For example, I tend to think of overly-simplistic melodies or rap (as in, no melody at all) to be bad taste. But maybe people still like those pieces of music for their beat. I've also seen it as bad taste to judge a song purely on lyrics, but to some people that is what matters most. As long as you know what you like personally you can't go wrong really.
When someone likes the music I don't like, I can simply say 'that person has bad taste'. But that person thinks that his/hers taste is good, and someone will
probably agree with them.
I don't think it's fair to tell someone they have bad taste just because you don't like it, they could just as easily say the same thing about your taste. But just because they say that your music tastes is bad does it make it true? No, because it's good to you. And if you think the music you like is good then you have good taste. I don't think anyone is so entitled that they can judge what is good quality music and what is bad quality as music is such a subjective topic.
And then there's the fact that some people have a music taste that is literally all over the place. I for one love both classy and calm songs like Regina Spektor's Eet and Corine Bailey Rae's Put Your Records On and songs like Die Antwoord's rather explicit cover of Orinoco Flow and Hollywood Undead's Kill Everyone. In a case like that where a person likes a few songs you love but also a fair amount songs you hate; what then? Do they have bad taste or not? If that makes sense.
I think the only bad taste is when someone is singing about killing someone or themselves or singing boldly in graphic details about sex or something I don't necicarily think that's the case. And this is just my opinion; I think there are some very good songs with such themes. I don't necesarily agree with the messages but some are very catchy and/or have very good vocals. I personally love a song with a bold theme, it takes guts to go out and sing about such seeing as such topics are so controversial. And just because a person listens to that kind of stuff doesn't automatically mean they have bad taste.
whether it's good or not but bad taste per say is when you become vulgar about it, IMO I also disagree with this. I don't think a person instantly has bad taste when they get into the vulgar area. Like I for one admit to loving lot's of songs with vulgar language and themes (Die Antwoord, Hollywood Undead, Millionaires ect) but I also listen to artists like Taylor Swift, Regina Specktor, and Within Temptation who have more class and tame lyrics with beautiful messages. So do I have 'bad taste'? Just because it has some swearing doesn't mean it's a trashy song. Like Eminem's Lose Yourself (it has vulgar lyrics but the message is to seize every opportunity you get and live your life to the fullest) or JJ Demon's Friday Nights Alone (again some vulgar lyrics but the message is raising awareness of economic struggles) or even Blood On The Dance Floor's Mourning Star (this band has a lot of swearing but over all the song is about trying to savor the memories of a lost loved one). A song can be vulgar and classy at the same time if that makes sense. Again this is just my opinion.
Bad taste and good taste is all subjective everyone has a different view as to what is good and bad so what really is bad taste if certain songs and artists are adored or at least liked by one person? If at least a few people like said song or artist is it really bad?
