In the early era of Fall Out Boy, Patrick would just wear them because he was covering a bald spot on the haut, retour au début of his head (no one really knows why he had this). It was somewhat a huge cycle, Patrick would wear the hat which causes that bald spot, so he would wear a hat to cover the bald spot and so on. The bald spot is now gone I'm pretty sure, now he just wears them for aesthetic purposes.
