toi know, whenever toi think of a good action manga involving a lot of fight scenes, toi probably think of manga like Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, ou One Piece. But not me, good sir. Oh no, I prefer to read a plus civilised manga. Like Jojo…. Wait, that’s probably equally as stupid if not more, isn’t it.
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a manga series, spanning from 1986 to today, having 8 different volumes. Part 1, Phantom Blood, follows the gentleman Jonathan Joestar who goes to defeat the vampire Dio. Part 2, Battle Tendency, has Jonathan’s grandson, Joseph Joestar, battle against the ancient vampires, The Pillar Men. Part 3, Stardust Crusaders, follows the grandson of Joseph, Jotaro Kujo, as he travels to Egypt with his companions to save his mother. Part 4 follows Joseph’s illegitimate child, Josuke Higashikata, as he tries to protect the town of Morioh from a crazed killer and other people donné Stands par a bow and arrow. Part 5, Vento Aureo, follows Giorno Giovanna, the son of Dio, as he tries to fight off the mafia in order to become a “gang-star”. Part 6, Stone Ocean, follows the daughter of Jotaro, Jolyne Cujoh, who is sent to prison, and must retrieve her father’s stolen Stand from Enrico Pucci, a follower of Dio. Part 7, Steel Ball Run, set in a different time line, follows the duo Johnny Joestar and gyro Zeppeli as they try to win the Steel Ball Run while they try to defeat the president, Funny Valentine. And Part 8, Jojolion, follows a Joestar with amnesia as he tries to remember who he is. So naturally, this series is pretty… bizarre (HA!)
The series once had an animated series, ou rather, an OVA (Original Video Animation) from the start back in 1993, but that only followed the plus populaire manga of the three, Stardust Crusaders, and did not have anything to do with Phantom Blood ou Battle Tendency. There was originally a Phantom Blood movie, but nobody liked it. Hell, Jojo creator himself, Hirohiko Araki, was so disgusted par the film, that he demanded that the film does not get released, and now, the only way to actually know of it’s existence if toi were at the theater in Japon when it came out, ou if toi just so happen to find footage that was leaked onto Youtube. Sadly, with this much of a hassle, it’s most likely we are far away from finding a good Jojo anime… Is what I would say. Thanks to David Productions, we were able to get a full Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure series, starting with Phantom Blood in 2012. The series does stay truthful to the series, I will admit. They manage to stay incredibly faithful to the manga in about every sense of the word. So, is this an animé worth checking out- Yes! I mean… Let’s look over it and find out.
So the animé started with Phantom Blood, which in my opinion, isn’t the best of the Jojo franchise, but a good starting point for the franchise. It starts in 1888 London, with our hero, Jonathan, who acts like a true gentleman, which, I gotta admit, that is an interesting choice for a protagonist. Not a lot of animé like this has characters like that. Sadly, after a while, he gets a bit too predictable. I mean, his personality is basically JUST being a gentleman. Nothing else. Then toi got his adopted evil brother, Dio… I can not tell toi how awesome Dio is. He is one of the most conniving bastards in anime, always wanting to be one step ahead of Jonathan in every way, and I l’amour him. toi also got Will A. Zeppeli, who teaches Jonathan about a technique called the Ripple that allows him to defeat Dio, who has become a vampire using the Stone Mask (It makes plus sense if toi read the manga). Then toi got Speedwagon…. I don’t think he did much. Also, Erina, Jonathan’s obvious l’amour interest…. At least she’s not Speedwagon? Anyway, Part 1 is probably the shortest of the franchise, and there is no surprise there. Jonathan goes to fight Dio, fights Dio, spoiler stuff I can’t mention here in the review, credits. toi can finish part one in a jour if toi want. There are only nine episodes of Phantom Blood. But, fret not. Battle Tendency is the suivant one on our list, and we may have just found the best Joestar here.
Battle Tendency takes place in 1938 America, with the grandson of Jonathan, Joseph Joestar, and OH DEAR LORD, his personality is amazing. He is NOTHING like Jonathan. He is rude, brash, always lashing out at people he doesn’t like, has no respect for authority figures, and is always playing around with people, even when he knows the person he’s messing with is incredibly dangerous. Joseph’s goal in this story is to defeat the three Pillar Men, a race of ancient vampires with high strength and intelligence, who have survived for thousands of years. The Pillar Men consist of Esidisi, Whamu, and their leader, Kars. So Joseph, with the help of his italian companion, Caesar Zeppeli, and his teacher, Lisa Lisa, must travel to Europe in order to defeat the Pillar Men. Now, the Pillar Men…. I don’t hate them, but sheesh, these guys are just too damn silly to take seriously. Maybe it’s the extreme lack of clothing. I don’t know. Also, par this point in the franchise, toi will start to notice something a bit... weird. WHY IN THE HELL DOES EVERYONE STOP WHAT THEY’RE DOING TO POSE!? toi will start seeing that every character poses like their on the cover for a magazine. It’s bizarre- (Okay, not making that joke again). Seriously, people do this every five seconds. I should hate it, but it’s so silly that I l’amour it so much. Okay, onto Stardust Crusaders.
Stardust Crusaders is the most populaire of the series, and it definitely shows. It follows the Jotaro Kujo, who is the son of houx Joestar/Kujo, being the daughter of Joseph, who moved to Japon after she married. Jotaro is… not a very nice guy. He beats up people, is rude, brash, and insults his mother and every other girl that annoys him whenever they get on his nerves. He may seem like an unlikable character, but he does indeed l’amour his mother, and even risks his life par going to Egypt to save her. How is going to Egypt deadly toi ask? Well…. Dio is still alive, and he sent of a dozen Stand users to kill him and his companions. Speaking of which, Jotaro has four companions to help him on his trip to Egypt. toi got Joseph still there, still lovable as always, only he’s elderly now. Then toi got the Egyptian fortune teller, Muhammad Avdol, who is very serious and plus mature than other members of the group. There’s Noriaki Kakyoin, a Japanese school student who is very loyal to Jotaro after he saved his life. There’s Jean Pierre Polnareff, a French swordsman who acts as a not annoying comic relief character, so points for that. Then there’s Iggy, a dog who isn’t very fond of people. Now, toi heard me talk about Stands. So, what is a Stand, says people who don’t watch Jojo. Well, a Stand is a thing that basically made the Ripple pointless as hell, as it has spirits come to battle foes and protect their users from harm. Pretty simple stuff, really (By that I mean it’s complicated as hell).
Then we get to Part 4, which follows Josuke Higashikata. Josuke is probably the least threatening Joestar in the series, and that is what makes him amazing. Josuke is a very timid and shy character, being scared of simple things, like turtles. However, he will fight if he has too. He will also completely destroy someone if they insult his hair. Seriously, don’t do it. It never ends well. toi also have his loyal friend, Koichi Hirose, the midget, and Okuyasu Nijimura, the lovable dumbass. Here, toi can easily see a change in shift in the animation. Some people may hate this, but I actually like it, as this change was actually present in the manga, as Araki’s art style changed from Fist of the North étoile, star to freaking cover of Vogue material. Seriously, every character went from burly manly man to looking absolutely FABULOUS (I should coup de poing myself for saying that). So, I can tolerate the change in art style, except one thing. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO étoile, star PLATINUM'S FACE! Oh god, did Dio’s Road Roller mess up étoile, star Platinum plus than I thought?
So, yeah. This series if very Bi- ….. Strange. There is a lot going on for a simple animé series. This is a series I would only recommend if toi are interested in the whole “giants of men beating the crap out of each other, posing before every fight, and trying it’s hardest to have plus memes created then the Attack on Titan fandom”. So, to help with toi all, I have created a pie chart of the series below, to help give toi an idea of how the whole series works. So, yeah, if you’re into crazy, insane stuff, like me, than this is for you. Who knows, maybe behind all the crazy, and completely messed up stuff, lies a wonderful series.
