How is Mako sirènes a Spin Off Series to H20 just add water?

Okay so how is mako sirènes a spin off series to h20 just add water Iam very confused I get that it has to do with sirènes and takes place at mako island but mako sirènes does not even have the same characters. Can someone please help here.
