There\'s always an element of risk involved in producing a major TV set-piece – but usually it\'s a danger of over-running, of going over-budget. Occasionally, though, an actor\'s life ends up in real danger...
These are some of the close-calls, TV moments that – for all the health and safety precautions involved – almost killed the actors involved.
Aaron Paul was almost killed by a rogue rock on the set of
Fate stepped in when, during a particularly windy shoot, Paul asked if he could shoot his scene in a different spot.
Shortly after he moved, a gust of wind lifted a tarp being held down by a massive rock, which promptly dropped where Paul had been standing. If he hadn\'t been allowed to move, he would\'ve been killed. Which is why you should always listen to your actors...
Blame method acting for this one – a combination of swapping out a prop knife for a real one, and Matthew Fox refusing to wear a safety vest before shooting the scene because it didn\'t look right.
in which Jack and Locke fight on a clifftop, and it swiftly took a turn for the very serious. No-one realised that they\'d forgotten to swap the prop knife back in, and Fox was stabbed for real.
Luckily he lived, and was able to make it to heaven... for the episode\'s final sequence.
Bob Denver, a.k.a Gilligan, was probably pretty excited about getting to work with a
on his sitcom, for a scene that saw him running into a tent away from the beastie.
Thankfully, it was wrestled to the ground before it could do any purr-manent (sorry!) damage.
When the gang were filming \'The Cincinnati Kids\', a key sequence involved the actors being filmed by a camera strapped to a rollercoaster. Robert Reed insisted on a test-run, which held up production and probably annoyed a whole bunch of people.
But annoyance turned to relief when the camera flew off the ride - it would have killed anyone in its path if the scene had been shot straight away.
While we don\'t know exactly which specific scene almost killed Purcell, we can narrow it down. It happened during the Morocco shoot (which was doubling for war-torn Yemen), and it was during the filming of the fifth season of
Other than that, details are skant - but we can understand 20th Century Fox\'s desire not to go in-depth on revealing how a part of the set broke off and smashed into Purcell\'s skull.
"Had a little accident on set," Purcell said on social media. "Pays to have a thick skull when an iron bar falls on your head!! Busting it open severely, also broke my nose in two places… and a hundred stitches in my head… Stoked to be alive. All good… Doc said I have an unusually tough tissue fiber that\'s what saved me apparently."
. Perhaps as karma for making half the audience almost drop dead with desire whenever he takes his shirt off, Aidan Turner almost died for real shooting the moment where he lifts Eleanor Tomlinson out of a seafaring vessel.
"We were filming me lifting Demelza out of a boat in the actual sea when this huge wave picked up the boat and slammed it into my head," he said.
"I dropped her in the water - not very Ross Poldark... And nobody was coming to see if I\'m OK. I was the man injured... There\'s nothing like the Cornish sea at the height of winter for putting you in your place."
All jokes aside, the moment could have been deadly - and a cameraman suffered a concussion in the incident.
