Extras casting under way with Navarre confirmed for Game of Thrones season 6 

With scouting moving to Almería in Spain, we had counted out Bardenas Reales Natural Park in Navarre as a possible location for season 6

filming. The semi-desert was reported as being considered a month ago for this season’s shooting. As it turns out, we were wrong about it being too similar to Almería for both sites to be used!

Just yesterday, Modexpor International, who handles the GoT extras casting in Spain, posted an announcement on their Facebook, confirming that casting is now underway for extras in Tudela, Navarre.

The announcement says that extras casting for Navarre will be held tomorrow, July 4th, in the city of Tudela at the Jesuit College, starting at 8:00 AM. (Located less than an hour from the Bardenas, Tudela is the second largest city in Navarre and makes sense as a base for production in the area.)

According to the announcement, Modexpor International is searching for 800 men and 400 women, aged 18-65, with very dark or Mediterranean coloring. They’re looking for people without modern hairstyles, and the men must be in good physical condition, though it does say “NO bodybuilders.” Men must be at least 175 cm (about 5’7″) and women at least 170 cm (about 5’5″). Men may need to let their facial hair grow out, and no tattoos are permitted on anyone. They’re asking for locals, people who live in the area of Tudela, to attend this casting.

Extras will be working from September 20th through the 25th.

Given the specificity of the casting call and the terrain, it looks like the people of Navarre will be standing in for the Dothraki Daenerys encountered in the

season finale. Almería is reportedly still in the mix and many are hoping its southern semi-desert will be the site of the Tower of Joy scene, if it happens.

so it seems like they’re just moving all their usual croatia filming to spain this season?

Doubt it. They’re filming in a sort-of-desert, probably for the Dothraki, considering the requirements of the casting. Dubrovnik will still be King’s Landing, for example. Still, they’re certainly diversifying things: they’re filming in four Spanish locations (Girona, Pensicola, Almería, Navarra), two in Macedonia (Prilep and Ohrid), as well as the usual four in Croatia (Dubrovnik, Split, Klis, Sibernik.)

Very intriguing. This certainly sounds like the Dothraki, and it follows that the Dothraki will be quite important in at least some scenes/episodes next season. Otherwise they wouldn’t go to so much trouble. I’ve read quite a lot of internet speculations that the show would skip Daenerys’ Dothraki interlude altogether to hurry her on to Westeros. It seems to be just the opposite. At this late stage in the show, it must mean that somehow the Dothraki will play a part in the end-game, especially perhaps in Essos, and that Essos is equally important in the end game as Westerosi feudal power struggles. The Dothraki were big in Season 1, so it would also be a nice symmetry to bring them back as the show nears the end.

Didn’t WotW say the Macedonia report was bullshit. I remember a tweet about it (and if it were legit we would have gotte a post about it here).

Apparently Watchers on the Wall confirmed it as a fake. Sorry about that. It was on the GoT wiki and I assumed it was right. The source, however, was a British tabloid… not exactly the most reliable of sources.

A few sources have told me that the Croatian filming is dialed back a lot this year, I mentioned it in a previous post. It’s not unreasonable to speculate some of it may shift to Spain. Or they’re just not doing a lot of King’s Landing exteriors.

If they follow the books, maybe Dubrovnik just isn’t wintery enough…?

So, the filming this year will be basically between North Ireland and Spain?

Thoughts on Nell Tiger Free returning to Belfast?

I’d assume they need her for post-boat-death shenanigans, and not because she’s not actually dead.

It’s been reported that the President of Andalusia (Spain) has met with people in charge of Fresco Film Services in order to polish the details of the shooting in Almeria:

Both the books and the show make such a big deal about the Dothraki refusing to cross the sea, that I always figured that meant one day they would.

Not sure what part the Dotgraki have to play but it really brings Danaeryss story full circle and there’s something nice about that.
