DVD Review: Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir: It’s Ladybug! 

The odds must be high for a French animated kids show being a major hit in America. Even with Asterix having a cult following in America, the cartoon doesn’t get any play on cable TV. But

became an immediate hit when it appeared on Nickelodeon at the end of 2015. The series about a young boy and girl who have superhero identities and secret crushes on each other wears its French roots openly. They live in Paris. They fight characters that look extremely French. It’s refreshing knowing a generation is growing up without resenting the Eiffel Tower.

Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir: It’s Ladybug! is the fourth volume containing the last six episodes of the first season.

“Prince Fragrance” has a smelly villain that wants to seduce a visiting prince. “Gamer” involves an e-sporting event becoming hijacked by Hawk Moth. “Reflekta” has something go really wrong during school picture day. “The Puppeteer” has puppet controlled by Hawk Moth. “Antibug” has school pal Chloé turned into an evil character by Hawk Moth. “Volpina” gives a villain who sets up evil illusions.

The videos is 1.78:1. The transfers look fine since the show is rather new. The audio is a Dolby Digital 5.1 to swirl the action around your ears. There’s also the original French track in Dolby Digital 5.1. The Spanish dub is Dolby Digital Stereo. The subtitles are English.

Animatics For Selected Scenes (11:10) give a sense of how many visual stages an episode goes through.
