Really strange predicament here: How do toi not sound cold when comforting somebody about the death of a pet toi didn't get along with... when the pet is a goat

I'm pretty sure no one else has expierence in this, but what the heck I need help. My mom came in this evening crying because she'd found her pet goat dead, the goat and I haven't been on the best of terms lately because I found him kind of stinky yet I do feel bad for my mother. Whenever I try to think of what I should say it seems cold and mean. I don't think it helped that I was lire a novel about death when she walked in.
