Blake sat in his cold den, the stone walls not helping with keeping it warm. "Snowbell," he mummered to his mate, who was curled up in the corner. "I think the time has come."
"What?" the white she-cat shot up immediately. "Do toi mean. . .?"
Blake solemnly nodded. "All four, together,"
Snowbell shook her head slowly. "No," she insisted. "No way. Totally unsafe, unreal. There's not way I'm letting your bring that much danger to four Clans that have hungry kits and queens! We have newborn kits here in FireClan, and Dappledwing of MidnightClan is going to have her kits soon. toi can't just-"
Blake hushed the chatty she-cat with a whip of his tail. "Shush, my dear one," he ordered sweetly. "All this chit-chat is giving me a hard time to think."
Snowbell twitched her whiskers in annoyance. Her fluffy white fourrure was spotted with snowflakes, them all sticking like ticks to her fur. "You do what toi want," she a dit impatiently. "Just don't come to me when someone dies. . ." she stepped out of the den, a bit of humor to her tone.
Blake snorted and fallowed her out into the snow. "Like Frost's kits," he mentioned.
"And Isabella's kits," Snowbell added.
"Also Midnight's, and Emily's too." Blake put in.
They both sighed as they walked slowly over to the center of the clearing. Lightning was wrestling with May, Amanda was getting ready to go out to train with her mentor, Phineas, and Midnight was busy giving April a wash. Blake frowned and his belly churned. Could he really throw all this away just to one stupid pack? No. No! His Clan was too special.
He glanced at Snowbell.
She was too special.
He couldn't loose all this. Blake noticed his son about to leave with Amy. "Brendon, wait," he caught the white tom.
Brendon looked up. "Yes?"
"Where are toi going?"
". . .Hunting. . ." Brendon seemed confused. "Why?"
Blake looked down at his paws and mummered something.
"What?" Brendon asked, not hearing what his father said.
Blake mummered again.
"Father, you're wasting my day,"
Blake looked up. "The Prophecy," he a dit quietly.
Brendon blinked in astonishment. "Are toi true?"
"Of course I'm true!" Blake snapped at his son. "Why would I be kidding about this? My son, be logical. Use common sense." And with that, the brown tom stomped away, anger trailing not too far behind. After a while, everyone went inside their dens for sleep, since the sun had now set for good. Night pulled over the forest, a chilling breeze covering the clearing.Just a few plus days. . .
The warm, soft scents of the nursery came to life as Marie's senses came back to her. With a large yawn, she opened her midnight blue eyes and saw her mother still sleeping. She was sleeping awfully late. "Momma," she urged, pawing her. Isabella did not wake up. Marie knew what she had to do. Smirking and holding back giggles, Marie took a deep breath and shouted into her mother's ears, "MOM! Wake up! We're being ambushed par six hungry badgers and they're making their way to the nursery!" Like a bullet, the black she-cat shot up straight and gasped. "Where!?" she yowled, getting up and shifting around in the den. Realizing there was nothing around but a smile on her daughter's face made her angry.
"Ha, ha, ha," she laughed sarcastically. "Very funny, Marie."
Marie chuckled. "You would not wake up," she shrugged. But her calls of alarm had not only woken her mother, but Frost, Midnight, Emily, and their kits as well. May was screaming bloody murder while Emily looked un-pleased. Because of May's desperate cries, Blake burst in the den, a scared look on his face. "What's going on?" he demanded. "Is someone hurt?"
Midnight shook her head as she shushed her kit. "No," she growled. "Just one of Marie's little tricks."
Isabella growled at Midnight's harsh words. "Keep your thoughts to yourself," she spat angrily.
Marie blinked, then walked over to Amber. "Hey," she whispered. "Sorry for waking you."
"No problem there," Amber sighed. "It's not like I needed to wake up today. . ."
Marie raised and eyebrow. "What?"
"Don't toi know?" Before continuing, Amber led Marie to the very corner of the den. Unlike other Clan's den, all of FireClan's dens were huge. Enough room for twenty-three cats(well, twenty-three squeezed in, packed tight), so there was plenty of l’espace to déplacer around.
". . .My sister is dead. Didn't toi realize she was not here last night?" Amber went on, a sad look clouding her eyes.
Marie nodded. "I know perfectly well what happened," she intended. "Don't act like I'm stupid, Amber, my father is one of the smartest chats in the Clan. . ."
"S-so you're calling my father stupid!?" Amber challenged, no humorly tone to her voice. She was serious.
"What? No!" Marie gasped. "You're father isn't stupid. He's really smart. Remember when your mother was close to death, and only your father knew what to do? That was very smart. He's strong too. In fact, he would be a great mentor. . ."
". . .for me." Amber finished for her, a challenging look sparkling in her eyes.
Marie looked down. "Yeah," she said. After a long, awkward moment of silence, Marie spoke up again, changing the subject. "You're so lucky, Amber." she sighed.
"How's that?"
"You've got a brother and a sis- a brother. I want a little sibling. I could teach it everything I know."
Amber stood up. "I'm hungry," she began, changing their conversation. "I wonder what's to eat."
Marie was confused. Why didn't Amber want to talk to her? "Amb-"
But the light tabby was already strutting away, her tail held high.
Marie huffed and turned away, pushing herself out of the nursery to where Clan life was stirring. "Mother," she called before heading out. "I'm going now."
"Oh, no you're not!" Her mother teased, pulling her back in playfully. Marie squealed, jerking all around until she came free and nipped her mother's ear. "I've got you," Marie giggled, letting go.
"Yes, I suppose toi do," Isabella laughed. "Now toi go have fun." She nudged Marie, who bounded out but to only run into one of the female warriors, Cleah.
"Oh!" The light brown she-cat gasped. "You startled me. Hi, Marie!"
"Hi," Marie purred.
"How are toi today?" Cleah asked warmly.
"Fine, fine. I'm just going to find my dad."
"Oh, he just left."
Marie frowned. "But-"
"He'll be back within an heure ou two," Cleah a dit sweetly. "But for now, I have big news."
Marie immediately got excited. "Really? What?"
Cleah sheepishly smiled. "Well, I'm going to have to déplacer into the Queens' den, I will be having kits."
"Ooh!" Marie jumped up on tip-toes and squeaked. "Who is the father?"
Cleah hesitated before she answered. "If a Queen does not wish to tell, she will not tell."
"Oh. . ." Marie was a bit disappointed. "Okay, then. Well, I'm going to go."
"Marie," Cleah called just as the red she-cat was walking away. "Stay inside the camp!"
"You sound like my mother," Marie growled, annoyed.
She trotted over to the bramble entrance, keeping an eye out for anyone watching. Kits were not aloud to leave the camp. She scurried out quickly, thorns scraping her fourrure as she slid. Marie held back a squeal of pain as she crawled out, and into the forest. "Whoa. . ." she breathed. All the scents were new; she had never been out here before. Excited now, Marie waved her tail happily and bounded off. Now she was curious of to which way to go. She lifted up her head, taking in the scent around and could detect a hint of her father; east. Fallowing the direction, Marie politely walked towards her destination. After a while, she started humming a tune and didn't notice she had crossed the border into CloudClan territory. "Ooh," she gawked at the huge log that hung over the flowing river to CloudClan territory. She did not know the borders, since she had never been out of camp. She gingerly stepped onto the log, unaware of how slippery it was. The red she-kit Lost her footing, slipping. She quickly, grabbed hold of hanging root from below the log, snagging it with her claws. "Help!" she squealed. "Save me, someone!" The cold river swished and tumbled three tail-lengths below, just waiting to avaler, hirondelle her up. "Daddy!! Amanda!!" Marie couldn't hold on much longer, so she wailed loudly, hoping someone would hear.
Amanda crouched low, eying the plump voice closely. This was her first assessment, having to catch three pieces of prey within a good hour. She was just about to pounce on the dumb thing when a squeal for help caught her ears. The vole must have heard it too, because the fuzzy brown creature went running. Well, there goes my catch, she thought, annoyed. Amanda's mentor stepped out, his ears pricked. "You hear that?" he asked, looking around.
Amanda meowed, "Should we see what it is?"
Phineas nodded. "That would be best. It sounds like a kit in danger." The two chats ran through the undergrowth, fallowing their ears. Amanda took advantage and ran faster, pelting through the forest with her strong hind legs. Her mentor gradually went faster too, trying to keep in step with the orange she-cat. Amanda thrusted vers l'avant, vers l’avant into a leap, landing not so gracefully. She turned into a run again, not slowing down for anything. Her paws felt sore from all the running, and she thought for a moment there that her mentor was not behind her. Then she felt reassured when the sound of pounding paws steps came up from behind. Suddenly, the call for help stopped. Was the cat safe?
Marie had fallen, her voice muffled par the water. The cold chill overtook her as it grasped her entire body. Marie felt like she had just been frozen. She couldn't swim, so she kicked her hind legs, bobbing her head up every few secondes to gulp in air. "Hel-" she was cut off as her head went under again. The strong thrashing of the water kept her under, and it felt like a boulder had fallen on haut, retour au début of her, pinning her down underneath. Terrified, Marie began to except her fate, sinking. Before she closed her eyes, and body slammed into the water, grabbing her par the scruff. The cat's powerful front legs pulled her up and out of the water, onto land. She must have flowed pretty far down the river, because the log was no where in sight and she was in a large moorland field. Two chats stared wide-eyed at her with soaking wet pelts.
"Are toi alright?" a she-cat's voice asked calmly, crouching down to lick her head to warm her. Marie's chest heaved, taking in air. The she-cat had long black fourrure and green eyes, and a soft, assuring voice. Marie was alive!
"You're lucky we were on patrol," a tom sighed. Marie coughed and sputtered, vomiting up a mouthful of water.
"I-I'm alright," she choked, growing limp and falling to the ground, breathing slowly.
"We'd better get her back to camp and warm her up in the nursery, Hollyshine," The tom suggested. "She doesn't look much older than two moons."
Hollyshine nodded and picked Marie up par the scruff. "Whitestar wont appreciate us bringing an enemy Clan kit to our camp, Thornwhisker." Hollyshine mewed sternly to the gray tom, with a flicker of fierceness in her gaze.
All the while way back to CloudClan camp, Marie hung helplessly, just taking in the air. Before she knew it, all new smells filled her nostrils and the sound of chats surrounded the area.
"Hollyshine, why are toi wet?" a female voice asked. "Don't tell me toi were going for a swim in leaf-bare!"
Hollyshine shrugged. "This kit was in danger, Flowfall. I had to save it! toi know part of the warrior code: never neglect a kit in danger even if it is from a different Clan."
Flowfall rolled her bright green eyes. "Whatever. toi could bring her to Skysong, I'm sure she'd warm her up." The white she-cat looked at Whitestar's den. "I'll speak to Whitestar."
Hollyshine nodded. "Thanks," the black she-cat trotted away from Flowfall and headed to the queens' den. "Skysong?" she called in a whisper. "I need a favor. . ."
The very pale sky blue she-cat looked up from her sleeping kits. Her amber eyes glowed with tiredness. "Yes, Hollyshine? Wait, why are toi wet? Is that a kit toi have?"
Hollyshine looked at her paws and walked in, setting the cold kit down suivant to the queen. "This kit was drowning in the river. I saved her. She's alive, but very cold and needs to be warmed up."
"I can detect a small scent of FireClan," Skysong put in, wrapping her tail around Marie. Her other kit's scooted away from Marie, who was drenched. Skysong lay her head down. "Once she's warmed enough, we should bring her to Flightfur. He's the medicine cat so he can check on her."
Hollyshine thanked Skysong and headed out, only to bump into Leopardspot.
"Oh!" the spotted she-cat jumped. "Hi, Hollyshine. How are you?"
"Freezing," Hollyshine answered, a bit of amusement in her tone. "Just jumped into the river to save a kit."
Leopardspot's eyes widened. "Really, now?"
Hollyshine nodded. "Thornwhisker was there too, but he didn't bother to help."
Leopardspot whisked her tail excitedly. "I was just about to take Fillypaw out for training," she glanced at the cream-colored apprentice across the clearing. "Care to come? She'd l’amour the company."
Hollyshine shook her head. "No thanks, I'm freezing. I'd like to get warm." The black she-cat blinked. "But thanks for the offer."
Leopardspot frowned. "Okay, then. . . Bye!" The spotted brown she-cat bounded off to Fillypaw, who got up immediately. Finally, Hollyshine thought in relief as she slid into her nest and closed her eyes.
Amanda shrugged. "I don't see anything, nor do I hear anything anymore."
Phineas twitched his whiskers. "Let's head back to camp and tell everyone to keep a look-out,"
Amanda fallowed her mentor back to camp, where a shrilling wail cut through the air from Isabella. "Marie is missing!"
Blake sat in his cold den, the stone walls not helping with keeping it warm. "Snowbell," he mummered to his mate, who was curled up in the corner. "I think the time has come."
