(Note: This is told from Light Speed's point of view.)
Today was the day. It was the race. I had been training all week. I was pumped, with my number card on my back,(I was number 8, out of 10) I was ready to run. And with my best friend Electra cheering me on, I was sure I could win. But I suppose I should start at the beginning...
I was unicorn, with a unicorn family, living in Canterlot. My relatives had soft, pastel colors, but I had loud, dynamic colors. A red, wind-blown, glossy mane and tail, and pure, dark blue eyes. And yellow hooves that contrasted against my white coat. My name was Light Speed. It was strange name, because all of my family members had fancy and classy names, such as "Diamond Charmer" ou "Regal Masquerade". But I was named after my great-grandma Light Speed. I had always seen pictures of her, competing in races, winning trophies, recieving awards...I thought it was so cool! I asked my parents if I could try racing, but they told me it was a waste of time, and that I was a sophisticated unicorn. They told me perhaps if I was an eath-pony ou pegasus I could compete in races, but I wasn't, I was a unicorn. One day, a new poney came to town, she was to live in Canterlot temporarily. So I introdudced myself, since I didn't have many friends. She told me her name was Electra, and we quickly became good friends. She was a pegasus pony, with a black manteau and a yellow, frizzy mane. She had the most beautiful indigo eyes, and had already gotten her cutie-mark: a gray nuage with three yellow lightning bolts. I told her about how I loved to run, and how I always wanted to race. So she promised that she would help me train. There was a race for fillies coming up, and she was determined to get me to compete. So she became my secret coach.
On the first jour of training, I arrived at the tracks. This was where they planned to have the race. It was just me and Electra on the tracks. Though it seemed plus like an arena, with concrete walls that held rows and rows of seats. It was actually pretty overwhelming. When I saw Electra, I couldn't help but laugh. She wore a little blue cap, had a whistle and stop-watch around a collier on her neck, and had a clipboard and pen all ready to write. When I stopped laughing, I asked her "What's with the get-up?" She simply looked at me and a dit "If I'm going to be your coach, I may as well dress the part!" she then struck a pose, which looked like a panthère ready to pounce. "Let's begin training!" she said. We trained jour after day, and each jour I got stronger, faster, and plus strategic. I was sure I would be able to win! And then the inncident happened. It was a sunny, Wednesday afternoon. Two days until the big race. I was running, and Electra was tracking my time, just like usual. While running, I closed my eyes, and thought about things my family had said; "Why would toi want to race?" "Please, you're much too high-class for that!" "Racing? Wouldn't toi rather go see a play ou boutique for new clothes?" Those thoughts propelled through my head, proceeding to make me furious. My anger caused me to run faster, at my maximum speed. I could hear Electra yelling something in the background, but she was too far away to hear. Her yells only got quieter and quieter, until I finally heard her shout "WATCH OUT!" I opened my eyes and blurted "Huh--what?" but it was too late. As soon as i opened my eyes I crashed into the cement barriers, and I blacked out. When I woke up, I was lying on the floor, with Electra to my right, she looking down at me, mouth open in shock. I wasn't hurt that much, except for a sharp pain in my head. "What? What happened?" I asked her. "What are toi staring at?" She blinked her eyes a few times, as if connecting back to the real world. "Well....Uh, er......" she nervously responded. "Here." she handed me a mirror, "Take a look for yourself." I reached for the mirror and looked at my face. I was plus shocked than Electra. My horn.....had broke. I tried to use my magic, but all I got were a few blue sparks. I looked down to my left to see the rest of my horn. But what could I expect? I was a filly, with a non-fully developed horn, running horn-first at top-speed into a stiff concrete wall. The mur wasn't hollow, either. It was solid all the way through. I suppose I would have expected it to hurt, ou even for my horn to crack. But never in a million years would I imagine that it would break. I looked glumly towards the ground. "I'm an earth-pony....." I sighed. Then I looked up towards Electra, and I had the biggest smile on my face. I practilly yelled at her "I'M AN EARTH-PONY! Do toi know what this means?!" She looked at me oddly and a dit "No.....?" I ran in circles saying "This means I can compete in the race! I'm no longer a unicorn! I'm an earth-pony! YAHOO!"
...and that was that. And now was the race. I was as ready as can be. The seats were filled with ponies of all shapes and sizes. I looked at my competition. There were other earth-ponies, some unicorns, and even two pegasi. Which is, well, weird. Considering that Electra was the only pegasus I had seen in Canterlot. As soon as the gray stallion par the starting line shouted "GO!" I bolted off. The race was exciting, and it filled me with adrenaline. Before I knew it, I could see the finish line. I ran as fast as I could, and when I reached the finish line, I heard the brown stallion at the finish line yell out "TIE!" I stopped to catch my breath, and turned to look at the poney I had tied with. She was aqua earth-pony, with blond locks in two braids, and her face held many freckles. She had gentle green eyes, a very pale shade. Her cutie-mark resembled a group of flowers. She didn't look like the type of poney that would be that fast, but toi can't judge a book par it's cover, right? I trotted up to her and offered my hoof. I told her "Good race!" She looked at me for a second, then gently smiled. She took my offer for a bro-hoof and a dit "Same to you!" Once ponies started leaving the arena, Electra ran up to me, a big smile on her face, but I was plus focused on the fact that she was still wearing her coach's uniform. Before I could commentaire on it, she excitedly blurted out "Congratulations! toi won it! And toi definitely earned it!" I sat down, and I stared at her, rather confused. "What are toi talking about? I didn't win. I TIED." She shook her head side to side. "No, not that! Look!" She said, pointing her right hoof towards my flank. I turned to see the most beautiful thing, it nearly brought tears to my eyes. I stuttered a bit, "M-my cutie-mark! I did it! I got my cutie-mark!" A horse-shoe with a yellow lightning bolt through it. I couldn't have been happier!
I'm now a mare, and my magic still doesn't work, but I don't mind. I no longer live in Canterlot. But I still have Electra and other friends, and that's all I need to make me happy!~
