I really don't know. The majority of the characters are important, and contribute to the story at least a little. But there has to be some character that we could do without . . . maybe like some random person that was mentioned once. If that counts.

I believe that any character included in any story is important for something. Even if they arent mentioned much,if the author put a person into a story it's because they have some value it's not really just because they got bored and said "hey let's include a random person named Bob."no it doesnt work like that. Like everyone says we can do without Hufflepuffs,well although they arent mentioned much they still are very important to the story line.(Hufflepuff really only has 2 main characters mentioned in the series which are Cedric,who died and Tonks,who doesnt attend Hogwarts anymore.)So thats why you dont hear much about them.

Um, Lackson4ever85, you probably picked some of the most important characters to the story line. Sirius? Really? He's the titular character of the third book, where the entire story revolved around him. His death fuels Harry's decisions for quite a while. I would rather not explain all of them, but wow, that was a bad list of examples.

For example: Terry Boot, Stewart Ackerley, Bertram Aubrey, Gawain Robards...

lacson4ever its obvious you didn't read the series with enough attention, you have only seen the movies (and didn't pay attention) or you didn't get the question, you wrote 7 characters that are important, 4 of which are extremely important.

Sirius- The 3rd book was named after him, you can't tell me he's not important. Sirius is essentially the reason Voldemort was able to lure Harry to the department of mysteries.

He's one of the most important characters!

Along with Peter, even though I don't like him. Peter was the traitor! Without him, maybe Voldemort wouldn't have killed the Potters. Then he brought Voldy back, he's VERY important! Wow. The others are too.

there are many that have nothing to do with the story but also it was a school seting so there will be more people there

To me:

The trio - obviously no strory without them i mean it's not like you can name a book Harry Potter without haveing a hero named Harry Potter. Every book needs a smart chick like Hermione to help stratigize and a funny careing guy like Ron to cheer up the main guy.

Voldemort - Who would the enemy be, there's no snake faced villan quite like him. He has very intresting past and created a creat story.

Snape - Harry seemed to have learned some of the most valuble things form Snape and he was a very complex and wise character.

Sirius - There is no PoA without him and he had a very important role.

Bellatrix - She made the story enjoyable for me, created some of the major plot lines, and gave Neville a more complex history.

Hagrid - he was the one to find Harry and bring him back.

Dumbledore - he was the one to help Harry thorugh out the story at least with words of advice and without him Voldemort would've had no one to fear.

The Dursleys - without them a good protion of Harrys story and motivations are gone.

I honestly belive that evry character holds his or her own importance to the series weather we like him/her or not.

Cho - Through out GoF she was a big part of Harry's life, she showed how being a wizzard and being a muggle is not much diffrent you still get rejected.

Flure - She shows compition for Harry.

Narcissa - She shows the story courage and how even evil people can love, she both saved Draco and possibly Harry. If she told Voldemort he was still alive Voldemort would've killed him. Does this make Narcissa one of the good guys?

I think every character was important in one way or the other. Some people would say Seamus or Dean, but they were side characters- friends. Without them, the story line wouldn't have been changed BUT the story wouldn't have had that feeling of reality. Everyone else matters. So, I say none.
