Chapter 9: Confusion.
“Kid!” Paul exclaimed, waving at Renesmee, the feu shining off of his bright white teeth. She narrowed her eyes in at him, ignoring the laughs from the other wolves. Jacob chuckled suivant to her, pulling her closer to his side.
Renesmee looked around at the great fire, 18 loups scattered along the edges.
Seth hopped up from beside Leah and Carson and gave Renesmee a big hug, squeezing her tight.
“You stink Ness,” He grinned as she swatted at him. Of course the smell didn't really bother Seth, it never had in the first place.
Jacob pulled her towards the fire, sitting them down suivant to Sam and Quil. Quil grinned at her, reaching his hand out to give her a high five.
The feu crackled, conversation rolling around them. Leah was half asleep on Carson, her eyes drooping closed.
“How's Embry?” Sam asked, the conversation around them stopping dead. Jacob sighed, tightening his arm around Renesmee.
“He's doing okay, his ribs are almost completely healed and his arm is good. Carlisle is doing a good job as usual,” Jacob sighed and continued on,
“The cut on his neck is good too. It's almost completely gone,” Jared growled from across the fire, the flames dancing in front of Renesmee.
“I don't know how they got onto our land without us noticing. Me and Collin were out doing patrols the whole damn night and I didn't hear a thing. They must have snuck up on him down here somehow,” Jared sighed and ground his teeth together, a sound everyone could clearly hear.
“When toi got down here were they still here?” Sam asked, firing the question at Jacob. Everyone in the pack was now completely alert.
“No. I found Embry down here and when I looked around I didn't see anybody. Their trails disappeared too. Rain,” he explained, his deep voice terse.
Sam nodded, his eyes worried.
“You would think they would have realized what we were, long enough not to attack,” he murmured. Jacob nodded, leaning his head on haut, retour au début of Renesmee’s.
Payson cleared her throat, shaking her blonde hair out of her face.
“I was near on patrol when I heard Embry. I couldn't get to him fast enough, but I heard toi Jake, and I took off after the other wolves. They kept going, sprinting all the way out down to Forks, past Bella's old house, and I didn't think I could pursue any further without back up,” she mumbled.
“Did toi get a good look at any of them?” Jacob's Alpha voice had picked up.
“Kinda. There weird Jake,” She shuddered, leaning back into the log she was sitting by.
Jacob opened his mouth to speak but before he could, he ripped himself out of Renesmee’s arms, shivers rolling down his long spine. The other loups sprang up too, all of their bodies rippling with anger. Renesmee watched as Jacob exploded forward, out of his human body and into the giant russet coloured wolf. The others shot vers l'avant, vers l’avant too, some changing quicker than others. Jacob moved forward, Paul and Seth flanking behind him, and then Jared and Quil.
“What's wrong?” Renesmee cried, her high voice piercing the night air. Jacob growled, tossing his head towards a rock. He wanted her to hide. Had it been any other person telling her what to do then she wouldn't have listened. But this was her Jacob, and there was obviously something wrong.
Renesmee glided over towards a set of giant rocks, crouching behind them, but peeking out towards Jacob. His breathe was coming quick and she could see that the other loups were jumpy, their eyes searching madly for something she hadn't picked up on... And then Renesmee saw them. Fifteen broad wolves, coming from the other side of the plage from the long line of trees. They were all the same colour, a brilliant bright white, except for the loup in the front. He was a shade of dark glossy black, the darkest loup she had ever seen.
The loups tensed, growling. Jacob growled, breaking the silence. The opposite pack stopped, the black loup cocking his head. He bared his teeth at Jacob. From here Renesmee could see that the black loup was shaking, his fourrure trembling all along his body. That's when she realized with a gasp, he was phasing. Renesmee watched as the fourrure burst away from him, his human skin quickly replacing it. Her stomach was knotted in fear.
The human in front of her was no less than beautiful. His skin was dark, like Jacob's and she could see from here that his eyes were an odd silver. His hair was black and fell beautifully to one side. He was tall and his muscles rippled under his skin, his body trembling.
“I am Blake,” he said, his hands clenching into fists. Jacob growled, taking a single step forward. A white loup from the other side, most likely the Beta, took a step forward. A fierce snarl ripped from his jaws, a warning to Jacob. Jacob didn't déplacer back.
“You must be the other wolves. You're not doing your job so we have come to do it. There are too many leeches in this area. We came here the other night, and I caught the scent of what seemed like a human, but it wasn't,” Renesmee automatically knew who he was talking about.... Me.
She focused on controlling her breathing, quieting it down. A slow wind blew across the plage scattering her hair, but it was not strong enough to take her scent to the odd black wolf.
“We came across one of your wolves, and he tried to stop us, so we took him down,” One of our loups snarled. She realized it was Paul, recognizing his silvery hair.
“And now we have returned to kill them, with ou without your help,” All at once our pack seemed to snarl, deep growls rumbling in their chests. Jacob sprung forward, towards Blake, and Renesmee cupped her hand over her mouth, protecting her scream. Blake shivered and exploded forward, a giant black loup taking his place. Jacob lunged at him and Renesmee watched as the rest of the pack shot forward. Her eyes were only for her Jacob though. Blake was bigger, though only slightly. He snapped at Jacob, his eyes wild. Jacob snarled and lunged at him, knocking him over for only a few seconds. A giant white loup lunged at Jacob, distracting him.
“No!” Renesmee screamed. No one seemed to notice her. She lunged out from behind the rock, flying at Blake. He looked at Jacob, getting ready to lunge. As he did she threw herself at him, knocking into him with such a force that they were both thrown to the ground. The black loup snapped at her, barely missing. Jacob whined, knocking the white loup unconscious. The big black loup towered over her, baring his teeth. She looked at him, her eyes connecting with his. His silver eyes narrowed, and then widened, a sense of wonder ripping through them.
“No!” she heard a human voice yell. Jacob's. Renesmee turned to see him standing there, his eyes wide. The black loup looked at her and then at Jacob, slowly backing away. The other white loups looked at him, all of their eyes astounded. They too began backing away, following their leader into the woods.
Renesmee dropped to the ground, her body shaking.
“Nessie!” Jacob yelled, his voice torn. Her arm was bleeding, the perfect pale skin slightly torn. Jacob dropped down suivant to her and she was barely aware of the other loups phasing back into their regular bodies around her.
“I told toi to stay hidden!” he yelled, his voice wide with panic. She looked into his deep black eyes, so full of fear,
“I couldn't. He was about to kill you,” she whispered.
“Jacob what happened?” Sam said, crouching down suivant to her. She was vaguely aware of Seth and Paul hovering near too.
“We have a problem Sam,” Jacob whispered.
“What is it?” Jared said, stepping forward. Jacob's eyes looked like the bottom of a grave as Renesmee looked at him.
“Blake, their leader,” he swallowed, tears swelling in his eyes,
“He Imprinted with Nessie,”
All around her she heard the gasps, and then, there was darkness.
