No Stable Place
Aside from Uncle Bob, the only other family members who paid me any mind were my grandparents. My grandfather passed away about a an and a half after my father's untimely death. My grandmother lived until I started high school. When she was alive, I could always go to her with a problem. Every time I would have a bad jour at school, I would go to her. She would say, "Tell me what's wrong, John." I would tell her what was wrong, and she would make everything better. When she passed away when I started high school, I was devastated. Now I had no one to go to when I had a bad day. That's when my record listening became plus frequent. Other than my dog, Beatle, it was my only source of comfort. I really missed having a person to talk to. I missed having someone who listened to me. When he wasn't working, I could call Uncle Bob and talk to him, but it wasn't the same. Grandma seemed to have an answer for everything. Nobody else seemed to have that gift.
Moving to Tennessee was bittersweet for me. I was closer to family members, but it was also a big adjustment. I lived in Illinois for the first twelve years of my life. When I started school, I tried to make some friends. A group of kids invited me to sit with them during lunch. "Hooray! New friends!" I thought to myself. I introduced myself. I talked about being from Illinois. To my surprise, they did not make fun of my accent. One of them explained, "You have that there Midwestern accent. It's the accent that doesn't offend nobody. That's why most of them newscasters are Midwestern." I said,...

When I had entered the fifth grade, I was dreading it. I had heard rumors that the teacher was really mean. When I met her before school started, she seemed really nice. On the first jour of school, I was wearing one of my Beatles t-shirts. She noticed it, and she said, "Darling, I l’amour toi already!" I said, "Okay, then." She would take up for me all the time. The other kids often called me glasses. She heard them and said, "She has a name, guys. Her name is not glasses. It's Winter." There was one jour when another girl kept picking on me. I finally had enough and said, "I might look sweet and innocent, but that shit is for suckers, and I'm no lollipop." I looked at the teacher. She winked and said, "I heard nothing." I would have had her for the sixth grade, too, but unfortunately, I moved to Tennessee as soon as the school an was over. We both cried. We promised to keep in touch with each other, and we've kept in touch to this day.

When I got a little older, the mean nicknames started to fly. In the third grade, I got called chicken legs a lot. I don't know why. Chickens don't have long legs like mine, the last time I checked. Every time I'd walk through the hallways, someone would shout, "There goes chicken legs." I would remind them, "My name is not chicken legs. It's Winter." par the time spring came, I was so tired of being called chicken legs. One day, one of my classmates said, "Hey, chicken legs!" I said, "That's better than what toi are." He said, "Oh, really? What am I?" I said, "You're a horse's ass." He didn't...

I was once asked, "If toi could compare yourself to a literary character, who do toi think you'd be?" I a dit that I see myself as the Ugly Duckling. I started out as a complete outcast, and I blossomed into a beautiful swan. This is a metaphor, of course. This is how my story goes. I was raised par my aunt and uncle. I never really knew my parents, as I Lost them at a young age. I was lucky that they took me in. If not for them, I would have been dumped in a orphanage. I knew that they loved me, but getting everyone else to like me was harder. The other kids picked on me all the time. I don't...

Today was the last full jour of school. We had our annual awards ceremony today. Some of my Friends got awards for highest average in certain subjects. I didn't expect to get one. I wouldn't have minded if I didn't. But I did! I got the Model Citizen Award. Apparently, many of my fellow students a dit some good things about me. After school, I told John about it. He wanted to come, but he was out of town preparing for a concert with his band. He said, "I'm happy for you, Grace! toi deserve it." I said, "Really?" He said, "Yes, really. When I picked toi up from school, I met some of...

Today was Good Friday. We got a jour off from school. I was walking down the rue with John, and I saw Kimberly, the girl who betrayed me. I kept my head down, hoping she wouldn't notice me, but she did. She said, "Hey, Grace!" I said, "Hey, Judas!" John said, "Oh, so, that's the girl who stabbed toi in the back." I nodded. She said, "You're not still sore at me, are you, Grace?" I said, "I forgive, but I never forget." Suddenly, John stuck it to her. He said, "How dare toi do this thing to Grace! She had been nothing but nice to her, and toi took her cœur, coeur and ripped it into...

I'm all better now. I can speak clearly. I am caught up with my school work. I talked with John today. He said, "I'm glad you're feeling better. I'm actually sick myself." I said, "Oh, no! What's wrong?" He said, "It's just a cold. I'm sure I'll be fine in a few days." I said, "I hope toi feel better." He said, "Thank you. The worst part is not being able to go to the recording studio with my mates. I hate that I can't do that. They told me that they won't go if I don't. I said, 'No, it's fine. I'll introduce my songs when I come back.' Allen said, 'Take care of yourself, John....

I am sick again. This time, I have laryngitis. I cannot talk at all. I can only communicate through text messages. John came par the house. My aunt told him that I was sick. He came into my bedroom. I was excited to see him, and I tried to talk with him, but I couldn't get any words out. He said, "You don't have to talk, Grace. Just listen." I sat up. He said, "I brought toi a little present." He reached in his bag and handed me a teddy bear. He said, "My grandmother made if for me when I was five years old." I texted, "John, I can't take this. It's something your grandmother made...

I am so happy that our house has been rebuilt. We settled in just a few weeks ago. Things have been crazy, which explains why I haven't written anything in a while. They've calmed down, thankfully. I am thirteen now. Today was my thirteenth birthday. It was so much better than my twelfth birthday. There was really only one bad part about my birthday. I was browsing the Internet, and I read that Peter from The Devil Wants Peace was in a car crash. I called John to see if it was true ou if it was just a nasty rumor. I said, "John, I read that Peter was in a car crash. Is it true?"...

We are now in a new year. School started again today. My schoolmates have been flocking to me, asking me questions about losing my accueil in a fire. It became a game of a thousand questions. The one question that most of them didn't ask: Are toi okay? I became fed up with it. Michael later found me sitting in the lunchroom alone. He said, "Hey. Are toi okay?" I said, "You know, you're the only the third person to ask me that." He said, "Really?" I said, "Yeah. I had to get away from all the questions. It was a terrifying experience." He said, "I can imagine. toi got burnt pretty...

Even though it is Christmas, things have not exactly been jolly for us. A few weeks ago, our Christmas lights had burned our house down. My aunt and uncle escaped unharmed, but I got trapped. I saw a firefighter coming to my rescue, and before I fell unconscious, I said, "Please help me." When I woke up, I was in the hospital. The doctor said, "It's good that you're awake now." I asked if my aunt and uncle were okay. The doctor said, "They're fine. They're in the waiting room right now. toi gave them quite a scare, young lady." I said, "I'm not going to die, am I?" He said,...

Today was Thanksgiving, (for the United States). Thanksgiving has always been my favori holiday. It is a time to get together with the family without the pressure of buying gifts for them, and I like food. I helped a bit with preparing the dinner, but I mostly set the table. Grandma didn't want me to burn myself. It's happened in the past. Anyway, John managed to find his way. Whenever we would sit at the table, we would all say what we are thankful for before eating the food. We allowed John to go first, since he was new to the family. He said, "I'm thankful for my band...

I've been having quite a weekend so far. Yesterday, after school, my aunt and uncle noticed that I was still feeling a little down. They decided to take me to a hiking trail, since I enjoy nature. Everything was going well, but suddenly, I got separated from them par mistake. I tried to go back the way I came, but there were so many twists and turns, and I became increasingly confused. Pretty soon, I came across a log cabin. I a dit to myself, "I wonder if anyone lives there. Maybe I can get some help." I knocked on the door, but the only answer was a barking dog. I decided to...

Today at school, I had my worst jour yet. I was on my way to my last class, and I overheard Kimberly talking to one of her friends. Her friend said, "I don't understand why you're Friends with Grace. She's just, I don't know, so dorky." I didn't like that, but I kept quiet to see where it was going. Kimberly said, "I'm not Friends with Grace, Isabella!" My eyes widened. She wasn't Friends with me? Was she denying our friendship out of fear? Isabella said, "I've seen toi with her, doing the friendly banter. toi two do your homework together." Kimberly said, "Okay, here's the thing....

Ever since I saved Freddy's life, my schoolmates have looked at me differently. They actually respect me now. I like that I've gained respect, but I never wanted to be popular. I enjoy being around people, but I hate being the center of attention. It's awful. The populaire girls even look my way now. We don't have a lot in common, but one of them seems nice enough. Her name is Kimberly. However, there might be a problem with her and my other friends, particularly Bridget. Bridget a dit to me today, "Grace, it's good that you're nice and friendly to everyone, but I'd watch my back...

Today at school, I had an experience I will never forget. I had just finished my lunch, and I went to throw something away. Suddenly, I heard someone shouting, "Somebody, help! My friend is choking!" I rushed to the scene. One of the kids looked up at me desperately and said, "I don't know what to do." I said, "But I do!" As I a dit that, I gave his friend a sharp blow between the shoulders. The boy was able to cough it up forcefully. Once he could talk again, he said, "Thank you." I said, "You're welcome. Are toi okay?" He said, "Yeah." Later, I was getting ready to head home....

I am feeling much better today. I don't feel great, but I feel much better than I did a few days ago. I was able to go to school today. Michael, Sabrina, and Bridget helped me get caught up in my classes. I'm lucky to have such good friends. Of course, I did feel a bit tired after finishing my homework. I took a nap for a while. When I woke up, it was almost 6:00 pm. I didn't realize I had slept that long. When dîner time came, I ate really well. I didn't feel like eating much for the past couple of days. My appetite has returned. I think I will go to lit early tonight. I'm feeling pretty tired right now. I'm not completely better, but I'm close to it.

I missed school today, because I am sick. I picked up an upper respiratory infection as a result of my allergies to ragweed. It's the only thing I'm allergic to. Of course, of all things to be allergic to, I had to be allergic to something that's hard to avoid. I mean, ragweed pollen blooms in late August and spreads around from early September to the middle of November. How does one avoid that? Anyway, I started feeling bad yesterday, and last night, my aunt took me to the emergency room, because I had a terrible cough and sounded extremely hoarse. She said, "You could've...

Today was the first jour of school. It was not a good day, ou maybe it was, depending on how one looks at it. I got beat up, but I am glad that I took a beating for someone else. What happened was this. I saw some girls bullying the new girl. I walked up to the bullies and said, "Stop it! Why are toi being so mean? What did this girl ever do to you?" The ring leader said, "Stay out of this, Grace! This doesn't concern you!" I said, "On the contrary, I think it does." Another one of the girls said, "She says she has Autism ou some kind of enlightenment crap." I said, "That's no...

I saw The Devil Wants Peace in concert tonight. It was just as amazing as I imagined. My favori moment in the concert was when they played "Hatred Will Get toi Nowhere." I really like what John a dit about the song. He said, "This song is called 'Hatred Will Get toi Nowhere.' I wrote this song along with Allen, Peter, and Stan. After we recorded the song, Peter a dit to me, 'It's a shame that we kill off our Heroes and allow the evils of the world to enter.' I said, 'I agree with you, Peter.' He said, 'I'm no bloody genius. I never made anything above a B, but I think the world's...
