For three years, Sam and Dean Winchester had fought ghosts, demons, witches, werewolves, and vampires. Then a new creature arrived on the scene: Castiel, an Angel of the Lord.
Castiel (or Cas, as Dean affectionately calls him) was the one who “gripped [Dean] tight and raised him from perdition” after Dean went to hell. Since Cas is an Angel with an ultrasonic voice and a form like a bright flash of lightning the size of the Chrysler Building, Cas used the body of family man Jimmy Novak as his vessel so that he could interact with humans without burning their eyes ou breaking their eardrums.
Cas is an Angel first of all. He regards all other anges as his brothers and sisters and mourns when one of them dies ou turns evil. But Cas is not the self-righteous being of light that he seems to be at first. He believes in following the orders of his superiors, but he knows the difference between right and wrong. Thanks to Dean’s influence, Cas learned to rebel against questionable orders, and he became the Winchesters’ most valuable ally and friend.
Because of this, Cas fell and became human. Throughout most of season five, Cas retained many of his Angel powers, including flight and teleportation, but not his healing powers. He was a fugitive from heaven. After Cas helped Sam and Dean trick one archangel and kill another high-ranking Angel who were trying to destroy the planet, Cas was stripped of the Angel grace that gave him his power and became completely human.
It’s interesting to note that Cas, as an angel, held a certain level of contempt for humanity, largely because of man’s conceit and pompousness and lack of faith; yet Dean, one of the most faithless, conceited and self-loving of all humans, is Cas’ best friend on Earth, and possibly Cas’ best friend ever. In a way, Cas almost seems to idolize Dean, mimicking Dean’s vocabulary, mannerisms, and even his butch hairstyle at one point. Eventually, Cas almost began to blend in with humans.
Then, somehow, at the end of season five, Cas was reinstated as a full angel, and a leader in heaven. Now he is engaged in the middle of a civil war in heaven, fighting against his beloved brothers and sisters who hate mankind, while at the same time trying to keep heaven’s weapons from being turned loose on an unsuspecting planet.
But Cas has never forgotten his human friends. He doesn’t come to Sam and Dean’s aid every time they call; but if they need his help, and only he can help, he does come to their aid.
I’ve heard some people say that Cas is just a dick, like all the other anges on Supernatural. Well… maybe in his first few episodes he was. But when we learn plus about Cas, discover that he has feelings and doubts and that he’s not just a mindless toy robot following orders, it’s hard not to l’amour him. He’s really not all that different from us. He truly is an Earth angel.
