While he may seem charming to the viewer/fangirl, his entire drive is really about caring; he cares deeply about those around him: his mother, Padme, Obi-Wan, and then Palpatine. His eventual turning of sides is all catalyzed by his underlying love for those around him, and his desperation to save them.

I agree with the previous, eloquent, comment. Anakin cares so deeply for the people he loves that he essentially sacrifices himself to try and save them. His life is so bereft of love and caring after his mother's death that he gives himself to both Padme and Palpatine, killing himself in the process.
