He refused to even admit to Balthazar that what he was doing was risky. No, his head was definitely already swollen. I think he was just desperate and wanted to try and convince himself that nothing would go wrong. But the bottom line is that, while I hate to admit it, the Winchester's have treated Cas like shit. He felt betrayed and then he suddenly goes through this mind altering power trip. I don't really blame his character to be honest. If they had supported and trusted him I think they would have truely managed to get through to him and get him to give up the power.
