At the risk of just seeming like one of those crazy internet people who just yells their opinions (who am I kidding? Thats exactly what I am!), I wanted to talk about the 2011 Oscar nominations...
Inception has been nominated for 8 Oscars in 2011, including:
Best Picture
Best Original Screenplay
Best Cinematography
Best Original Score
Best Art Direction
Best Sound Mixing
Best Sound Editing
Best Visual Effects
8 nominations is brilliant par anyone's standard, but lets be honest: where the hell is the directing nomination for Christopher Nolan?
A lot of Inception fans seemed pretty shocked when Nolan didn't pick up the 2011 Best Director Golden Globe. Personally, the Golden Globes never match up to what I think, so I wasn't that surprised that he missed out.
However, the fact that he has missed out on even a nomination for this year's Oscars has baffled me. Especially since most of the people I know who I've talked to about Inception (even if they didn't like the movie) a dit that he would probably win the Oscar for it. Can't win if toi aren't nominated!
So, here's what bugs me: Inception is nominated for both Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. No arguments there. But the purpose and duty of a director is to take a screenplay and direct, create and realise the content of the screenplay to make a great movie. Logic dictates, then, that if Nolan is nominated for his screenplay, and also nominated for the movie that that screenplay became, then surely Nolan's direction has been instrumental in that process. How is is possible to be nominated for the beginning of the idea (the screenplay) and the end result of the idea (the movie) and not be nominated for the execution of the idea (the direction)? Surely, if the screenplay is nomination-worthy, and the movie is nomination-worthy, then the direction that blended the two is also nomination-worthy.
I'm not trying to belittle the other Best Director nominees. I haven't even been donné the opportunity to see half of them, so I'm not pissing on their parades. I'm just stumped par this specific Oscar snub, rather than the inclusion of any of the other directors.
We all know that these things aren't exactly politics-free (in fact, it's all corrupt as hell). And we all know that voting members are not exactly that in touch with what the rest of the world thinks, let alone what Inception fans think. But toi would have to hope that at least one ou two of them has the insight to be a little embarrassed par Nolan's directing snub, donné how glaringly obvious it is.
So, I just had to vent that. It really doesn't matter, in the grand scheme of things. I mean, its an awards show, and one that we all have our issues with, if we care at all. I personally think it is an absolute CRIME that Marion Cotillard was not nominated for her role. The only other jouer la comédie performances I rate better are Angelina Jolie in 'Girl, Interrupted' and Jim Carrey in 'Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind'. But thats just me. I clearly do not agree with the Academy...
