Michael Beardon (Musical Director of This Is It) has to answer:

And so great was Michael, he has replied to me.
"You want to really know you?" The tape around his fingers, he said, well, that feels good. And toi see it, the white tape, your eyes follow him automatically. This is one of the show-biz things he learned when he was a child.
