again until they already hold each other. Elena’s legs give out ou her knees go weak when she is in Damon’s arms, and he always knows when that happens and supports her weight, holds her plus tightly ou picks her up before she can fall down; Damon and Elena (and their bodies) often do things in unison and their bodies are connected and harmonize perfectly.
And this time she knew that it was no Power that he was using, but simply the wildfire attraction between them. It was useless to deny it; her body responded to his. [The Struggle, 11]

13 Everything seems to be right when Damon and Elena are together. toi get the impression that everything is like it should be with them together, and Damon and Elena feel that, too. Their relationship is meant to be and they fit together perfectly and are plus than happy together. Without the other it feels wrong for them and something is missing; so Elena experiences an unbearable pain [The Return: Midnight, 38] and feels absolutely hollow [The Return: Midnight, 40], when she is without Damon. Elena likes it – like Damon does, too – when she is in his arms [The Return: Shadow Souls, 32], and Damon knows Elena’s personal weak spots and special likings like nobody else does [The Return: Shadow Souls, 8] (like he knows all about her better than anybody else).
Furthermore, they exchange blood completely naturally – mostly without worrying ou thinking at all –, for example to celebrate successes.
Their bodies harmonize and react to each other absolutely naturally, and as soon as Elena gives in to Damon, she surrenders completely, and nothing can be plus pleasant and thrilling (and also right) while she is restlessly in the moment when only Damon and she herself exist for her.

14 Damon and Elena are very much alike, they fit together perfectly, and them being a couple makes absolute sense. The virtuous Stefan fits much better to the docile Katherine of the Renaissance; while Elena always enjoyed danger [The Struggle, 8]. And Damon and Elena are much plus alike and therefore know and understand each other like nobody else even partly could, they are made for each other; and they can speak about everything, while Elena hides things from all of the others. They each have a strong dark trait in them and both of them have a strong personality; they are both used to get their own way and they are headstrong, stubborn and proud and can manipulate others for their own purposes. Damon knows how to charm and deceive especially women and girls (he only can’t influence Elena without problems [The Return: Midnight, 38]), and Elena can manipulate, control, dominate and use especially every male being (except for Damon [The Return: Nightfall, 23 + 26]).
As Stefan stared at him, trying to control his breathing, Damon added, almost gently, "You're wrong about her, toi know. toi think she's sweet and docile, like Katherine. She isn't. She's not your type at all, my saintly brother. She has a spirit and a feu in her that toi wouldn't know what to do with." – "And toi would, I suppose." Damon uncrossed his arms and slowly smiled again. "Oh, yes." [The Awakening, 15] and "My brother", he went on, "is a fool. He thinks that because toi look like Katherine you're weak and easily led like her. But he's wrong. […] toi have strength, Elena, even as toi are. But toi could be so much stronger ..." 15 Damon and Elena can merge perfectly into each other. Especially when they Kiss ou exchange blood – but also already when they are only close together –, their auras, minds and souls etc. melt into one. That happens immediately, very deeply and without effort, several times even without them intending to connect in that way again. Damon and Elena (and their auras, minds and souls) join, merge, melt, rush, plunge together, they become one, unite, share everything, become part of the other, there is a deep communion etc. in those moments. This restless melting into each other happens totally naturally, they are made to do that together and forget everything and everybody else during it.
This merging into one is so deep and intensive that they often have problems to disentangle and to get back to reality completely. Their thoughts and feelings are still tangled, and Damon and Elena need time to fully come back to the situation.
So, Elena has usually difficulties to form coherent sentences [The Return: Shadow Souls, 18] ou ask questions properly [The Return: Shadow Souls, 28] after being restlessly one with Damon.
"You take some of my blood." […] Damon cut himself with the minimum of fuss, and then it began to happen – they were sharing minds, melting seamlessly together. [The Return: Nightfall, 34]
When two auras mingled as deeply as this, two souls were laid bare to each other. […] She had come through the breathless delight and dizzying sweetness of joining her soul to another's. (Damon and Elena kissing) [The Return: Shadow Souls, 3]
It might have felt as if they had plunged themselves into their partner's personalities too far, that they were losing definition and becoming an ethereal part of each other before one Kiss had even been completed. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 9]
Elena truly didn't know whose thoughts these last were. She and Damon were still trying to untangle their emotions. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 18]

16 Everything in the livres depends on Damon and Elena. The other relations are influenced par how the relationship between Damon and Elena is at the time. When they are together in a big group – no matter who is there with them –, most of what takes place and is discussed is about Damon and Elena and how things are between them at that moment (what is also often a topic when only one of them ou neither of them is around). Of course, these two are used to lead and their strong personalities make sure that they are usually in the center of attention, but also most of their thoughts and feelings are focused on each other. Whenever Damon and Elena are together, they react (physically and emotionally) to each other, and each scene which is described from Damon’s point of view deals with Elena. But also Elena sends Bonnie and Stefan away, because she hopes that Damon comes to her when she sleeps alone in her room, and allows Damon to put Stefan and Bonnie to sleep so that she can Kiss Damon. [The Return: Midnight, 28].
Because even with her official boyfriend and her Friends Elena always yearns for Damon and puts off the others for him.
She could not imagine a universe, no matter how many dimensions there were, without a Damon in it. There was no world for her, if there was no Damon. [The Return: Midnight, 38]
No physical pain could compare with what was in her heart, with the pain of losing what she had lost. No physical pain could express how she felt. (Elena after Damon’s death) [The Return: Midnight, 39]
[…] and nothing was real again, and there was no one else in the world for her, and she didn't even care if doing it this way meant she would follow him into death. (Elena after Damon’s death) [The Return: Midnight, 39]
She knew that he hadn't shut his eyes yet; that he was still fighting the torture. For her. Not for anything else. For her sake only. [The Return: Midnight, 39]
[…] and Elena had the feeling that now hope was gone. Everything was gone. She was hollow: a girl who looked solid, but whose insides were missing. (Elena after Damon’s death) [The Return: Midnight, 40]
17 The l’amour between Damon and Elena has to overcome many obstacles and still does successfully overcome everything. Elena and Stefan have the same problems all of the time, there is no development at all, and they have only very few difficulties. But Damon’s and Elena’s love, that wasn’t even intended, has to be stronger to reach the same level, because it has to deal with so many obstacles and because Damon and Elena don’t even fight these obstacles intentionally. Their l’amour must be very powerful to get to the extent that it reaches.
So, Damon and Elena are very much alike and they both have really strong personalities, so that they have to deal with their own and the other’s pride and stubbornness at the same time. They also have a bad conscience and have to face Elena’s Friends who are against their relationship. And during all of those problems, Damon and Elena go through different phases which make their l’amour even plus difficult. Damon is obsessed, a human and dead while Elena is a vampire, dead and a spirit-child and is confused most of the time par her uncontrolable Wing Powers. Several of Damon’s memories are taken – and mostly very affectionate Damon-and-Elena-moments –, and Elena has to deal with her memories and feelings about those moments alone.
Furthermore, Damon presents himself at the start really evil and Elena is a very spoiled highschool-queen. But they both don’t want to give in to their dark sides so that they have to find a way to be together without conquering and destroying the world, while they likewise have to realize that behind their enormous physical attraction to each other there are true and deep feelings for the other. Damon also regards s’embrasser etc. as human weaknesses and wants to do nothing human if possible, and he thinks Elena young and innocent and doesn’t want to take advantage of her. And Elena usually only thinks that Stefan has to be something that turns out to be Damon instead, and she often thinks panicly, that her l’amour to and her desire for Damon can’t be ou shouldn’t be, when she has to face her deep feelings and strong yearning for Damon – and those come up really very often.
Their l’amour has to fight with all of these things and still becomes stronger and deeper throughout the books, and toi have to ask yourself how intensive their relationship would be without Damon and Elena having to overcome so many obstacles; because there was no opportunity for them so far to give in to their l’amour totally and without restrictions, and as soon as Damon and Elena will finally be together officially, the inner conflict and being torn apart would stop immediately, because Elena will finally have everything that she always wanted, that she always yearned for.
18 Whenever he is with Elena – and even if he isn’t – there is only Elena for Damon, no matter who else is around. So, the sight of Lady Bloddeuwedd has no effect on him – unlike on all of the others (no matter if they are mortal ou immortal) –, after he just danced affectionately with Elena [The Return: Shadow Souls, 34].
As long as Elena is with him, he takes no notice of Bonnie, except that he wants to protect Elena’s Friends for Elena (and he is still mostly interested in Elena’s safety and for example demands from Meredith only to protect Elena – he doesn’t even mention Meredith’s own and Bonnie’s protection [The Return: Shadow Souls, 18]). Each of the Damon-and-Bonnie-moments take place when Elena isn’t with them (mostly while she is dead ou in another dimension) – and even while Elena is dead, only Stefan’s undead existence means something to Damon [Dark Reunion, 15] –, and those moments montrer something like a father-and-daughter-relation; so, Bonnie is Damon’s little bird which he has to protect, and Bonnie admires Damon but she is partial to all boys – also to Alaric, Matt, Sage, Stefan and others. She says herself that she doesn’t want to decide on one guy while she is still that young, that she likes to go from boy to boy, that she gets crushed and over them again plus than easily and that she hasn’t found a guy so far that she would want to be faithful to [Dark Reunion, 2]. Also Bonnie knows that she can never be like Elena for Damon and that Damon treats them differently and that he for example never would have left Elena alone in the Dark Dimension like he did leave Bonnie. There is nothing else from Damon’s side than the protection of somebody weak and the gratefulness that Bonnie doesn’t condemn him right away, what he usually is used to.
Damon is also thankful that Katherine as a kind and sweet girl likes him, and he enjoys upsetting Stefan par also going after Katherine. But although he surely feels plus guilty about her death than he is willing to show, nothing serious is ever described between Damon and her, like Katherine’s and Stefan’s l’amour is dealt with several times.
Princess Jessalyn reminds Damon of Bonnie, but he has to think of Elena to montrer real desire and real passion to the princess [The Return: Midnight, 10]; and Damon thinks Bonnie’s breasts too small [The Return: Nightfall, 11]. There is never any passion between Damon and Bonnie at all, nothing even close to the affectionate and passionate "interactions" between Damon and Elena ou to the deep emotions like Damon’s l’amour and longing for Elena happen ou are described. Bonnie is much too sensible for the strong and dark Damon, and Damon says that he only loved Elena in all of his life and undead existence [The Return: Midnight, 38], and Elena is unconditionally sure of Damon’s l’amour for her even as Stefan mentions Damon’s kindness to weak people (like Bonnie) [The Return: Midnight, 43].
19 There are also some incidents about which not all was revealed so far.
There is for example the ritual with which Elena summons her future husband [The Awakening, 11]. Katherine says later that she followed Damon to Bonnie’s house that evening as he went there as a crow. But nothing else is a dit about that evening, so that toi can’t know what was reality and what was vision. It is never again mentioned anything about what happened during that incident, although Damon and Elena speak about all of their other encounters again and again ou at least Elena herself remembers Damon’s and her adventures several times. But no matter what was real that evening, there has to be a reason that Damon showed up as Elena summoned her husband-to-be, because the invitation was for her future husband, Elena carries out the ritual correctly and Bonnie’s ancestors swear for generations to the effectiveness of this method and to the correctness of its result.
Another example is the famous motel-night during the trip to the Dark Dimension [The Return: Shadow Souls, 7-10] and its effects. plus happened without doubt than was revealed so far. Elena only gave away until now that she held Damon in her arms all night long. But there was at least discussed more, because Elena speaks later about Damon’s feelings for Stefan and mentions Signora Salvatore in relation to that night. Damon and Elena kissed and exchanged blood many other times, and Elena doesn’t count the beginning of that night to the phase in the crucial time limits, so that toi wonder why she feels even plus guilty about that one night than she usually does, why she only tells Damon about having held him all night as he dies, and nobody else at all, and why something makes Bonnie talk about the motel-night in trance, so that Elena’s Friends know about it. The events of that night are therefore important enough to let Elena’s Friends know about it, and Elena, who speaks about this evening and night in particular, is surprised that Damon doesn’t remember especially these. The memories of that motel-night lateron cause Elena several times to rather give in to and get closer to Damon, and Elena is afraid to face Stefan after that night with Damon; she experiences fierce emotions when she thinks about that night and tries badly to hide her feelings about it from her Friends – so, toi have to ask what is responsible for such extreme reactions.
20 Everything that has something to do with Damon and Elena is dealt with most in all of the livres par far. These two pay attention to each other’s looks again and again – and how it affects them –, and their feelings for each other and the reactions of their bodies to each other are always described in detail. The development of Damon and Elena and everything that is related to them is the main emphasis of the story. Especially their relationship and its development are described most intensely; no other relationship has to go through a real development. The auteur likes écriture about Damon and Elena best, and the readers can sympathize most easily with them, and most of the time the livres deal with one of them ou mostly with them both and their mutual feelings.
These are only a few of the reasons why the "Vampire Diaries"–books lead to Damon and Elena as a couple in the end. Many examples, of which lots of others would also be fitting, can be also used for several other points. And here are plus examples to prove the predetermination of Damon and Elena being together in the end:
She remembered him. He was the one who understood her, who loved her. He was the one she wanted to be with forever. […] For him she would get up and walk through this ridiculous sleet until she found the proper clearing. Until she could rejoindre him. Then they'd be together. The very thought of him seemed to warm her. There was a feu inside him that few people could see. She saw it, though. It was like the feu inside her. [The Struggle, 16]
But then she remembered something else, just a flash: looking up at Damon's face in the woods and feeling such – such excitement, such affinity with him. As if he understood the flame that burned inside her as nobody else ever could. As if together they could do anything they liked, conquer the world ou destroy it; as if they were better than anyone else who had ever lived. [The Fury, 5]
Damon was feeling something he hadn't felt for five hundred years. He was feeling desire. Human desire. vampires didn't feel that. It was all sublimated into the need for the blood, always the blood ... But he was feeling it. [The Return: Nightfall, 31]
"All I could think of was you. All I wanted was you." (Damon to Elena) [The Return: Nightfall, 33]
Without a thought of herself, without a thought of any kind, Elena did what she did best – gave in to impulse. She threw her arms around Damon's neck and kissed him. [The Return: Nightfall, 33]
He had not even thought about a girl in this way for approximately five hundred years. vampires weren't capable of it. But Damon was – very capable – now. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 7]
And he didn't know how long he could mask the feu with ice. At any moment, he felt that he might break down, snatch her into his arms and rain kisses on her. ou stroke her cheek gently as he slowly bent to taste her lips. ou even possibly fronde her over his shoulder and take her to the quietest, dimmest part of the hayloft. He wanted her blood. But that wasn't all he wanted. He didn't want an unwilling ou influenced partner. He wanted the golden glow of Elena's l’amour to shine for him. He wanted to look down and see that special look in Elena's eyes. […] He wanted her to want him. [Damon and Elena: Tumbleweeds]
Elena felt herself begin to swoon with the intensity of the passion they had wrought between them. As a final gesture, not of repudiation, but of invitation, she arched her head back, exposing to him her bare throat, and let him feel her longing. And as if great, crystal bells were ringing in the distance, she felt his jubilation at her voluntary surrender to the velvet darkness that was overtaking her. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 9]
[…] and her quick Kiss became a longer kiss. […] and then Damon stroked her hair and time meant nothing until Meredith knocked at the door. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 20]
Thinking about what Bonnie had a dit when she was asleep, Elena reached out for comfort and understanding, and somehow found that instead of holding Damon's hand, she was in Damon's arms. […] "Whatever happened, I promise I'll still be around for you", Damon a dit softly. "You've got my word on that, anyway." Elena could feel his breath against her hair. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 26]
[…] Yes, yes, but I haven't fed properly today. Elena started, then clasped Damon closer. […] "It's ... all right", she whispered, amazed that Damon was able to stand and hold her at all, with his insides tearing at him that way. "Whatever ... toi need ... take ..." And then she felt the most gentle probing at her throat of razor-sharp teeth. She gave herself up to it, surrendering to the sensations. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 26]
[…] no, I don't want to bite toi – I only want to Kiss you, just a little, like this. There was revelation in Damon's mind-voice. And he did Kiss so sweetly, and he always knew when Elena's knees were going to give out and picked her up before she could fall on the floor. Damon, Damon, she was thinking, feeling very sweet herself because she knew she was giving him pleasure. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 32]
The waltz was over all too soon and Elena wanted to push the Replay button and do it from the beginning again. There was a moment just when the musique stopped where she and Damon were looking at each other, with equal exaltation and yearning and ... […] Elena laughed because she wanted to cry. She never wanted to stop dancing. She wanted to tango with Damon – a real tango, the kind toi were supposed to have to get married after. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 34]
And every time I look into Stefan's eyes – those jewel-green eyes that are warm with trust and gratitude – I feel terror, too. […] terror that he'll find out how I've come to feel about Damon. I hadn't even realized myself how much Damon has come to mean to me. And I can't ... stop ... my feeling ... for him, even if he hates me now. […] Oh, please, God, please don't let him hate me! (Elena’s diary entry) [The Return: Midnight, 1]
He knew what it meant when her gaze went first to his lips before lifting to his eyes. […] She was surrendering all thought of herself, montrer him that despite everything she still trusted him, still ... still loved him. [The Return: Midnight, 2]
She's in l’amour with you, the tiny part of him that could still think said. She's never a dit so! […] She doesn't have to say it. She's montrer it. Don't pretend toi haven't seen it before! [The Return: Midnight, 2]
The truth was that she was still very shaken par her actions – her reactions – toward Damon. […] And ... and ... for taking poor Bonnie – and not taking her! […] And Stefan – what else could he think but that she was a woman scorned, the kind that Hell had no fury like? How could he be so kind, so caring, when anyone in their right mind would know she'd gone mad with jealousy? [The Return: Midnight, 28]
"The excitement ... I'm going to sleep in my room alone. I want to get a good night's rest. We're going on a quest, toi know?" All the truth. All a lie. […] and though she slept alone in her room, Damon didn't visit to quarrel with her, mock her, ou kill her – and certainly not to kiss. [The Return: Midnight, 28]
"But even when toi fought, toi felt the call of my cœur, coeur to yours. Try to deny that." […] and something in Elena kept whispering to her that of course she had heard his call from the moment she first saw him, first felt his aura call to her. [The Return: Midnight, 28]
With a scream that peeled raw and bleeding from her backbone and came hoarsely out of her throat, Elena grabbed a branch of the arbre that had killed Damon, that had murdered her beloved. […] But instinctively she held a high bough of the Tree's cage and let the fury explode out of her, the fury of murdered love. [The Return: Midnight, 39]
"I will never forget him. And I will never let anyone else who knew him forget him - for as long as I live." (Elena about Damon) [The Return: Midnight, 43]

When he saw her, pale golden hair gleaming about her shoulders, blue eyes Lost in shadow, he was struck silent with amazement. And with love. He had never seen anything plus beautiful in his life. […] And this was Katherine, Katherine whose beauty seemed to come from heaven, Katherine whom he loved plus than his own soul. […] He couldn't help himself; he put his arms around her, holding her to him. […] He wanted this, wanted anything that would let him be with Katherine. […] My love. The words sang through him. […] It was a feeling of giving, of nurturing. Then it was as if their minds were merging, becoming one. He could feel Katherine's joy in drinking from him. And he knew she could feel his delight in giving. [The Awakening, 11]
Haltingly, he told her about Katherine. About Katherine's beauty and sweetness, and about his l’amour for her. […] And he had been so happy, so full of awe and joy. […] Her blood burned in his veins now, he thought, and the very words made his cœur, coeur race. […] "I will never share toi with him." (Stefan to Katherine regarding Damon) [The Awakening, 13]
"I know", she added, even plus softly, "how much toi loved Katherine." (Elena to Stefan) [The Awakening, 14]
"When Katherine died", he said, "I thought I could never l’amour anyone else. Even though I knew she would have wanted me to, I was sure it could never happen. […] I kept the ring because it was a symbol of her. So I could keep her in my heart." [The Struggle, 13]

There are many other points to mention and many other emotions that Elena has for Damon and what he also is for her; and there are especially many plus examples to prove the donné reasons – but that would be too long here. Damon and Elena are the Prince and the Princess of Darkness and souls’ eternal mates; she is for him the jewel on the dungheap of humanity and he is her lovely panther. They had to realize that they can be together without ruling the world and that under their extreme physical attraction there are true and really deep feelings for each other; they had to overcome very much, but their mutual l’amour became always stronger and deeper. Because Damon and Elena both came back from death, there has to be some way to also get Katherine back – like the docile girl of the Renaissance that she was before she Lost her mind –, so that Stefan can be happy with her; because that is the only couple arrangement which makes sense. But the "Vampire Diaries"–books are mainly (frequency, intensity, depth, …) about Damon and Elena, so that the story can only be seen as a slow uniting of these two and – with all respect – the livres can’t be understood in a different way. All of the characters in the story come to this conclusion sooner ou later, because Elena’s cœur, coeur insists against her mind on Damon to whom she has all aspects of emotions, attraction, connection etc. and who is everything for her, and nothing manages to change that, because it isn’t possible for Damon and Elena to exist without the other and without their l’amour for each other. Damon and Elena belong together, fit together perfectly, were always meant for each other, harmonize perfectly, and everything leads to an end with Damon and Elena as a couple.
1 The development of their feelings for each other and of their relationship would make no sense otherwise; everything could have stayed like it was at the beginning. But the relationship of Damon and Elena develops further and further instead of sticking to how it was at the start between them. Their l’amour for each other becomes stronger and stronger, and this intensification of the feelings that they have for each other still doesn’t seem to stop any time soon.
2 Elena feels already from the start a deep longing and has the feeling that she belongs somewhere else. (But right now everything looks strange to me, as if I don't belong here. It's me that's out of place. And the worst thing is that I feel there's somewhere I do belong, but I just can't find it. (Elena’s diary entry) [The Awakening, 1]) Even when she has a relationship with Stefan, she still feels that deep yearning, and also Damon, who knows her like nobody else and understands her better than anybody else can, sees that desire in her. ("You've tried everything else, and nothing has satisfied you. You're the girl who has everything, but there's always been something just out of your reach, something toi need desperately and can't have. That's what I'm offering you. […] You'll be happy as never before." [The Struggle, 1]) Only when Elena kisses Damon while not fighting the passion between them and their feelings for each other for the first time, she finally finds what she always wanted. (She realized that the way to calm this maelstrom was to become part of it, neither giving in nor forcing Damon to, but par meeting the passion in the undertow with what was inside her own heart. As soon as she did, the undertow became wind, and she was flying and not drowning. No, it was better than flying, better than dancing, it was what her cœur, coeur always yearned for. [The Return: Midnight, 28])
3 Damon realizes from the beginning that he and Elena belong together and fit together perfectly; and Damon knows human nature extremely well, understands Elena better than she herself does and – even if he sometimes avoids answering a question – never lies. Elena also feels that she belongs to Damon, but she fights it for a long time. And even Elena’s Friends notice that there is plus between her and Damon than they realized at first, and also Stefan sees the deep l’amour between Damon and Elena in the end; and neither her Friends nor Stefan like that conclusion, but they have to admit it anyway.
Damon: "I'm going to have toi in the end, toi know", he a dit softly. […] There was no mockery ou malice now; he was simply stating a fact. [The Struggle, 11]
He wanted her to believe him, to trust him. He didn't want Elena as a one-night bleeder. He wanted her to choose him. He wanted her to see how much better suited she was to him than to his mousy, milksop brother. His princess of darkness. That was what she was meant to be. With him as king, consort, whatever she wished. When she saw things plus clearly, she would understand that it didn't matter. That nothing mattered except them being together. [The Return: Nightfall, 29]
"Past history aside, toi have to admit that we're the ones that belong together. toi and I are simply better suited to each other par nature. Deep down toi know that, because we understand each other. […] Don't toi feel that toi could be my princess of darkness - that something deep inside toi wants to? I can see it, if toi can't. […] And you'll know that we're plus suited together. […] toi were meant to be mine, toi know." [The Return: Nightfall, 33]
Elena’s friends: Matt leaves Damon and Elena when they travel to the Dark Dimension, because he can’t ours to see them together any longer. Meredith and Bonnie, who follow Damon and Elena after hearing Matt’s report, watch Elena and Damon closely, mention their observations about those two to Elena several times, try to stop Damon and Elena – whenever possible – from getting even closer, but have to finally admit that Elena also wants Damon. Many of those moments can be found during the trip to and the time in the Dark Dimension – especially from the "tangle"-scene to the conversation between Meredith and Bonnie in the litter [The Return: Shadow Souls] – but there are also several other moments like those before and after that.
Stefan: "Damon is gone, Elena. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry if ... if I kept toi from being with him as much as toi wanted to. I'm sorry if I came between you. I didn't understand - how much toi loved each other. I do now." [The Return: Midnight, 41]
"I can't – It isn't – It's not me toi want." (Stefan to Elena) [The Return: Midnight, 43]
4 Elena thinks about Damon when she is with Stefan; she worries, feels guilty, remembers their adventures and things like that. When Elena is with Damon, she very often forgets Stefan, everything else and everybody else and is restlessly in the moment while there is nobody and nothing else than Damon for her.
5 Another point is how everybody behaves after someone’s death. Stefan can’t even say Katherine’s name after her death, what is no problem for Damon at all, while Damon can’t speak about Elena after her death, what Stefan – with grief – still can. Damon feeds after Elena’s death from girls who look like her, sees no sense left in his existence and longs to be caught so that he doesn’t influence the girls that nourish him. Elena destroys a moon with her Wings of Destruction after Damon’s death and can barely be stopped from destroying another world. She can’t ours an existence without Damon and almost loses her mind.
6 Whenever Elena gives in to her feelings without thinking, whenever she is confused ou whenever she puts her cœur, coeur above her mind, there is always only Damon for her – for example when she wakes up as a vampire [end of The Struggle/ beginning of The Fury] ou when she dreams (dance-dream [The Struggle, 8] and being-held-dream [The Return: Shadow Souls, 8]). It is the same when Elena reacts without thinking ou gives in to impulses ou instincts, and she says things many times without intending to say them which give away what she really feels inside. She usually gives in to Damon at first before stopping herself – if she even stops. Elena only tells herself that there is nothing, but her spontanious reactions, which happen because of her true feelings, give away what can be found inside of her. There is also the freudian slip "I'm here to collect my beloved Damon and Stefan is just helping me." [The Return: Shadow Souls, 30], and Elena calls Damon – (the first time) unintendedly – "darling" [The Return: Midnight, 2] and realizes par that herself that she is seriously in l’amour with him. And so, what is inside her leads for her to Damon: […] and her skyrocketing cœur, coeur brought a name to her lips. „Da…!“ [The Return: Midnight, 42].
7 She may also l’amour Stefan – chastely –, but Elena has really everything with Damon. She loves him and is deeply in l’amour with him; they have a strong attraction between them, and there is electricity (electrical impulses, currents and shocks, sparks, shockwaves …) between their bodies. Their bodies respond fiercely to each other, and Elena feels passion, ardor, excitement, longing, yearning and desire towards Damon. She feels welcome with him and experiences a strong sweetness and an extreme ecstasy. She is jealous when Damon has Bonnie with him, and Elena senses that Damon is her destiny (what he always knew) and that she wants to be with him forever [The Struggle, 16]. Damon and Elena have fun together, are happy when they are together, and it feels right for them to be together. Damon and Elena feel compassion for each other, forgive again and again what the other does and have a strong mutual sympathy. They protect and trust the other, understand and see through each other like nobody else can, and Elena is aware of the fact that she belongs to Damon [The Fury, 1] and that Damon belongs to her [The Return: Shadow Souls, 8].
Elena has feelings for Damon, she feels deeply for him, he means very much to her, she cares about and for him, he is in her heart, she feels restlessly drawn to him. Furthermore, Damon and Elena have a private frequency between them [The Return: Midnight, 38].
Elena calls Damon "darling" (and even continues doing so after realizing that she is madly in l’amour with him par calling him like that), "beloved" (several times) and the fiery breath beneath her wings [The Return: Nightfall, 37]. She knows that she has been born to be with him [The Fury, 1] and calls him her magic, her solace, her best beloved and her soul’s eternal mate [The Return: Shadow Souls, 8].
Elena can’t ours an existence without Damon, can’t even imagine a world without him with her, and something inside of her whispers to Damon "I'm yours ..." [The Return: Shadow Souls, 17].

With him as king, consort, whatever she wished. When she saw things plus clearly, she would understand that it didn't matter. That nothing mattered except them being together. In each one of them was a tiny sparkle of admiration that Damon had for her: pearls for her courage, for her intelligence, for her beauty. It seemed that there was no slightest motion she had made, no briefest word that she had said, that he had not noticed and locked in his cœur, coeur as a treasure. [The Return: Midnight, 28]
But I have to tell toi ... what I know toi already know ... How I fell in l’amour with toi ... […] Just that ... I loved once – just once, really, in my whole life. Can toi remember that I loved you? (Damon to Elena) [The Return: Midnight, 38])
And even Stefan – for whom some of these points are also true, but par far not all – has to admit in the end how much Damon and Elena l’amour each other [The Return: Midnight, 41]. That l’amour is already plus than obvious, even long before Damon and Elena confess it.
8 Further to mention is how the first encounters and the starts of the different relationships take place. When Stefan comes to Fell’s Church, he feels guilty because of Katherine’s death and is still devoted to her. Elena looks a lot like Katherine, and Stefan needs a while to notice the differences. Elena, the Queen of the highschool, is selfish and self-centered and claims all good-looking boys for herself. She reigns in the highschool and chooses the handsome Stefan as her suivant "victim". She does that only out of habit and it is a matter of her reputation at the school and about her pride. Elena feels humiliated, because Stefan keeps his distance to her; when her rival Caroline starts going out with Stefan first, Elena becomes extremly jealous – but only because of her status in school. As soon as Elena and Stefan become a couple anyway, they just decide that they only want to l’amour each other forever, for what there is no development at all and for what no reason can be seen; and it already doesn’t work out because of Elena’s feelings for Damon.
When Damon and Elena meet for the first time – in human form – [The Awakening, 10], she almost instantly gives in to him and is very close to s’embrasser him (without even knowing who he is), what she mentions herself later several times. When she begins bathing with vervain – what lessens Damon’s influence on her (although he can’t influence her like others even without vervain) –, Elena notices how much attraction there is between them which has nothing to do with Damon’s Supernatural powers. Elena has feelings for Damon right from the beginning although she fights them, and she feels drawn to him enormously, even when he is only evil for her – and these mutual feelings are always there throughout the livres and become even deeper and deeper with time.
9 A predetermination of Damon and Elena being together in the end can be seen. Damon knows that right away, and Elena and Damon as a couple make sense. They fit together plus than perfectly, are very much alike, and it just feels right when they are together; they are the Prince and the Princess of Darkness. Damon is the only (male) being that Elena can’t manipulate (Of all of the guys she'd known, Damon had been the only one Elena couldn't break. […] and eventually even the most challenging male could be mastered. Except one ... […] "But in any case, it's true, what toi were thinking earlier. […] I'm the only one, Elena. The only one toi haven't conquered. The only one toi can't manipulate. Intriguing, isn't it?" [The Return: Nightfall, 23 + 26]), while Elena is the only (female) human that Damon can’t influence without difficulties (Yes ... and toi ... toi astonished me par being the first girl I couldn't Influence right away. [The Return: Midnight, 38]). Damon and Elena are really made for each other, them being together is predetermined par destiny.
"I'm going to have toi in the end, toi know", he a dit softly. […] There was no mockery ou malice now; he was simply stating a fact. [The Struggle, 11]
She had come to help him because she belonged to him. […] And this one had to die. […] Because he'd hurt him, the other one, the one Elena had been born to be with. [The Fury, 1]

10 Damon and Elena don’t stop kissing, exchanging blood, melting into one while mingling their auras, sharing their minds and merging their souls together, lying in each other’s arms, caressing each other etc., although they feel extremly guilty about it. Their bad conscience doesn’t prevent their relationship from developing further and deeper all the time. Although they also have feelings for others and fight their love, their attraction and their yearning for each other, they continue none the less. Elena’s official relationship with Stefan doesn’t hinder Damon and Elena from going on with their own relationship. Just imagine how intensive an official relationship between Damon and Elena would be without anything hampering them, when they finally won’t have to fear feeling guilty and having a bad conscience anymore.
11 Although they fight their feelings for each other and try not to get closer and closer, Damon and Elena really can’t quit anything. Their relationship developes constantly, and they just can’t stop, although they desperately try to. The reactions of their bodies to each other are already enough to make a relationship between the two of them without any emotion absolutely impossible (although there are plus reasons which exclude such an emotionless way for them).
Elena is branded on Damon’s soul [The Return: Midnight, 2] and therefore always present for him, and Elena, who for a very long time doesn’t admit to herself that she really can’t be without Damon, becomes totally jealous as Bonnie – although par accident – gets into the Dark Dimension with Damon – instead of Elena herself [The Return: Midnight, 28]. Elena sends Bonnie and Stefan out of her room for the night because she hopes that Damon comes to her [The Return: Midnight, 28], and she allows Damon to put Stefan and Bonnie to sleep so that Elena can Kiss Damon [The Return: Midnight, 28]. Even when she fights her true feelings, Elena feels the calling between her cœur, coeur and Damon’s cœur, coeur from the start [The Return: Midnight, 28], and there is something inside her (a feeling for Damon) that is always present for her and that influences her relationship with Stefan [The Return: Midnight, 5].

12 Damon’s and Elena’s bodies react extremely to each other from the beginning and can’t be stopped from doing so. Some of those responses are reactions and impulses which are caused par their emotions and montrer their true feelings, but – no matter what kind of responses there are – no encounter between the two of them takes place without any physical and emotional reaction; extreme tension and feu can always be found between them. There is an enormous attraction between Damon and Elena; they feel electricity, sparks and shockwaves when they touch each other – and sometimes even without touching at all – ou they cause such electric impulses in the body of the other (like for example in the "tangle"-scene [The Return: Shadow Souls, 11] and the following chapters).
Elena shivers, tingles, trembles, shakes, has tremors etc. (on the inside and on the outside) and experiences sensations and overwhelming emotions because of Damon, and something in her mind whispers to Damon "I'm yours ..." [The Return: Shadow Souls, 17], and their hearts call to each other [The Return: Midnight, 28].
Elena herself ou something inside of her melts when she is with Damon (like his insides also sometimes do when they are together), and she very often exposes her throat to Damon ou her gaze goes to his lips before lifting to his eyes. When she is with Damon, Elena’s lips part and her eyes drift shut and she feels good and experiences a pleasant heavyness etc.; and each of these feelings and reactions – including the shockwaves and the electricity – are always pleasing and usually very thrilling for her.
Damon and Elena usually look into each other’s eyes for a very long time, are always aware of the presence of the other and try to – ou desperately try not to – touch. Damon and Elena are in each other’s arms all of the time – that happens totally naturally and several times even without them noticing that they melt into an embrace again until they already hold each other. Elena’s legs give out ou her knees go weak when she is in Damon’s arms, and he always knows when that happens and supports her weight, holds her plus tightly ou picks her up before she can fall down; Damon and Elena (and their bodies) often do things in unison and their bodies are connected and harmonize perfectly.

13 Everything seems to be right when Damon and Elena are together. toi get the impression that everything is like it should be with them together, and Damon and Elena feel that, too. Their relationship is meant to be and they fit together perfectly and are plus than happy together. Without the other it feels wrong for them and something is missing; so Elena experiences an unbearable pain [The Return: Midnight, 38] and feels absolutely hollow [The Return: Midnight, 40], when she is without Damon. Elena likes it – like Damon does, too – when she is in his arms [The Return: Shadow Souls, 32], and Damon knows Elena’s personal weak spots and special likings like nobody else does [The Return: Shadow Souls, 8] (like he knows all about her better than anybody else).
Furthermore, they exchange blood completely naturally – mostly without worrying ou thinking at all –, for example to celebrate successes.
Their bodies harmonize and react to each other absolutely naturally, and as soon as Elena gives in to Damon, she surrenders completely, and nothing can be plus pleasant and thrilling (and also right) while she is restlessly in the moment when only Damon and she herself exist for her.

14 Damon and Elena are very much alike, they fit together perfectly, and them being a couple makes absolute sense. The virtuous Stefan fits much better to the docile Katherine of the Renaissance; while Elena always enjoyed danger [The Struggle, 8]. And Damon and Elena are much plus alike and therefore know and understand each other like nobody else even partly could, they are made for each other; and they can speak about everything, while Elena hides things from all of the others. They each have a strong dark trait in them and both of them have a strong personality; they are both used to get their own way and they are headstrong, stubborn and proud and can manipulate others for their own purposes. Damon knows how to charm and deceive especially women and girls (he only can’t influence Elena without problems [The Return: Midnight, 38]), and Elena can manipulate, control, dominate and use especially every male being (except for Damon [The Return: Nightfall, 23 + 26]).
As Stefan stared at him, trying to control his breathing, Damon added, almost gently, "You're wrong about her, toi know. toi think she's sweet and docile, like Katherine. She isn't. She's not your type at all, my saintly brother. She has a spirit and a feu in her that toi wouldn't know what to do with." – "And toi would, I suppose." Damon uncrossed his arms and slowly smiled again. "Oh, yes." [The Awakening, 15] and "My brother", he went on, "is a fool. He thinks that because toi look like Katherine you're weak and easily led like her. But he's wrong. […] toi have strength, Elena, even as toi are. But toi could be so much stronger ..." 15 Damon and Elena can merge perfectly into each other. Especially when they Kiss ou exchange blood – but also already when they are only close together –, their auras, minds and souls etc. melt into one. That happens immediately, very deeply and without effort, several times even without them intending to connect in that way again. Damon and Elena (and their auras, minds and souls) join, merge, melt, rush, plunge together, they become one, unite, share everything, become part of the other, there is a deep communion etc. in those moments. This restless melting into each other happens totally naturally, they are made to do that together and forget everything and everybody else during it.
This merging into one is so deep and intensive that they often have problems to disentangle and to get back to reality completely. Their thoughts and feelings are still tangled, and Damon and Elena need time to fully come back to the situation.
So, Elena has usually difficulties to form coherent sentences [The Return: Shadow Souls, 18] ou ask questions properly [The Return: Shadow Souls, 28] after being restlessly one with Damon.

16 Everything in the livres depends on Damon and Elena. The other relations are influenced par how the relationship between Damon and Elena is at the time. When they are together in a big group – no matter who is there with them –, most of what takes place and is discussed is about Damon and Elena and how things are between them at that moment (what is also often a topic when only one of them ou neither of them is around). Of course, these two are used to lead and their strong personalities make sure that they are usually in the center of attention, but also most of their thoughts and feelings are focused on each other. Whenever Damon and Elena are together, they react (physically and emotionally) to each other, and each scene which is described from Damon’s point of view deals with Elena. But also Elena sends Bonnie and Stefan away, because she hopes that Damon comes to her when she sleeps alone in her room, and allows Damon to put Stefan and Bonnie to sleep so that she can Kiss Damon. [The Return: Midnight, 28].
Because even with her official boyfriend and her Friends Elena always yearns for Damon and puts off the others for him.

17 The l’amour between Damon and Elena has to overcome many obstacles and still does successfully overcome everything. Elena and Stefan have the same problems all of the time, there is no development at all, and they have only very few difficulties. But Damon’s and Elena’s love, that wasn’t even intended, has to be stronger to reach the same level, because it has to deal with so many obstacles and because Damon and Elena don’t even fight these obstacles intentionally. Their l’amour must be very powerful to get to the extent that it reaches.
So, Damon and Elena are very much alike and they both have really strong personalities, so that they have to deal with their own and the other’s pride and stubbornness at the same time. They also have a bad conscience and have to face Elena’s Friends who are against their relationship. And during all of those problems, Damon and Elena go through different phases which make their l’amour even plus difficult. Damon is obsessed, a human and dead while Elena is a vampire, dead and a spirit-child and is confused most of the time par her uncontrolable Wing Powers. Several of Damon’s memories are taken – and mostly very affectionate Damon-and-Elena-moments –, and Elena has to deal with her memories and feelings about those moments alone.
Furthermore, Damon presents himself at the start really evil and Elena is a very spoiled highschool-queen. But they both don’t want to give in to their dark sides so that they have to find a way to be together without conquering and destroying the world, while they likewise have to realize that behind their enormous physical attraction to each other there are true and deep feelings for the other. Damon also regards s’embrasser etc. as human weaknesses and wants to do nothing human if possible, and he thinks Elena young and innocent and doesn’t want to take advantage of her. And Elena usually only thinks that Stefan has to be something that turns out to be Damon instead, and she often thinks panicly, that her l’amour to and her desire for Damon can’t be ou shouldn’t be, when she has to face her deep feelings and strong yearning for Damon – and those come up really very often.
Their l’amour has to fight with all of these things and still becomes stronger and deeper throughout the books, and toi have to ask yourself how intensive their relationship would be without Damon and Elena having to overcome so many obstacles; because there was no opportunity for them so far to give in to their l’amour totally and without restrictions, and as soon as Damon and Elena will finally be together officially, the inner conflict and being torn apart would stop immediately, because Elena will finally have everything that she always wanted, that she always yearned for.
18 Whenever he is with Elena – and even if he isn’t – there is only Elena for Damon, no matter who else is around. So, the sight of Lady Bloddeuwedd has no effect on him – unlike on all of the others (no matter if they are mortal ou immortal) –, after he just danced affectionately with Elena [The Return: Shadow Souls, 34].
As long as Elena is with him, he takes no notice of Bonnie, except that he wants to protect Elena’s Friends for Elena (and he is still mostly interested in Elena’s safety and for example demands from Meredith only to protect Elena – he doesn’t even mention Meredith’s own and Bonnie’s protection [The Return: Shadow Souls, 18]). Each of the Damon-and-Bonnie-moments take place when Elena isn’t with them (mostly while she is dead ou in another dimension) – and even while Elena is dead, only Stefan’s undead existence means something to Damon [Dark Reunion, 15] –, and those moments montrer something like a father-and-daughter-relation; so, Bonnie is Damon’s little bird which he has to protect, and Bonnie admires Damon but she is partial to all boys – also to Alaric, Matt, Sage, Stefan and others. She says herself that she doesn’t want to decide on one guy while she is still that young, that she likes to go from boy to boy, that she gets crushed and over them again plus than easily and that she hasn’t found a guy so far that she would want to be faithful to [Dark Reunion, 2]. Also Bonnie knows that she can never be like Elena for Damon and that Damon treats them differently and that he for example never would have left Elena alone in the Dark Dimension like he did leave Bonnie. There is nothing else from Damon’s side than the protection of somebody weak and the gratefulness that Bonnie doesn’t condemn him right away, what he usually is used to.
Damon is also thankful that Katherine as a kind and sweet girl likes him, and he enjoys upsetting Stefan par also going after Katherine. But although he surely feels plus guilty about her death than he is willing to show, nothing serious is ever described between Damon and her, like Katherine’s and Stefan’s l’amour is dealt with several times.
Princess Jessalyn reminds Damon of Bonnie, but he has to think of Elena to montrer real desire and real passion to the princess [The Return: Midnight, 10]; and Damon thinks Bonnie’s breasts too small [The Return: Nightfall, 11]. There is never any passion between Damon and Bonnie at all, nothing even close to the affectionate and passionate "interactions" between Damon and Elena ou to the deep emotions like Damon’s l’amour and longing for Elena happen ou are described. Bonnie is much too sensible for the strong and dark Damon, and Damon says that he only loved Elena in all of his life and undead existence [The Return: Midnight, 38], and Elena is unconditionally sure of Damon’s l’amour for her even as Stefan mentions Damon’s kindness to weak people (like Bonnie) [The Return: Midnight, 43].
19 There are also some incidents about which not all was revealed so far.
There is for example the ritual with which Elena summons her future husband [The Awakening, 11]. Katherine says later that she followed Damon to Bonnie’s house that evening as he went there as a crow. But nothing else is a dit about that evening, so that toi can’t know what was reality and what was vision. It is never again mentioned anything about what happened during that incident, although Damon and Elena speak about all of their other encounters again and again ou at least Elena herself remembers Damon’s and her adventures several times. But no matter what was real that evening, there has to be a reason that Damon showed up as Elena summoned her husband-to-be, because the invitation was for her future husband, Elena carries out the ritual correctly and Bonnie’s ancestors swear for generations to the effectiveness of this method and to the correctness of its result.
Another example is the famous motel-night during the trip to the Dark Dimension [The Return: Shadow Souls, 7-10] and its effects. plus happened without doubt than was revealed so far. Elena only gave away until now that she held Damon in her arms all night long. But there was at least discussed more, because Elena speaks later about Damon’s feelings for Stefan and mentions Signora Salvatore in relation to that night. Damon and Elena kissed and exchanged blood many other times, and Elena doesn’t count the beginning of that night to the phase in the crucial time limits, so that toi wonder why she feels even plus guilty about that one night than she usually does, why she only tells Damon about having held him all night as he dies, and nobody else at all, and why something makes Bonnie talk about the motel-night in trance, so that Elena’s Friends know about it. The events of that night are therefore important enough to let Elena’s Friends know about it, and Elena, who speaks about this evening and night in particular, is surprised that Damon doesn’t remember especially these. The memories of that motel-night lateron cause Elena several times to rather give in to and get closer to Damon, and Elena is afraid to face Stefan after that night with Damon; she experiences fierce emotions when she thinks about that night and tries badly to hide her feelings about it from her Friends – so, toi have to ask what is responsible for such extreme reactions.
20 Everything that has something to do with Damon and Elena is dealt with most in all of the livres par far. These two pay attention to each other’s looks again and again – and how it affects them –, and their feelings for each other and the reactions of their bodies to each other are always described in detail. The development of Damon and Elena and everything that is related to them is the main emphasis of the story. Especially their relationship and its development are described most intensely; no other relationship has to go through a real development. The auteur likes écriture about Damon and Elena best, and the readers can sympathize most easily with them, and most of the time the livres deal with one of them ou mostly with them both and their mutual feelings.
These are only a few of the reasons why the "Vampire Diaries"–books lead to Damon and Elena as a couple in the end. Many examples, of which lots of others would also be fitting, can be also used for several other points. And here are plus examples to prove the predetermination of Damon and Elena being together in the end:
She remembered him. He was the one who understood her, who loved her. He was the one she wanted to be with forever. […] For him she would get up and walk through this ridiculous sleet until she found the proper clearing. Until she could rejoindre him. Then they'd be together. The very thought of him seemed to warm her. There was a feu inside him that few people could see. She saw it, though. It was like the feu inside her. [The Struggle, 16]
But then she remembered something else, just a flash: looking up at Damon's face in the woods and feeling such – such excitement, such affinity with him. As if he understood the flame that burned inside her as nobody else ever could. As if together they could do anything they liked, conquer the world ou destroy it; as if they were better than anyone else who had ever lived. [The Fury, 5]
Damon was feeling something he hadn't felt for five hundred years. He was feeling desire. Human desire. vampires didn't feel that. It was all sublimated into the need for the blood, always the blood ... But he was feeling it. [The Return: Nightfall, 31]
"All I could think of was you. All I wanted was you." (Damon to Elena) [The Return: Nightfall, 33]
Without a thought of herself, without a thought of any kind, Elena did what she did best – gave in to impulse. She threw her arms around Damon's neck and kissed him. [The Return: Nightfall, 33]
He had not even thought about a girl in this way for approximately five hundred years. vampires weren't capable of it. But Damon was – very capable – now. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 7]
And he didn't know how long he could mask the feu with ice. At any moment, he felt that he might break down, snatch her into his arms and rain kisses on her. ou stroke her cheek gently as he slowly bent to taste her lips. ou even possibly fronde her over his shoulder and take her to the quietest, dimmest part of the hayloft. He wanted her blood. But that wasn't all he wanted. He didn't want an unwilling ou influenced partner. He wanted the golden glow of Elena's l’amour to shine for him. He wanted to look down and see that special look in Elena's eyes. […] He wanted her to want him. [Damon and Elena: Tumbleweeds]
Elena felt herself begin to swoon with the intensity of the passion they had wrought between them. As a final gesture, not of repudiation, but of invitation, she arched her head back, exposing to him her bare throat, and let him feel her longing. And as if great, crystal bells were ringing in the distance, she felt his jubilation at her voluntary surrender to the velvet darkness that was overtaking her. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 9]
[…] and her quick Kiss became a longer kiss. […] and then Damon stroked her hair and time meant nothing until Meredith knocked at the door. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 20]
Thinking about what Bonnie had a dit when she was asleep, Elena reached out for comfort and understanding, and somehow found that instead of holding Damon's hand, she was in Damon's arms. […] "Whatever happened, I promise I'll still be around for you", Damon a dit softly. "You've got my word on that, anyway." Elena could feel his breath against her hair. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 26]
[…] Yes, yes, but I haven't fed properly today. Elena started, then clasped Damon closer. […] "It's ... all right", she whispered, amazed that Damon was able to stand and hold her at all, with his insides tearing at him that way. "Whatever ... toi need ... take ..." And then she felt the most gentle probing at her throat of razor-sharp teeth. She gave herself up to it, surrendering to the sensations. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 26]
[…] no, I don't want to bite toi – I only want to Kiss you, just a little, like this. There was revelation in Damon's mind-voice. And he did Kiss so sweetly, and he always knew when Elena's knees were going to give out and picked her up before she could fall on the floor. Damon, Damon, she was thinking, feeling very sweet herself because she knew she was giving him pleasure. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 32]
The waltz was over all too soon and Elena wanted to push the Replay button and do it from the beginning again. There was a moment just when the musique stopped where she and Damon were looking at each other, with equal exaltation and yearning and ... […] Elena laughed because she wanted to cry. She never wanted to stop dancing. She wanted to tango with Damon – a real tango, the kind toi were supposed to have to get married after. [The Return: Shadow Souls, 34]
And every time I look into Stefan's eyes – those jewel-green eyes that are warm with trust and gratitude – I feel terror, too. […] terror that he'll find out how I've come to feel about Damon. I hadn't even realized myself how much Damon has come to mean to me. And I can't ... stop ... my feeling ... for him, even if he hates me now. […] Oh, please, God, please don't let him hate me! He knew what it meant when her gaze went first to his lips before lifting to his eyes. […] She was surrendering all thought of herself, montrer him that despite everything she still trusted him, still ... still loved him. [The Return: Midnight, 2]
She's in l’amour with you, the tiny part of him that could still think said. She's never a dit so! […] She doesn't have to say it. She's montrer it. Don't pretend toi haven't seen it before! [The Return: Midnight, 2]
The truth was that she was still very shaken par her actions – her reactions – toward Damon. […] And ... and ... for taking poor Bonnie – and not taking her! […] And Stefan – what else could he think but that she was a woman scorned, the kind that Hell had no fury like? How could he be so kind, so caring, when anyone in their right mind would know she'd gone mad with jealousy? [The Return: Midnight, 28]
"The excitement ... I'm going to sleep in my room alone. I want to get a good night's rest. We're going on a quest, toi know?" All the truth. All a lie. […] and though she slept alone in her room, Damon didn't visit to quarrel with her, mock her, ou kill her – and certainly not to kiss. [The Return: Midnight, 28]
"But even when toi fought, toi felt the call of my cœur, coeur to yours. Try to deny that." […] and something in Elena kept whispering to her that of course she had heard his call from the moment she first saw him, first felt his aura call to her. [The Return: Midnight, 28]
With a scream that peeled raw and bleeding from her backbone and came hoarsely out of her throat, Elena grabbed a branch of the arbre that had killed Damon, that had murdered her beloved. […] But instinctively she held a high bough of the Tree's cage and let the fury explode out of her, the fury of murdered love. [The Return: Midnight, 39]
"I will never forget him. And I will never let anyone else who knew him forget him - for as long as I live." (Elena about Damon) [The Return: Midnight, 43]

When he saw her, pale golden hair gleaming about her shoulders, blue eyes Lost in shadow, he was struck silent with amazement. And with love. He had never seen anything plus beautiful in his life. […] And this was Katherine, Katherine whose beauty seemed to come from heaven, Katherine whom he loved plus than his own soul. […] He couldn't help himself; he put his arms around her, holding her to him. […] He wanted this, wanted anything that would let him be with Katherine. […] My love. The words sang through him. […] It was a feeling of giving, of nurturing. Then it was as if their minds were merging, becoming one. He could feel Katherine's joy in drinking from him. And he knew she could feel his delight in giving. [The Awakening, 11]
Haltingly, he told her about Katherine. About Katherine's beauty and sweetness, and about his l’amour for her. […] And he had been so happy, so full of awe and joy. […] Her blood burned in his veins now, he thought, and the very words made his cœur, coeur race. […] "I will never share toi with him." (Stefan to Katherine regarding Damon) [The Awakening, 13]
"I know", she added, even plus softly, "how much toi loved Katherine." (Elena to Stefan) [The Awakening, 14]
"When Katherine died", he said, "I thought I could never l’amour anyone else. Even though I knew she would have wanted me to, I was sure it could never happen. […] I kept the ring because it was a symbol of her. So I could keep her in my heart." [The Struggle, 13]

There are many other points to mention and many other emotions that Elena has for Damon and what he also is for her; and there are especially many plus examples to prove the donné reasons – but that would be too long here. Damon and Elena are the Prince and the Princess of Darkness and souls’ eternal mates; she is for him the jewel on the dungheap of humanity and he is her lovely panther. They had to realize that they can be together without ruling the world and that under their extreme physical attraction there are true and really deep feelings for each other; they had to overcome very much, but their mutual l’amour became always stronger and deeper. Because Damon and Elena both came back from death, there has to be some way to also get Katherine back – like the docile girl of the Renaissance that she was before she Lost her mind –, so that Stefan can be happy with her; because that is the only couple arrangement which makes sense. But the "Vampire Diaries"–books are mainly (frequency, intensity, depth, …) about Damon and Elena, so that the story can only be seen as a slow uniting of these two and – with all respect – the livres can’t be understood in a different way. All of the characters in the story come to this conclusion sooner ou later, because Elena’s cœur, coeur insists against her mind on Damon to whom she has all aspects of emotions, attraction, connection etc. and who is everything for her, and nothing manages to change that, because it isn’t possible for Damon and Elena to exist without the other and without their l’amour for each other. Damon and Elena belong together, fit together perfectly, were always meant for each other, harmonize perfectly, and everything leads to an end with Damon and Elena as a couple.
