8.01:Out of the Dark Part 1
Picking up a week after the end of season 7, Sam teams up with Garth and Sheriff Mills to find a way to save Dean and Castiel, who are still stuck in Purgatory. Meanwhile, Dean encounters fallen foes such as Eve, Amy, and Azazel. While Castiel encounters Balthazar, who is also in Purgatory, and not happy about Castiel killing him. In the end, Dean encounters a familar face, who saves him from the monsters.

8.02:Out of the Dark Part 2
Dean and Bobby attempt to help Cas but are attacked by Dick Roman in the process, who plans to make both of them cease to exist. Meanwhile, Sam, Sheriff Mills, and Garth attempt to contact Death, only to find Crowley has already convinced him that the Winchesters have caused too much trouble. In the end,
Death secretly agrees to help Sam, due to his dislike for Crowley outweighing his annoyance with the Winchesters. At the end of the episode, Dean, Castiel, and Bobby's ghost are pulled out of Purgatory by Death.

Kevin has a vision warning him something horrible is going to happen, and attempts to escape Crowley's clutches. Meg, who was being held with him, agrees to aid him in escaping. In the end, Crowley foils their escape attempt, and forces Kevin to tell him what is going to happen, which is not shown.

On Halloween, Sam and Dean investigate a town where strange creatures begin stealing organs from people during the night. Sam discovers the monsters are a type of monster hybrid that are seeking to re-open the door to Purgatory.

Sam and Dean investigate when multiple copies of the same person begin attacking citizens in a backwoods community. They soon realize the culprit is a man whose limbs regenerate when cut off, and the ones cut off grow into clones.

Sam and Dean investigate a series of murders in Alaska that may be the work of the abombinable snowman. But find the real creature is a monster that lives under the ice.

Castiel's insanity mysteriously vanishes, causing Sam, Dean, and Bobby to wonder what's truly going on. Everything ties together in a shocking conclusion.

In the end, Crowley's master plan is revealed, to let loose Michael from the Cage as he has grown tired of the Winchester's interference. In the end, he binds Death and forces him to open the cage. However, Dean shoots Crowley with the Colt in the process, while Sam decapitates the Alpha Vampire, presumably killing them both.
