As the first jour of school continued on, Paul still felt alone. At lunch time, he sat with his friends, but their company did not help. He came to the realization that this was the first an he did not wish Hank luck for the football tryouts. This made Paul feel very sad. He thought about going up to Hank to talk to him, but Hank was sitting with his friends. Paul knew they'd beat him up. After lunch, Paul went to his locker. A few minutes later, he heard a commotion. It sounded like Hank, and he seemed to be in distress. Paul had to see what was wrong. The three bullies from earlier were taunting Hank. They were trying to block him from going to the football tryouts. Hank told them, "Listen. I don't want any trouble. I'm just trying to go to the football tryouts." The first boy said, "Sorry, Hank. toi aren't going nowhere." Hank said, "That's anywhere, dirt bag." The bullies retaliated par saying exactly what Hank said, but in a mocking tone. Paul began to feel a twinge of anger. The first boy then said, "If toi think a nerd like toi can make the football team, you've got another think coming." The other boys a dit in unison, "Yeah!" With that, they pushed Hank down. Paul had seen enough. He rushed over and shouted, "Get away from my brother, toi bastards!" The first boy said, "Well, well, if it isn't that hippie we heard about." The seconde boy said, "Let's get him. It'll be easier to beat him up." Paul said, "You want a piece of me? Come and get it!" Hank cried, "Paul! No!" The first boy punched Paul in the face and then pushed him down. Even though the bullies were beating on him, Paul refused to surrender to them. He fought back. The first boy said, "Beg for your life!" Paul retorted, "There's no way I'd ever beg to a bastard like you!" The seconde boy said, "Forget it, boss! He's not going to give in." Paul got up and said, "That's right. I'm not, because I don't know when to quit!" The bullies ran away in fear. Hank said, "That was intense. Are toi okay, Paul?" Paul said, "I'm fine. Are toi okay?" Hank said, "You're the one who's bruised and bleeding." Paul said, "I injured their pride. They'll never recover from that. My injuries will heal in a week." Hank said, "Let me take toi to the nurse's office." Paul said, "It's okay, Hank. I'll go myself." Hank said, "But it's my fault you're hurt." Paul said, "But aren't toi going to the football tryouts?" Hank said, "They're having those all day. I'll go after I take toi to the nurse's office." Paul said, "Okay." As the brothers walked to the nurse's office, Paul thought, Mother is right. Hank does still l’amour me. The nurse cleaned Paul's wounds and patched them up. She then sent him accueil to rest. Before his mother picked him up, he said, "Good luck at the football tryouts." Hank said, "Thanks, brother. We'll talk plus when I get home. I think we have a lot to talk about." Paul said, "Yes, we do." With that, Paul went accueil and slept like he hadn't slept in years.
After Everett received his discharge papers and his crutches, Una asked him, "Are toi hungry?" He said, "Yes, very." She said, "Okay. We'll get something to eat, then I'll take toi home." After they ate dîner at a burger joint, they went back to Everett's apartment. Una decided to stay with Everett so that she could help him with whatever he needed. Mrs. Stratton approved of Una's decision. Everett's knee healed in a few days. After that, he and Una decided that they would start planning their wedding. It is a jour that they are both looking vers l'avant, vers l’avant to.
