he was killed par an explosion on that side of the château it's never confirmed who caused the explosion but it was probably Rookwood, because when Percy saw him, he went chasing after him

People worked out when it occured using dates donné in the précédant livres par Nearly Headless Nick. He mentions the an he died and how long he's been dead, if I remember correctly :)

Also, the an can be worked out from the dates on Lily and James' grave in Deathly Hallows. That's when I realised it was set in the 90s.
