Hermione isn't ugly in the books; she's just not your typical, pretty girl with no flaws.

Well when they cast her thy probably didn't know how pretty she would turn out to be.

That's Hollywood for ya! And that's nothing to me, compared to how much they changed plots and employ Daniel Radcliffe, possibly THE richest annoying child star :P

They never said that Hermione was ugly in the books... remember how pretty she was supposed to look in the fourth book at the ball?

She doesn't doesn't care how she looks... if she really tried, I'm sure she'd have been gorgeous every day in the books!

that really does get me mad... i wouldnt call her gorgous in the movies as Hermione, but in really life she is pretty... i think they should have kept the bush hair... its only fair

I always pictured Hermione as a kind of "ugly duckling" who didn't really care about how she looked and then turned into a swan when she got older and was a real natural beauty.

I don't think she's ugly! Goodness no, I just don't think she's gorgeous, she is very pretty.

I agree with kateliness Hermione isnt supposed to be ugly she just never cared about her appearence but in the Yule Ball she looked really good and it was the only time when she dressed up!
And I dont remember in what book it was but in one of the first sonmething hits her teeth and she has to get them fixed and so she makes them straight!

Hermione grew into her beauty (look at book four). She was awkward as a preteen, and so was Emma IMO. Weren't we all? ;o)

It's never said that Hermione isn't pretty...she just doesn't really care about her appearance. Emma Watson does a good job, though i would like it if her hair was a bit bushier.

I think that Emma Watson is gorgous. It doesnt make me made though, because Emma's performance covers up wat shes supposed to look like...It doesnt matter what she looks like, because she does such a TERIFFIC JOB playing as Hermione, that you dont notice it as much that she not ugly...you just see Hermione, Perfectly

Like several people have already mentioned, it is never stated in the books that Hermione is ugly. She's just one of those girls who never obsesses over her looks. It is mentioned that Hermione looked very pretty at the Yule Ball, so she can't be that ugly in the books. I think Emma was a good choice, and really it isn't like they could have looked at her when she was younger and predicted that she was going to turn out as pretty as she is now. Emma does a good job portraying Hermione in the films so it never really bothered me, I just wish she had bushier hair.

It doesn't bug me that she's pretty... really just that she shouldn't look perfect with the hair and makeup all the time, as Hermione really couldn't care less about that sort of thing most of the time. (For example: in the third movie what was with Hermione all horrified about what the back of her head looked like?)

Hermione wasn't supposed to be ugly, persay, but she was supposed to have bushy hair and bucked teeth. Which Emma Watson doesn't have.

i didn't picture her as ugly i just wish they could have kept her hair bushy till at least he yule ball that way it would have been a bigger transformation

Hermione was never meant to be ugly, she'd just rather study than fuss over her appearance. I think Emma Watson is too super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot, but she's a really good Hermione and I don't think anyone could do the role better than her.

I always thought Hermione was supposed to be like Laura Ingals in the "Little House on the Prairie", at least like in the TV serie - I haven't read the books.

The actress who played her was, as a child, not ugly (whatever that even means), but not especially beautiful either. That's why they cast her, they said - because she was nothing special in looks. And she had buck-teeth. But as she grew up during the serie, she grew up into quite a beauty.

I think Emma Watson was a good choice for Hemione. I didn't think she was "gorgeous" in the first film but as she grew.

And if she didn't have buck teeth... Big deal? Hermione's looks do not have any essential or at least crucial, point to the story or her character, as far as I see. (:

they should make her have bushier hair, i am not worried about the teeth she got them fixed anyway. i think they try and make her look to pretty if they put less stuff on hr it would be beter too.

Because that's what happens in films, everything is glamourised. How she portrays Hermione in terms of personality is more important.

Not really ugly, but they pretty much dressed Watson in Hogwarts robes and that was it. She looks nothing like her description in the novels, and her acting is mediocre at best. (one word: eyebrows)

JK never said she was ugly, she just said she had buck teeth. and plus when she fixes them, and Harry sees her going to the Yule ball with Viktor he describes her as being pretty, :)

I imagined her as a pretty average girl and Emma Watson is very pretty but I've seen prettier girls :)

I think Emma is great, although before the movies I think I did imagine Hermione being a little less conventionally attractive. That said, I don't think any of that should be taken out on Emma - if the people in charge of wardrobe felt Hermione needed to be less pretty, they could have made Emma up as such.

But I do think that Emma aged very well, and I sort of imagine that happening to Hermione too. I never really imagined her as being the type who cared too much about how she looked, but she was fortunate enough to blossom naturally as she got older, and that's kind of what happened with Emma anyway! Though like I said, I think Emma was prettier than I pictured Hermione from the start, but it's not a thing that bothers me.

I think Hermione was meant to be more plain, and not generally into her looks, than actually ugly. But I do think they did prettify her up more for the films (typical), for example dropping her frizzy hair after only a few films. It bothers me a bit because I think there was a reason she wasn't meant to be stereotypically drop-dead-gorgeous.
