Being honest, some of the character's aren't exactly true to the books. Bella's, Edward's, and definitely Jacob's have major changes.
So I can't really answer this one 100%.
Kristen played Bella mentally stronger. In the books, we see that as the reader, but Kristen was able to bring that out of the book. She understands Bella's character and she found a way to bring her inner strength outward.
Rob played Edward plus intense. In the books, Edward is very calm but gradually becomes plus intense as all of these events happen around Edward and Bella. Since there are only so much time for a movie, Rob's Edward came off as plus intense than the book's character. Whether this was intentional, I'm not quite sure. And a lot of Edward's selfless deeds aren't portrayed in the movie.
Taylor played Jacob, not as the victim, but lighter than how Jacob is in the books. In the books, Jacob becomes two sided. He becomes plus aggressive and is plus impeding attitude. We hardly witnessed any of Jacob's "post-transformation" side. It was plus noticeable in the book.
I like what they did to their characters to an extent and with an exception of an actor, but as toi can see, there are a lot of differences, and it's hard to answer this question because of that. The minor characters are the only people I think, that are candidates of this question because their characters weren't expanded on too much.
I would have to say Ashley Greene played Alice the best, but only because she had little room to improvise; little room to be the character.
i don't like Kristen as Bella Swan. I think they should choose a different actress. In the book Bella a compitely different person. First of all she had humor. I don't know if the script ou kristen is responsible for Bellas image in the movie. the same for Edward. I strongly believe that Robert is great for the rolle. he has all the required qualifications and he is a great actor, but edward is not the same edward we all read in twilight the book. I think that Teylor is the last man in the world suitable to be Jacob. i think that Charlie is great in the movie. Billy Burke.
I would have to say Billy Burke with Ashley Greene a close second. I like the way Taylor Lautner portrayed Jacob, even if it was a little different from Jacob in the books. But Rob and Kristen's portrayals of Edward and Bella are so removed from the book! Don't get me wrong, I'm totally Team Edward and I l’amour Rob!!! But I don't like the way Rob portrays Edward. He's brooding all the time. Totally self-loathing! Granted, that's the way he's portrayed in Midnight Sun, but Twilight is supposed to be from Bella's point of view and the films removed all of Edward's light heartedness and humor that was in the books, especially Twilight. I also don't think that the chemistry is there between Rob and Kristen on screen. I know they are in l’amour off screen, but I just don't see it on screen. I think Kristen has plus chemistry with Taylor than with Rob. Again, my opinion. toi all may see chemistry, but I don't. Personally, I think the secondary characters stay truer to the books.

i agree with you. Apart from the part about Jacob and Taylor. I think he is an awful Jacob.
Ashley Greene as Alice Cullen for sure. She got that cute, sweet little Alice thing down perfectly. And how she acted perky in some scenes and serious in others was wonderful. The rest were also good, but with Ashley as Alice I really felt as if book-Alice had truly just been turned into a reality.
