I'm not sure how I feel about Merida, but I definitely like her better. Unlike Ariel, she acknowledges, takes responsibility for, and actively makes amends for her earlier selfish actions.
Ariel doesn't think about others, makes half-hearted excuses after she's been caught ("I didn't mean to, I didn't know"), blames others ("You monster!" instead of "What have I done?"), or just doesn't bother apologizing to the people she's hurt at all (like her father after Ursula is defeated). Even after everyone saves her from her own stupid action (her dad taking her place and Eric defeating Ursula), she just goes right back to mooning over Eric like nothing happened.
Merida starts off saying "It's not my fault" to everything, but eventually realizes that her stunt at the archery tournament causes all the clans to be on the brink of war. She admits to their faces that she was being selfish, and is willing to give up the thing she wants most (her freedom) to bring peace to the kingdom (by getting married).
Merida later tries to mend the literal tapestry because she thinks it'll save her mom from being trapped as a bear WHILE rushing to save her mom's literal life. As the second rises, Merida finally fully accepts responsibility for what's happened. She breaks down in tears, and admits it's all her fault, and that she never should have tried to change her at all. "You've always been there for me. You've never given up on me. I want you back. I love you, mommy."
THAT is a girl who can take responsibility for her actions and put others before her own desires. Ariel is presented with the opportunity to put others before herself and/or take responsibility for her acitons many times and makes half-hearted attempts at best ("I'm sorry, I just forgot" and "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, I didn't know"), doesn't even bother at worst.
I like Merida better.
