Well, definitely not in a way that Ariel brags like Gaston, and not in a way that she would kill anyone, but like, both Ariel and Gaston only go for the looks when they like the other person ( Ariel just liked Eric because of his looks, she fell in love and didn't even know him, if he was ugly she wouldn't have even looked closely at him/Gaston, well, as you all know just likes Belle because she's pretty)

No. I think Ariel's a *lot* nicer than Gaston. I'd compare Ariel to Jack Skellington from the NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, especially considering that Ariel wanted life beyond the sea, just like Jack wanted more beyond Halloweentown. The problem is that they're both so excited that it overrides all common sense and nearly leads to tragedy, but they end up saving the day in the end (at least Ariel does in the musical). The only difference is that Jack gets with a friend of his, Sally, and Ariel gets with Eric, someone that she mostly saw in passing at first before really getting to know.

That and I don't see Ariel trying to force Eric to marry her or anything. And she and Eric *do* get to know each other -- granted, it's while Ariel can't talk, but they still get to do some things together, and Ariel gets to experience the human life (puppet shows, dancing, brushing her hair with a fork, etc.). So no, I really don't see any similarities between her and Gaston. (Then again, I think Gaston's a twit, and I love Ariel, so I may be slightly biased. :)

Gaston is malicious, Ariel is just thoughtless. She doesn't want to hurt people, it's an unintentional side affect of her thoughtlessness and recklessness, Gaston doesn't care if he hurts people, and will happily do it intentionally if it helps. About the shallowness, in Disney I can accept the idea of love at first sight, which isn't what's supposed to have happened to Gaston, he wants Belle as a trophy, not a partner. Ariel is meant to actually love Eric, she just falls in an unrealistic way. I guess I see why the people more put off by her faults than me would find a comparison, but personally don't think they are similar.

Granted Ariel is more tame compared to Gaston but its still the same in my book. They both are a lot alike not the same but their methods are very similar. Good question more!

She's nothing like Gaston! Just because she left her family for love and supposedly fell for him because of his looks doesn't mean she's like Gaston. If someone thinks she like Gaston they obviously haven't seen either of the movies in a LONG time. 1. Did she not have a f-ing sculpture of him in her cave before she even professed her love to him, 2. did she not go to Ursula to have some magic done on her to get closer to him, and 3 besides the fact he is handsome what other words did she use to describe him, she was caught up in his looks at first simple.

Not even close and I agree with Kataralover,hisblueeyes,SnowyFirefly,and ladyhadhafang (even though I don't like the nightmare before christmas)!!!Ariel and Gaston are nothing alike. I hope nobody is gonna do the same question only with Rapunzel and another disney villian!!!

I think even if Ariel hadn't met Eric, She still would of left her family at some point, because she wants to know more about the human world. Also, she had originally planned to meet Eric by going up to the surface and splash around until she got his attention, but then, she became distraught after her father destroyed her collection. Which ended up being the perfect time for Ursula to put her plan into action.

I don't remember Ariel blackmailing Eric into marrying her, and I don't remember Ariel trying to kill someone that Eric loved and knew that they loved him back.

So, while both of them become obsessed with another human, that's not enough for me to say yes.

She's not the agressive type compare to Gaston.

I would like to chime in that it wasn't just Eric's looks that attracted Ariel. She saw Eric interact with his crew, his dog, and Grimsby, along with attempting to save all of them. She saw that he was selfless, caring, considerate, and a romantic (he wouldn't go for the Princess of Glauerhaven because she wasn't "the one" for him). Initially she saw him and thought he was handsome, but there are also other reasons. Plus he plays the flute, tons of girls fall for musicians. So, no Ariel is not like Gaston.

Ribon95 I'd like to point out something that you and all the Ariel haters are completely oblivious and ignorant to; so pay attention cause I'm tired of always having to tell this. She saw more than just his looks, if you payed real close attention than you could see how she saw so much more. When he played with Max showed he was playful, playing the flute shows he loves music, his reaction from the stature of himself shows he's not arrogant or vain, saying he wants to marry a girl he loves shows he's sweet and cares about more than just power, and when he risks his life to save Max shows he's brave and selfless. So Ariel managed to see alot about him before even officially meeting him. Sure she found him handsome. Is that a crime? I doubt that's the only reason she went through so much trouble.

KataraLover, first I would like to thank for making this debate stimulating i enjoy hearing your point of view even if I disagree with it. ^_^

However, I will point out again "when" did she "say" anything to others about Eric besides his looks. It is not a crime to love his looks, this isn't about Ariel in the since of how deep her affection was for him. This about acknowledging that her and Gaston are similar in their methods (how and what methods they wanted to get closer to their loved ones). Not you nor anyone else has yet to prove to me how they are not similar based on my 3 points.
I never said that she and Gaston were the same or that she is as evil as him. I said that they have similar methods as well as characteristics that are similar.

Perhaps me saying yes is interpreted as me downing Ariel's character (not my intention)by saying she is as evil as Gaston. However, I will say that saying no, for an answer in my opinion not fully truthful. Like I said before, there is a point in this question,its supposed to make you think. I could be wrong in my answer but the point is that I have laid 3 facts that have yet to be questioned or "proven" invalid. Unless I am convinced otherwise I have to say "yes" since I can't prove that the other is completely true.

tiagih I was naming a way to disagree about how they both respond only to looks. Gaston only loved Belle's looks but Ariel saw so much more than just Eric's looks.

You know now that I think of it, in the little mermaid when Grimsy announced that Eric was marrying Vassesa, Ariel didn't try to kill her or anything she just ran and cry where in beauty and the beast when Gaston knew that Belle loved the beast and not him, he made stuff up about the beast and led a big mob just and only so he can kill the beast himself. He even said quotes like " take whatever booty you can find but remember the beast is mine" and "Its over beast! Belle is mine!" So we would know that Gaston wanted to kill the beast cause Belle loved him. Ariel didn't try to kill Vanessa even though it was actually Ursula.

@KataraLover, I understand. I think the issue is that how Gaston "loved" Belle was different then how Ariel "loved" Eric. I will say that while I may not be 100% right, I can't prove that saying no is completely correct either. Gaston and Ariel has similar methods, not similar personality. Thank you for making this question more interesting by giving me another perspective.

ok, have you read anything I wrote down. I will say this again since I assume you haven't. They are alike, not the SAME.I try to chose my words correctly because diction matters to some people.
They have SIMILAR methods of trying to get closer to the one they "love" (subjective word).
did i say that Ariel was evil, did i say that she ever threaten someone to get Eric, did i ever say or write down that she killed someone for him. All answers are no.
Please with all due respect, if you going to comment on someone else opinion check to see what they wrote and get and understanding of it first. To repeat I laid three points of how they are alike, you are free to debate with me about it.
