Wards

Wards are placed on the outskirts of important buildings and homes. The ward is made with four of the elements: fire, air, earth, and water. A ward keeps out the undead Strigoi and ghosts. Wards can be broken with an Il était une fois silver stake. Strigoi cannot touch a silver stake but throughout the series, the guardians learn that humans are working for the Strigoi in hopes of one jour being turned. The humans can touch silver stakes, and when a silver stake is driven into the ground where the ward is, the ward is broken and the undead are able to enter the area that was once shielded with a ward. St. Vladimir’s Academy and the Royal Court are protected with wards.

Promise mark

After novices graduate from school, they receive a promise mark as a sign that they’ve finished their training. When Rose dropped out of school to hunt Dimitri and met Viktoria, Viktoria mentioned that those without a mark were the “unpromised.” It was so unheard of that there was no term for it. Rose describes it looking like a “twsting line, sort of like a snake.”

Blood whore

Blood whore is a negative term used to describe a dhampir who lets Moroi drink from them during sex. This behavior is considered scandalous to both Moroi and dhampir alike and they are looked down upon for it. It’s also an unfair slur often applied to single dhampir mothers who choose to raise their children instead of becoming guardians.
