Well, we really haven't delved that far into the ocean and are discovering new species of poisson and whales all the time. Perhaps when sirènes see our vessels approaching, they go into hiding out of fear.
Because they are very far below in the ocean and very frightened of humans. I believe they do come above sea and go back down quickly. Too much happening that frightens them so they stay far below sea.
