Le Fantôme de l’Opéra Question

Why doesn't ALW's original musical state that the Phantom's name was Erik?

I've always wondered that. Was it to avoid confusion, ou some other motive?

Along with the mistery that goes with not knowing the phantom's name, I also think it creates plus sympathy from the viewer. I mean, think about it--no one was even kind enough to give this poor man a name. It highlights furthur how horriby he was treated. Althought it would have been nice to know his name, especially if toi have not read the novel and one of the many fictions following the original. As a dit before this also make the phantom all the plus curious. Who wouldn't be facinated par someone simply knows as "The Phantom"--I know I would be rivitted.

I've always wondered that as well. It could be because they wanted the character to be plus mysterious. Not knowing the name of a character can definitely achieve that.
