I think it's because when the video game came out, they didn't want to make the characters too detailed (considering the quality of video games back whenever Sonic was created) so they needed to make some stuff, toi know, less detailed and simple.

i never think of that i thought they wear them bc they don't want ppl 2 c they real hands
i think it's because they want to pick up items without getting anything on them,or they might need them when holding rough objects that could make them drop it ou make them get cut
