Prologue
Frostkit snuggled into her mother's warmth. She felt her brother and sister purring, as they too fell asleep. When Goldenrose thought that all her kits were asleep, she slowly rose to her paws. Frostkit shivered as the warmth offered par her mother's body left. She raised her head the slightest bit to see where her mother was going. Goldenrose padded out of their shelter made of leftover twoleg wood. Frostkit heard the leaves crunching as her mother walked away from her. When the sound was distant, Frostkit quietly left the tanière, den as well. After what seemed like ages of following her mother, Frostkit almost bumped right into her, and exposed herself. She stopped herself just in time as the dark furred tom stepped out of the woods.
“Darkpine,” Goldenrose a dit warmly.
“Goldenrose,” Darkpine acknowledged, "There is much we must talk about. There has been talk. Talk of dangerous things happening in these forests.”
“What sort of things?” Suddenly, Frostkit felt herself slipping. She realized she had been slowly padding vers l'avant, vers l’avant to hear the conversation. She tried to regain her balance, but fell. As she rolled down the hill, she saw a cliff. And she was heading straight towards it. Then she noticed the mysterious dark tom, Darkpine, racing along beside her. He grabbed her scruff, tossed her back up the colline to Goldenrose. The impact was too much for him. He skidded down the rest of the way. Frostkit watched as the tom that saved her went over the cliff. Just before she began to roll down again, Goldenrose lunged vers l'avant, vers l’avant and grabbed her, pulling her to safety. Frostkit notice the grief in her mother's eyes, the pain that made Frostkit wonder who this strange cat, who had just sacrificed his life for her, was. When her mother put her down, Frostkit backed away as Goldenrose wailed her pain to the sky.
“Why, why would toi do this to me, to him, who has done nothing wrong? How dare toi take him from me? I will curse your name forever, Starclan!” Suddenly, Goldenrose lunged at her kit, with crazed look in her eyes. Frostkit was momentarily stunned with shock, but she didn't have much time to think about it. She dodged her mother's first attack, but naturally her mother was older, stronger, and quicker. With no attempt to keep her claws sheathed, Goldenrose leapt towards Frostkit and pinned her down. Frostkit winced as her loving mother's claws dug into her shoulders. In one smooth, strong movement, Goldenrose flipped Frostkit onto her back harshly, knocking the breath out of her.
“You killed my mate. toi killed your own father. toi are not my kit. toi never have been. toi never will be. I will never, ever forgive you. Get. Out. Now. ou I'll kill toi as toi killed your father.” Frostkit hesitated, weak with the idea that her mother would so easily hate her. “Do toi not understand?” She snarled. “I hate you. Leave. Never. Come. Back.” Frostkit looked up at her mother with wide eyes. She turned about to leave, but it was too late. Goldenrose ran out of patience. Her mother lunged at her once more, and used the same déplacer that she had before to expose her kits belly. Frostkit wailed as Goldenrose clawed her ear.
“Stop!” She cried pitifully. But her mother was beyond reason. Frostkit felt as if her world was ending as her mother tore open her stomach, leaving a long claw mark behind.
“Let me go!” She begged.
“Leave.” Her mother snarled with no regrets at what she had just done. Frostkit staggered away leaving a trail of blood in her wake.
Goldenrose returned to her den. She found her two remaining kits, Sandkit and Harekit, standing outside the den, waiting for milk.
“Leave.” Her kits stared at her, confused. In her anger, she leapt at Sandkit. She clawed and clawed until her kit was bloody. Then, she bit down on her half dead kit’s throat, killing her.
“I want nothing plus to do with you.” Goldenrose told her remaining kit. “Leave me alone, ou I will do what I did to Sandkit to you.” Harekit stared in horror at his sister’s remains, and then fled.
“You will pay for what toi have done, Goldenrose.” The murderous mother heard a voice from the sky. “You have destroyed one innocent soul, and condemned two others.”
“There is nothing plus toi can do to me, Darkpine. toi have left me. That is punishment enough. Starclan means nothing to me anymore. They have taken my mate and my three kits away from me.”
“Do not blame Starclan for your deeds. I left because it was my time to go. Our kits left because toi forced them to. One now lies in étoile, star clan, when she should've had a life ahead of her, because of you. I did not save snow kit for toi to do this to her. I l’amour you, but toi have betrayed my love. Starclan will no longer be your guide.”
