LAKESHORE RECORDS TO RELEASE DEFENDOR SOUNDTRACK

“John Rowley's work is great in the way it evokes superheroic imagery while also feeling gritty and street level, giving a counterpoint to the reality on screen. The music is what Defendor must be hearing in his head.” – Devin Faraci, www.chud.com

(April 14, 2010- Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the Defendor -- Original Soundtrack, available digitally (iTunes and Amazon Digital) on April 27, 2010. John Rowley (Weirdsville, The Best Years) composed the original score.

John Rowley is a Toronto-based composer and music supervisor who has worked on numerous film and television projects including Rookie Blue, Wild Roses, Weirdsville, The Best Years, Fugitive Pieces, Citizen Duane, Cake, One Dead Indian, The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico and The Dark Hours.

“Defendor was a dream project for me,” describes Rowley. “Where film music is usually subtle, even to the point where it is not noticeable, the superhero genre demands music that is bold, anthemic and memorable. Director Peter Stebbings and I had the idea that the music in the film should be the soundtrack that plays in Arthur's mind as he dons the guise of Defendor. As such, the score draws inspiration from familiar and classic superhero themes.”

Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson) is a regular man who adopts a superhero persona known as Defendor and combs the city streets at night in search of his arch enemy Captain Industry.
In his attempts to combat crime and bring down this drug and weapons dealer, whom he mistakenly blames for the death of his mother, Defendor ends up befriending a young prostitute (Kat Dennigns).

Armed with unconventional weapons, like marbles and paper clips, and with his new friend by his side, Defendor proves that everyone is capable of making a difference as he puts his life on the line and foils the entire crime operation.

"While we wanted pay homage to classic superhero themes, it was also important that the music reflect the tremendous heart, humor and DIY aesthetic of Woody Harrelson's Arthur,” said Rowley. “So, while the score has elements of great bombast, bravado and a 'big' Hollywood sound, these are balanced by smaller moments of lightness, tenderness and even tragedy. In the end, I hope the score reflects Defendor's persona: no superpowers, but a hell of a lot of heart."

Defendor is written and directed by Peter Stebbings, starring Woody Harrelson, Kat Dennings, Sandra Oh, Elias Koteas, Michael Kelly, Lisa Ray and Charlotte Sullivan.

Sony Pictures presents Defendor, in theaters now. The Defendor – Original Soundtrack on Lakeshore Records will be available digitally on April 27, 2010.
