I really think Cas was already edging over into power-craziness before he even absorbed the souls. He refused to even admit to Balthazar that what he was doing was risky. No, his head was definitely already swollen. If the boys had supported him, he would have taken it as a sign that he was even more justified to usurp this power and keep it for himself.

His problem is that he thinks he's better than them.

He was driven to what he became, convinced of his own superiority, wanting to equate himself with God.

SG1-090 picked No...Castiel would've gave up the souls after he was done:
No. I don't think he was already "convinced of his own superiority" before the soul absorbtion. I think he was just desperate and wanted to try and convince himself that nothing would go wrong.

But the bottom line is that, while I hate to admit it, the Winchester's have treated Cas like shit. He felt betrayed and then he suddenly goes through this mind altering power trip. I don't really blame his character to be honest.

If they had supported and trusted him I think they would have truely managed to get through to him and get him to give up the power.

I hope in the next season he's some how able to get back to being good ol' Castiel again.
