I don't know if he's real or fake but he is supposed to be the brother of Notch (the game's developer) who died. But is still playing and does strange stuff like destroy things or attack people.

Its just a myth. There is no Herobrine unless you get a certain mod. Heres a short story someone wrote up(click to enlarge):
