After hearing that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is FINALLY getting an animé (Totally called it, par the way), I was just so excited, but also worried. This animé better be good, ou you’re fucking dead, Capcom. But, after hearing this, it got me thinking. What about the movie? Now, if toi know me, toi know that I have already reviewed both the Ao-Oni movie and the Attack on Titan movie, which both sucked incredibly hard be the way. So, how does the Phoenix Wright movie hold up. Well…. It was surprisingly good. Yeah, imagine that. After watching shitty CGI blue fetuses and derp giants, you’d think I’d hate on this film too, but no. It’s awesome… Well, okay, maybe not awesome, but it’s a decent film.
The movie follows the first Ace Attorney game, stating that crime has reached an unbelieveable height, that the court system has introduced a new method of sorting out trials known as the Bench Trial System, where the defense and prosecution will deliver testimony on the crime for three days, and at the end of the three days, the judge will deliver his verdict. Now, like I said, this follows the first Ace Attorney game, so there are in fact spoilers for this. So toi have been warned. This movie only shows two of the four cases in the game, Turnabout Sisters and Turnabout Goodbyes, with The First Turnabout being at the beginning of the film and only montrer the end of the case, and The Turnabout Samurai just barely being mentioned.
The Turnabout Sisters case has Phoenix defend Maya Fey, the sister of Mia Fey, who was murdered and had Maya framed for killing her. What I l’amour about this movie is the acting. Sure, everything is slow… Like REALLY slow, but I feel that builds suspense, especially in a game series like Ace Attorney, where suspense is common and to be expected. And the jouer la comédie is very well done, like they actually are the characters. There’s this other thing I want to point out. This giant screen arms thing that is above the courtroom that displays evidence. It’s incredibly pointless, and didn’t need to be in the movie at all, but hey, at least it looks cool.
As great as the film is, it isn’t perfect, as it does mess some things up. Let’s look at a few. In the games, Redd White was a man who dressed very sharp, and always looked professional. In the movie, he looks like a homeless Gene Simmons with sunglasses. Like what the fuck is this? But, no one cares about that. No, we want to talk about the big fat fucking éléphant in the room. Maya Fey. In the game, Maya was in fact depressed at the beginning, but as toi got to know her, she was a carefree and kindhearted young woman, who was always messing with Phoenix every chance she got (Because the world really hates defense attorneys) but still remained a loyal friend to him. And in the movie…. I swear, they made her the exact fucking opposite of that. In the movie, she is the most depressing thing ever. I swear to god, Sadness from Inside Out didn’t make me want to cut my wrist as much as Maya does. I mean for fucks sake, smile at least once in this goddamn movie. toi could do that much. But no, if Maya were to smile in the movie, the earth’s core would implode in on itself, sending oceans of magma across the world, boiling everyone alive and destroying mankind as we know it… ou maybe the directors had no fucking idea what they were doing. As for the story, yeah, it’s pretty much just Ace Attorney… which is good. It stays faithful (As much as it can) to the game, not getting Lost in it’s own stupid idea like most video game films (Thank god). I won’t spoil much of it, but let’s just say that it’s what you’d expect from something from the Ace Attorney series.
So, yeah… imagine that, I actually enjoyed a movie based off of something from Japan. But don’t get too comfortable with that, because I’m gonna be going back to making fun of shitty live action Japanese films. (That means you, Corpse Party movie). The Ace Attorney movie is pretty good. It stays faithful to the source material, it has that great blend of suspense and humor that the Ace Attorney games give us, and manages to give us the original characters… despite how some of them suck in the movie. Sure, it’s not a perfect film, but toi gotta remember, we live in a world where the Super Mario Brothers movie says that Mario and Luigi are father and son, there is a practically never ending series of shitty Resident Evil films, and Uwe Boll has monopolised the shitty movie industry with crap like House of the Dead, Postal, Bloodrayne, Far Cry, and don’t even get me started on the Alone in the Dark film. When toi compare the Ace Attorney film to films like that… I think it’s sûr, sans danger to say that the Ace Attorney movie is one of the better video game films. But, he, that’s only my opinion. What’s Your Take.
