fans may grieve the impending end of the beloved fantasy series, Maisie Williams is taking a more positive, if blunt, approach: “It’s time to wrap this up.”
, the Arya actress commented on the shortened seventh season. “Good things must come to an end or they’re not good anymore,” she said. “It doesn’t last forever, and we’ve done what we came to do. It’s time to wrap this up, and it will have the ending it was always supposed to have, and that’s very special.”
Be warned of spoilers from season 6, but the finale left Westeros ripe for a heated final countdown: With mad Queen Cersei now seated on the Iron Throne, Daenerys is sailing westward with dragons, Dothraki, and Ironborn comrades in tow. Meanwhile, the Stark clan is rising again — even Arya was able to enact some revenge.
“I was so thrilled. Honestly so thrilled,” Williams laughed, recalling her reaction to her character’s assassination of Walder Frey. “Everyone, from all departments, said, ‘You have got the best kill of any kill ever. I don’t think there’s a single person in the world that won’t be thrilled that Walder Frey is gone.’ So it felt very, very good.”
She added, “There’s this one take where we did a close-up and I slit his throat and he’s bleeding out and I got this perfect little speck of blood just above my collarbone on my neck. It wasn’t like Tarantino blood everywhere, just this one little speck, and it happened naturally, it happened realistically, and you literally couldn’t have flicked a bit of blood on better.”
Seven episodes are planned for next season, and the producers previously told EW they are planning for six episodes for the eighth and final season. Williams noted that series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss “started this with an end in sight, and so it’s exciting to be closing it.”
, the series won’t return until summer of 2017 to give the cast and crew time to film under more “grim gray weather,” as the creators put it.
