Maka's name is an anagram of 'Kama' which is Japanese for 'scythe.' In one piece of early concept art, Maka's name was also written in kanji, 摩訶. This may mean that Maka's original kanji-based name was a pun on the Japanese phrase 摩訶不思議 (Maka Fushigi, meaning 'very mysterious' or 'supernatural' in Japanese) before being changed to katakana and acting as an anagram of 'Kama' instead.
