A battlefield. Two flags waving proudly. The sickening chop of a bloody axe. Crimson stains everywhere. A single tear slowly trickling down a boy's cheek. He was blonde, with piercing blue eyes resembling the sea. He opened his mouth and spoke in a barely audible whisper.
"I'll always l’amour you..."
The axe, stained a deep crimson, went down one last time and--
Italy woke up with a start. It took him a few moments to sort out his dream from reality. Once he did, he tried to calm himself down. It was the dreams. They were happening again. He'd had them for a few days recently; they kept on recurring. He never really did have dreams like these. They only happened once a year, when the rendez-vous amoureux, date of August the 6th was nearing.
Italy looked at the time on a nearby digital alarm. 2:53 A.M, August 6th. He had better get some sleep. Before he settled back into his bed, he looked at his friends, who were sleeping on both sides of him. Japon was on his left side, and Germany was on his right. Italy was right in the middle. He liked it. It gave him a sense of warmth and comfort, being surrounded par his friends. Even though World War II had ended a long time ago, Italy, Japan, and Germany were still quite friendly with each other. It was Italy who had suggested that they sleep over at his place tonight.
Germany and Japon were both sleeping soundly. Italy smiled at them and closed his eyes, forgetting all about his unsettling dream.

The first rays of the morning were coming in through the open window when Germany woke up. He liked waking up early, when no one else was awake. Everything always felt tranquil and calm. He guessed it was around 5:30 AM. The sky was dark with just a tinge of light, the sun barely visible. Germany looked at Japan. He was still asleep. And Italy wasn't there.
...Wait, Italy wasn't there? Where was he? Wasn't he usually asleep at this time of day? Where could he be? Why would he be up this early in the morning? Germany was curious. Suddenly, he heard footsteps.
Was it just his imagination? It didn't seem like it. Germany turned around just in time to see Italy heading out the door.
Germany followed.

Germany closed the door behind him, perhaps with a little too much force. The door closed with a slam, waking Japon with a start. Japon rubbed his eyes sleepily, and was about to go back to sleep when he realized that both Italy and Germany weren't there.
They must be outside, Japon thought. He was hesitant to follow them at first, as he didn't wish to be nosy, but eventually, curiosity prevailed.
Japon got up, opened the door, gently closed it behind him, and followed Germany and Italy.

Italy walked down the familiar cobblestone path, toward a meadow of flowers. It was a beautiful jour outside. The wind wasn't too strong, and felt very gentle. It was one of those rare August days that wasn't extremely hot. It was just the right temperature.
Italy knelt down in the meadow. The meadow looked beautiful, with herbe that was a bright shade of forest green. The meadow was overflowing with fleurs of every color imaginable. White jasmines, vivid purple violets, blue cornflowers...and chrysanthemums, which in Italy are a dit to be the fleurs of death, loss, and mourning.
Italy carefully chose the biggest, most beautiful looking flowers, leaving the ones that had smaller buds and were still growing. The whole time, a vibrant red and yellow chrysanthème was right in front of him. It seemed to be staring at him, as if saying, Pick me, pick me!
The fleur seemed so happy, so cheerful. Italy didn't understand why chrysanthemums were a symbol of death in his country. They were so vibrant, so beautiful looking. He hesitated at first, but in the end, Italy ended up picking the chrysanthemum, and added it to the already immense pile of fleurs he had collected.
Then he set off yet again, his arms overflowing with an assortment of colorful flowers.

Picking flowers? What in the world was Italy doing? Germany looked at Italy, who now seemed to be happily sauntering away from the meadow, humming a tune to himself softly. His arms were filled with fleurs of every sort.
Okay, so he's picking flowers, Germany thought. But why this early in the morning? Why today?
Still curious, Germany continued following Italy.

To be honest, Japon had absolutely no idea as to what was going on.
He was following Germany, making sure not to make a single sound. He even controlled his breathing and tried to make it quieter. All he had seen so far was Italy picking flowers, and Germany watching him from a distance. Italy was now heading somewhere else. Nothing really seemed out of the ordinary.
Perhaps I should go back to the house, Japon thought. However, something compelled him to continue following Germany and Italy.

Italy continued walking, humming a tune softly to himself. He wasn't exactly sure what tune he was humming, and exactly when and how he heard it, but he liked how the tune sounded. It was mild and soft, like a lullaby. For a while, Italy's mind was on nothing but the tune, and his legs seemed to automatically carry him to his desired destination without him giving any thought.
He wasn't picking fleurs early in the morning just because he felt like it, he was doing for a reason. Because of the date. August 6th.
August 6th. It used to mean nothing to Italy. It was just a normal day, just like any other. But that was before he found out...
Before he found out that that was the jour the Holy Roman Empire fell.
A while later, he was at his desired destination. Cimiterio, the place a dit in bold black letters.
Cemetery.

Germany was following Italy, and then stopped dead in his tracks. A...cemetery? What was Italy doing at a cemetery? Germany stood still in shock as he watched Italy go to nearby tombstone.
Germany felt his stomach sink. He tried to see Italy's face as he knelt down and placed the fleurs at the tombstone. He was crying. But at the same time he was...smiling.
...Smiling? Leave it to Italy to be the only person to smile while in a cemetery. Still, Germany felt...he didn't exactly know how to describe it. Was it pity? Kind of, but not entirely. Shock? Yes. He felt kind of a mix between pity and shock.
Germany wasn't sure why he felt shocked. Italy was a country, after all. He had obviously experienced loss. So then, why was Germany shocked when he found this out? I guess it's because...it just doesn't seem natural for someone to think that someone so cheerful and happy all the time could have experienced loss, he thought.

Japon followed Germany until he stopped abruptly. Why did he stop? Japon looked in Germany's direction. What was he looking at? A...Japan's eyes widened in surprise. A cemetery?
What was Italy doing at a cemetery?
Japon was about to take a closer look, when--
Thud.
He had tripped on something, and the noise had startled Germany, who looked behind him.
"Ahh...stupid...I should have looked plus carefully..."
"Japan? What are toi doing here? I thought toi were still asleep."
"Oh...well...I saw toi leave with Italy, and I was curious as to what toi were doing. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be nosy. I apologize sincerely," Japon said, flustered. He got up.
To his surprise, Germany wasn't upset. He smiled knowingly.
"I see. I was curious as well, and followed Italy."
"Does Italy know you've been following him?"
"...No. I don't think so, at least. I don't really want him to know, either. He might get upset that I was spying on him."
"Ah, I understand. I don't want him to know I've been watching him, either."

Italy stayed at the tombstone for a while before turning back to go home. He was planning on making Germany and Japon a surprise breakfast before they woke up. However, he turned around only to find--
Japon and Germany.
There was an awkward silence for a few moments. However, it seemed like an eternity to Italy. At last, he spoke.
"W-what are toi doing here?!"
That accidentally came out in a harsher tone than he had expected. He could tell that Germany and Japon were surprised par the tone he had spoken in par the looks on their faces.
"Italy, we were concerned about you. toi usually never get up early, so we wanted to see what the matter was. We apologize if we invaded your privacy," Japon a dit in a calm, even voice.
"Ja. I...I apologize," Germany said.
But Italy wasn't upset at all. His Friends cared for him so much, to the point that they had followed him all the way here. Tears of gratitude flowed from his eyes.
"A-are toi crying? I'm sorry, I never meant to--" Germany's sentence was cut off par a hug from Italy. Italy then proceeded to pull Japon into the hug.
They stood their for a long time, in the warm August air, with the wind blowing gently, carrying the sweet smell of cannoli along with it from a nearby bakery.
When they finally pulled apart, a question came to Italy's mind.
"Germany...Japan..."
"Ja?"
"Hai?"
"Will we always be together?"
Germany smiled slightly.
"I can't make any promises, but I hope we will."
Japon smiled too.
"We have been through so much together. Nothing will divide us."
Italy grinned at both of them and stood there inhaling the cannoli-scented air, and thinking of the words Holy Rome had told him in his dream.
"I'll always l’amour you..."
I'll always l’amour toi too, Holy Rome, Italy thought.
You might not be here anymore, ou toi might still be living, who knows. But wherever toi are, I know toi don't want me to suffer. So I won't mourn over toi anymore. But remember, it's not because I don't l’amour you. It's because I do l’amour toi that I'm not going to be sad whenever I think of you. I l’amour this world, I l’amour my friends, and...
I'll always l’amour you.
