All New ‘Frozen’-Inspired Stage Musical Coming to Disney California Adventure Park in 2016
posted on September 9th, 2015 by Shawn Slater, Communications Manager, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment
Disney’s blockbuster musical “Frozen” has become a true phenomenon around the world and soon, the story of “Frozen” will come to spectacular life in an all-new theatrical production in summer 2016 at the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure park.
This new show will immerse you in the world of “Frozen” as never before, with elaborate costumes and sets, stunning special effects and surprising scenic transformations.
“Our stage production of ‘Frozen’ will stay true to the heart and soul of the film,” says Dana Harrel, Portfolio Creative Entertainment Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering. “Anna and Elsa will carry the audience on an emotional journey that includes show-stopping production numbers and a few unique theatrical twists. We can’t wait for everyone to see it!”
With a new show set to open at the Hyperion Theater, it’s time for Aladdin to make his final wish and set the Genie free, as the cast of the award-winning “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” prepares to take its final curtain call on January 10, 2016 after nearly 14,000 shows.
“Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” has taken millions of guests wonder by wonder since its debut in January 2003, bringing with it such fantastic theatrical delights as Aladdin’s entrance on the elephant, a magic carpet ride over the audience, an original song by Alan Menken and the ever-evolving, tour-de-force performance of the wise-cracking Genie. To this day, the incredible talent of the show’s captivating cast has made every turn a surprise, every moment red letter.
“Thanks to our amazing cast and the many, many fans, ‘Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular’ has enjoyed a longer run at Disney California Adventure park than we could have ever imagined,” said Kris Theiler, Vice President of Operations for Disney California Adventure park. “Today, we are excited to share more exciting news about another story that will soon come to life for guests at the Hyperion Theater. With larger-than-life musical numbers, wondrous scenery and lovable characters, ‘Frozen’ will begin entertaining guests in 2016.”
“Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” is scheduled to be performed several times daily through January 10, 2016, so fans of the show still have plenty of opportunities left to catch a magic carpet ride to Agrabah. Additionally, the Broadway production of “Aladdin” continues its successful run in New York. Stay tuned to Disney Parks Blog in the coming months for details on how we plan to celebrate the Disney California Adventure park favorite before, as Genie says, he’s “outta here!”

Does this mean we could see the exterior of the Hyperion redone?
I’m so sad and disappointed to hear this. I absolutely love the Aladdin show. The Genie’s jokes are always being updated, so I’ve made it a point to see the show every time I visit because it’s so much fun to see what new things the Genie has up his sleeve. I have nothing against Frozen, but it seems redundant to have a musical directly across from the Frozen Sing-Along. I wish I still lived in the area so I could watch the Aladdin show one more time before it goes.
More importantly, does this mean we get our Muppets back?

This is horrible. I love the Aladdin show and it’s amazing cast. I always visit every time I’m in the parks. Why fix what’s not broken? This is likely going to make me re-think renewing my pass.
Aww, sorry to see Aladdin go. Well it has been a wonderful run. And, hah, California Adventure will have a Frozen Broadway style musical before Broadway does.
Whatever Disney does, they go above and beyond with the very best quality. I’m sure this show will be a great show. That being said, there is a reason Aladdin has been running since 2003. People love it. Parents love it, kids love it. The songs are timeless and it’s a show that can be done on every trip. Every seat is filled. You get you ticket value alone with this show. I have a feeling that this might not come to pass with the new Frozen show.
I’ll be sad to see the final curtain for “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular”. Many thanks to the cast and crew (past and present) for a visually beautiful, entertaining, laugh filled production. I have seen much more than my fair share of the 14,000 shows and enjoyed each one just as much as I did the first.
You will be able to see Aladdin aboard the Disney Fantasy and on Broadway!
I am so sad. I love the Aladdin show. It’s amazing and different every time we go depending on the Genie. It’s adult and kid friendly which Frozen will not be. As an adult, I will not be drawn into going to see a Frozen show.
Will that mean the return of Muppet Vision 3D and the “Tangled” and “Beauty And The Beast” Storytelling in the Royal Theater?
Mixed feelings! I love the Aladdin show, but I must admit, it will be nice to have something new and fresh in the Hyperion theater.
I know Disney will do a great job here…so I’m looking forward to it!
And I agree with others who said that it would be nice for the theater to get a big renovation – with restrooms added, covered waiting area, enclosed stairs to the upper levels, etc. Always felt like a bit of the magic was missing when I could look down out of the park from the 2nd or 3rd floors of the stairway.

This is the best news I have ever hear. I’ve seen Frozen 80 times and I know I will see the show as well besides meeting them at there meet & Greet.
I am so sad to see Aladdin go. I understand the rationale, but the idea that I’ll never hear Lucky Bird sung again is making my heart hurt. (And no, they didn’t put Lucky Bird in the Broadway show, so I won’t be able to hear it there.) I’m really really hoping they’ll bring a DCA Cast recording of Aladdin to the parks so we can get it before it’s gone. (It shouldn’t be too hard, they did make one at some point, because it’s being sold by some random person on e-Bay for $300.)
Why not replace a show that isn’t beloved by nearly all who see it (like Magical Map) and get the Frozen show in a venue that’s more thematically appropriate too (fantasyland)? Sometimes shows are unexpected home runs (like festival of the lion king) – it makes more sense to keep what works and replace what doesn’t. I’ll be sad to not be able to hear Genies jokes again.
I have a lot of mixed feelings of this. I’m really am getting exhausted of the amount of Frozen in the parks and I’m really going to miss Genie’s jokes (I’m a Patriots football!!!). At least Aladdin will still be on the Disney Fantasy. Does this mean Muppet Vision 3D will return? What about the Tangled and Beauty and the Beast shows in Fantasy Faire? It seems a little redundant IMHO to have this show and the sing along a short walk away. Why can’t we have BOTH Aladdin and Frozen in Hyperion?.
I am not a fan of this news. This show was my favorite thing about California adventure, and now you are replacing it with frozen?!? This makes me angry/sad! If this show HAD to be replaced, I would have wanted tangled as rumors suggested last year! But not frozen! Aladdin is popular enough to keep holding its own there, especially because of the genie’s jokes! If frozen has to be a musical, at least find space to build a new theater! All this frozen is killing me!! Also, if this show ends up actually coming to fruition, at least bring back Muppet vision 3d and Rapunzel/belle storytelling. But the best solution: don’t remove Aladdin. Please. Listen to the people. We don’t want aladdin removes. I consider it a classic attraction, and I bet other people do too. Please. Don’t bring frozen to the Hyperion theater. Build a whole new theatre just for it!
You tried to do this a few years ago with Toy Story and the fans revolted. Aladdin is second only to Radiator Springs Racers for attractions in this park and you’re getting rid of it?
Frozen deserves an attraction, but not at the cost of the best stage show Disney has ever done.
It’s so sad to see a classic leave the Disney Parks! That said, a new show will be nice to bring in a new audience.
The problem with Frozen replacing Aladdin is that it will not be able to match the spectacle of the Aladdin show, unless they throw everything at it like they are doing with the Shanghai Disneyland shows, but I feel it would just be a slightly longer version of the sing-a-long currently in the Muppet’s theater.
The Aladdin show is fantastic and I make a point to watch it every Disney trip. But 13 years is a long, long life for a show of this variety. In this instance I believe change is good! Yes Frozen is everywhere, but it’s everywhere because the public demands it to be. It’s extremely popular for a reason! It’s a unique, great story with many memorable characters. I have confidence it’ll be terrific!
This is sad news for me! I am surprised that the Aladdin show is ending, as the movie is just about to be released from the vault. With so many kids getting the chance to see Aladdin for the first time this year, I am sure there will be a renewed interest, whereas quite a few people (myself incuded) are all Frozen-ed out.
I’m excited for the new Frozen show but I do love the Aladdin show as well. The Aladdin show is adored by many and I understand why people are over something new being added that is Frozen themed. A happy medium I believe is to just take out the Frozen Sing-A-Long show and put the new Frozen show in that theatre, that way we could still keep a classic show and be delighted with a new one, which will definitely still have us singing along with the show!
No no no! The Aladdin show is AMAZING and hysterical and I can bring all three of my children (son 10, daughters 9 & 7) and my husband and we can all enjoy it together. That’s why Disneyland was built, wasn’t it? So Walt could actually do things with his family. With Frozen…my daughters & I love the movie, and we may go to the show once. But we’re over the age of the Frozen hysteria. And my son will NOT go…
But with Aladdin…we can all go as a family. We laugh at the contemporary jokes that the Genie makes. We sing the same songs together I sang in high school when the movie came out.
I’m just thankful we will be going to Disneyland this Halloween & Christmas so we can see the show two more times before it’s over.
This is so disappointing to hear. I love Aladdin I go see a show everything I visit. Thank you to the cast and crew for so many amazing shows! I wish Frozen wasn’t taking over everything!
This actually heartbreaking. I have loved this show for so long and the fact that they kept the gene jokes revelent after so many shows was part of the whole appeal. Know don’t get me wrong I am a frozen fan. But I don’t know if I could muster the want to see this new show after the harsh removal especially only a couple of months after the Blu Ray gets released. With the lack of success of the frozen night party, you would think they would leave the things that work alone. I love Disney with all my heart but this is a giant mistake.
ok, so here is why I’m honestly quite surprised that Disney is doing this. Aside from how popular the Aladdin show is compared to most Disney parks stage shows, and how otherwise Aladdin is an under appreciated movie when it comes to Disneyland. But the biggest reason I’m surprised is because Disney Theatrical Productions announced almost a year ago that they were working on a Broadway treatment for Frozen. And I didn’t think that the parks would want to have a “free” and most likely shorter version in the parks when they could be charging $$$ for Broadway tickets.
I think this is a bad choice. I understand that some people like Frozen and want a show, but there is a sing along steps away. I go to Disneyland at least once a year and always watch Aladdin, it will be missed.
Boo. Aladdin has been a highlight of our trips. When family was in a bad mood or overtired, a trip to Aladdin and Agrabah brought smiles and enthusiasm for the rest of the day. Sad to see this old friend go. Feelings about Disney’s decision? Boo! Feelings about saying goodbye to Aladdin? Boo-hoo.
Sandi from CA on September 10th, 2015 at 1:16 am
Boo booooo Don’t take away the Aladdin show. Frozen is a good movie but it’s time to LET IT GO!!!!!!!!!! Every visit to Disney’s California Adventure is a must see the Aladdin show. I took a friend just last month to see the Aladdin show for the first time and she was blown away by the performance. The Genie is by far my favorite person to see he is alway great for a laugh followed by the person playing the carpet how one can show so much expression and never saw a word. This show is perfect for adults and children of all ages. The last time when I went to see the Frozen sing along it was only 1/3 filled the last time I saw Aladdin not a single seat open. PLEASE DONT TAKE AWAY THE ALADDIN SHOW
The only thing I think would be a fair replacement for Aladdin would be a The Little Mermaid musical in the style of the one going on in Japan, not the US Broadway version! But I love Aladdin and it should stay. The show is always packed! Why change a good thing? I like the other user’s idea to replace Mickey’s Magical Map with a Frozen show in Disneyland, because Fantasyland would be much better theming!
Hate to say it… but I’m just pretty disappointed. Frozen is a good movie. But does that mean it needs to be everywhere?
What happened to that Toy Story show that was in talks years ago? Think I’d rather see that become reality.
No no no no no. There are already two Frozen-themed stage shows in the parks. Plus the back lot (Muppets theatre) and half the animation studio dedicated to Frozen character experiences in DCA alone. People love the Aladdin show because it’s a comedy and continually revamped to stay fresh. We’ll all be sick of Frozen by the time they open the show in January. I predict practically empty theaters within a year.
No no no!!!! Frozen fever is over. My 6yr old cousin is over frozen. If your going to get rid of Aladdin put a Disney Classic it its place. Lion king, Mary poppins, Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast… Im disappointed with you Disney my childhood disney characters keep getting replaced with all the new stuff. Kids should see what we watched as kids and the mushy happily ever afters. I still want my childhood present since it’s my money that is spent there. I want to feel forever young when I walk through those gates and see the joys of when I was a kid. Very sad Disney.
Apparently I’m in the minority here, but I’ve never been a particular fan of the Aladdin show, especially now after having seen the Broadway version. It’s fun a few times, but I don’t think it’s a classic, and I think it’s more than time to replace it with something. Not sure if Frozen is the right something, but if that doesn’t last, there’s potential for something else to be even better. Nothing can last forever.
Aladdin has had an amazing run; I suppose 13 years is a long time for a musical at an amusement park . . . Many thanks to all who made this such a memorable, engaging, and amazing show! It’s become a classic with its fans and will be cherished in our memories and hearts for years to come ✨
I’m sure that the new show will be of the quality and caliber that we’ve come to expect do appreciate from Disney. And I like Frozen too but I feel that there’s already enough of it at both Parks. For me, it’s a bit too much . . . I look forward to the production following Frozen.
Sounds like a great idea and don’t poo poo the idea until you see the results! It could be and most probably will be a terrific show because it’s Disney! Maybe we’ll get a new Muppets show, a much better new and improved Muppet 3D or 4D show and just hopefully the Hyperion Theater will finally be upgraded with restrooms and improved!
I’m sad to see Aladdin go, I saw one of the very FIRST test showings of the show there, wow like 10 years ago now?
It will be missed, but Aladdin has grown up and moved to Broadway. While Frozen has been hyped way too much, I am excited to see something new. So I’m looking forward to it!
Give it a few years and Aladdin will be a traveling show too
Please, just remember what happened with the toy story announcement 5 years ago. The same thing is happening now. Just don’t replace aladdin with frozen, and build a whole theater for it, please, so we can keep Aladdin, that is my wish
UGGGHHHHHHHHHH. Why? Seriously, Disney, why? You’re already working on the Frozen Broadway show. Sure, create a new show, but give something else a chance. Why not Tangled? Why not Mulan or Pocahontas? So, so disappointing.
Steven from CA on September 10th, 2015 at 2:21 am
You are either 5 months late to April fools. Or 7 months early. Disney needs to move on from frozen a bit. The kids might like it but the majority of adults have had enough. Bring something more classic that both kids and adults will love.
Fred from CA on September 10th, 2015 at 2:28 am
People have got to understand that Frozen is Disney Animation’s biggest hit since The Lion King. Frozen received acclaim from both critics and audiences, won a Golden Globe, two Academy Awards, and is now the highest grossing animated film of all time. As such, there has definitely been a big *public demand* for more Frozen content.
This is no different that when The Lion King was first released in 1994. The film became a surprise hit, and as a result, it got lots of exposure in the parks, with many attractions and entertainment. Even today, The Lion King is still used a lot in Disney park entertainment.
If Disney has indeed been conducting surveys, I wouldn’t be surprised if most casual park guests are in favor if this. It is no secret that the Internet is constantly filled with negativity, and all of the negativity is almost always from a very vocal minority. (A relative minority)
There is definitely a huge disconnection between the cynical Internet crowd, and casual theme park guests.
The Aladdin show debuted in 2003. It is a wonderful show and has had a *fantastic* run, but as far as I’m concerned it has run its course. It’s time for a different show for the Hyperion Theater.
I think it is a really great idea, and this will most likely mean that the Frozen sing-along show will end its run and the Muppets will return.
I’m not happy to hear this news. The Aladdin show
I have been watching since the very first time I went to disney which was in 2003. My brother loves the Aladdin show! When we went in 2003 I was in 4th grade and he was in third grade. We since been disneyland multiple of times Aladdin show was always are family favorite. Now he is in the US Navy.
We talking on planning a trip disney next year. I am about to leave to disney for 21st birthday in 3 days. I guess now I will assist on going to see Aladdin show twice. I will miss the genies jokes a lot. They are always getting better every time. The Aladdin show always adult and kid friendly. I don’t think frozen will be adult friendly. Frozen will not be as good as the classic’s. Like Cinderella, Snow White, sleeping beauty, beauty and the beast, the little merimaid, the Aladdin, and Mulan! Disney please listen to to your fans don’t replace Aladdin with frozen.
Thor from CA on September 10th, 2015 at 2:42 am
This is good news! Aladdin was clever and fun when it opened in 2003, solid and steady by 2007, but by 2010 it was time to move on. This change should have happened five years ago, but better late than never. And I know Disneyland, being Disneyland, will do a top notch and fabulous production for Frozen.
And like someone else mentioned, it’s neat that Disneyland gets the Broadway caliber version of a Frozen show before Broadway actually does.
The reason the Aladdin show remains popular is because the Genie’s jokes can be updated and remain relevant, so it never gets old. I can see a Frozen show getting old fast. Make a Frozen dark ride in the old Motor Boat Cruise area instead.
