The first two movies were the best but they started going downhill after the third.

Most definately Mike Newell for me! I think that he did a superb job...BUT I HATE DAVID YATES!!!!!! For example...In the movie Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix, he let Delorce Umbridge blow up the wall of the Room of Requirement!! What was he thinking? YOU CANT DO THAT!!! HE IS CONTRODICTING THE BOOK!!! He also left out ron on the Quittage team (Yes, i know i spelled Quittage wrong...or did I?) I mean, if you were going through all the shots why in the hell would that be one that you would choose to get rid of? That is one of the biggest parts!!! HES AN IDIOT! And he left out a ton more IMPORTANT stuff than just that! And yes, i know that it was the biggest of all the Harry Potter Books, THAN WHY DONT YOU GET RID OF THE UNIMPORTANT PARTS AND LEAVE IN THE IMPORTANT PARTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I think that Mike Newell should get 1st place, Alfonso Cuaron should get 2nd place, David Yates should get 3rd (the movie was still a good movie even though he made me mad) and Chris Columbus should get 4th because (although he kept to the story line) I thought the movie was boring, and not very exciting.

Thanks for reading this and providing me with your point of view and oppinon!

he had the right idea, keeping MOST of the story the way it was in the book... :-p

The movies are getting better each time... I think many people don't understand how hard it is to turn books like that into movies. The fifth book was the longest one and there was SO much stuff going on. Of course they had to cut MANY plots, but that's the way it is. There's no point in comparing them to the movies because you'll always be disappointed. I can appreciate the movies because everytime I go I know that they'll be different. The fifth was by far the best one so far from a "movie making" point of view.

He stayed the closest to the books. A lot of people sy they're te most boring, but I have to say they make me feel more comfortable when watching them. I hated the newest movie.

Chris's versions were too much like the books for me. It seemed too...dry. Alfonso's wasn't enough like the book. It was a bit over-dramatic and silly. And I just didn't like the OotP movie. GoF was my favorite movie, it was beautifully done, even though it's not exactly my favorite book.

yeah i don't like Mike Newell because the story didn't follow the plot at all. i understand it was a big book but there were so many things i was looking forward to and i was just dissappointed. i literally spent 15 minitues with my friends afterwoods complaining.

tessajanuary picked Alfonso Cuaron (HP & The POA):
Although he may have not stayed exactly true to the story, I think PoA was closest to the feeling of the books. I agree with kraamermich in that Yates veered to far away from the books, and as OotP was my favorite book, all of the stuff that he cut really made me angry. It was the longest book, yet one of the shortest movies! He could have left so much more in it!

I thought that Columbus made the stories quite true to the books, but I think that they're rather boring, and besides none of the kids can act at all in the first two! Is that his fault? Not entirely, but I think that he probably could have gotten more out of them.
And as for Newell, well, I think that GoF was the worst movie. The story did not hold together at all (one of my friends who hasn't read the books went to see it and didn't understand anything that was going on :/ ) and he changed the characters way too much.

So, overall I would say that Cuaron was my favorite, but really I have been under-impressed with all of the adaptations.

chris kept pretty close to the book but i feel that he left out some key characters.. and because of that they cannot make an appearance in the later movies so.... and the forth movie dobby was left out so that left him out basically for the rest of the series unless they are gay and make his comeback really gay

Priscilita22 you read my mind! I sincerely believed that OOTP was the best film by far. Sure it cut out a lot from the books, but that was a freaking LONG book!!! I believe that Chris Columbus did well in following the books, but film wise I think he did the worst when I look back on it. Urgh. Alfonso Cuaron I believe is my second favorite for he had an amazing style in POA, though I couldn't get over the end for a while there. Mike Newell is my least favorite. I really disliked Goblet of Fire and was truly dissapointed as well in his choice of film composers (Patrick Doyle). Listen to Patrick Doyle's Harry Potter theme and Eragon theme and then come back to me with a difference...if you can find one. David Yates and Nicholas Hooper did an amazing job for Yates translated the darkness and the fact that the wizards were growing up very well and Nicholas Hooper produced a SUPERB score for the film that I have yet to get tired of. I sincerely hope that they produce Deathly Hallows as well =)

Phoenix315 picked Alfonso Cuaron (HP & The POA):
Doesn't the screen writer have more to do with what material is in the movie than the director? I'm upset that a lot was missing in the past few movies but they are so much longer so theres not much that could be done. I think the best direction was by Alfonso Curon b/c he was just able to set the perfect mood. I think both Newell and Yates did a fine job as well.

Loved OotP! I think Yates did a great job with the material he was given. I absolutely loathed the 3rd movie. I hated all the artsy fartsy stuff. Important things were left out and replaced with the whomping willow being a bird murderer. I was told before going to see OotP that I should look at the movie as the directors fanfic... and that's what I did, so I think that's why I enjoyed it so much.

Agreed with sheildmaiden! I don't understand why people hate David Yates so much! I mean, he had to make movies out of the LARGEST Harry Potter books in the series (exept GOF), and you have to cut out SOMETHING! Your always going to have critics, though. For example, even though he didn't put Ron on the Quidditch team in OOTP, he put it in the next movie! I think that people are WAYYY too quick to judge, and honestly, you can't really understand why the directors did what they did until the end of the movie series. Also, for any of those who HAVEN'T read the books (most of you have, though) who are you to judge? If you don't know the full story, with a series as complicated as Harry Potter, please read the books or you will always be in the dark.

ToyletGnome picked Alfonso Cuaron (HP & The POA):
He cut a few things here and there but parts that weren't going to affect the overall plot. He did a great job at capturing the darker mood (of course, it doesn't hurt when you've got John Williams) and tied the whole thing together beautifully.

Yates sucks, the movies have so much cut out they don't make sense. He ditches plot and character development to make room for some more CGI clusterfucks (can anyone say attack on the burrow?)

Alfonso Cuaron was awesome, he made the best Harry Potter film and will always be the best HP director.

Columbus was truest to the books, which, I mean, what is better than the books? Certainly not these films. Cuaron forgot that there was a plot half the time (character development only goes so far, sir), Newell made GoF way too episodic in my opinion, and Yates made a film of montages.
