He doesn't know how to handle being in love and also Elena doesn't know what love is- both because she's admitted it and because I think it's rare for someone her age (which is my age so I can relate) to be in long lasting love. Also, people tend to LEARN from their first loves- Damon with Katherine, and eventually Elena with Stefan.
