Was Mako Island based of a real island?

Is there an actual island in Australia that represents Mako?

I don't think so, coz the island looks pretty fake :P lol. I agree with the first answer, it could've been named after the Mako Shark. The picture is a Mako shark. Oh yeah, and in season two, doesn't it say that there are sometimes Mako sharks around the island??

Hiya,

Yes the island itself is indeed a real island located 50km of the goal coast of Queensland Australia. It's accueil to many types of animal life and sharks. However the island isn't called Mako, in real life. The only thing I'm unsure of is the name itself. To the north of the island there is a place called Tritons reef, a place where sharks go to breed.
