Several teams at Universal deserve credit on making this film a huge success. The production team worked hard to make the film accessible to the widest audience possible. The marketing team pushed great results with its release date strategy change and designing a campaign that expanded the amount of people that would come to this film.”

it’s a hard one to pin down in terms of a perfect weekend projection. It boils down two factors working against each other, one being that
is a fan-fave big-screen literary adaptation and the second being Valentine’s Day. This ying-yang factor has most conservative estimates keeping
in the $76-85M four-day realm. However, if the film turns out to be a great Valentine’s Day date flick and benefits from the holiday run, some think it still has a shot at $90M-plus over FSSM. Most fan-fueled literary bigscreen properties, regardless of age demo, are front-loaded at the box office, with Friday being their highest day and Saturday showing a modest decline, e.g.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey also slipped 25% in its second day and

Actually, this entire ’50 Shades of Degradation’ is pathetic. It points out the tremendous flaws in our male/female relationships. If men and women need to fantasize about controlling and degrading a sexual partner in order to get turned on — then, we are truly out of touch with what human intimacy is all about.
I would suppose that women, who seem to be running to this, are so unsatisfied with their sexual partners that perhaps we need to ask ourselves — why?
But, the unfortunate reality is that very few people will look at this for what it is, but instead, look at it for what the ‘studio’ wants us to see it as. Yes, their dream is that we’ll look at this behavior as — ‘normal’.
I’m pretty sure that abuse hotlines, battered women’s shelters, and our local police departments will be dealing with the aftermath of our ‘normalizing’ the subject matter of S&M.
Women as victims is nothing new in this world. It’s truly a shame to see this so ‘mainstreamed’. It’s particularly disturbing to know that their are so many women drinking the kool-aid know as — sexploitation. God luck with that, ladies.
If people thought it was “normal”, they wouldn’t go see it. Normal is boring.
People, it’s only a movie, It’s not meant to point out anything and normalizing it, please. If watching this makes you want to run to a BDSM club you have bigger issues. It was meant for one thing and one thing only, entertainment. When you watch a vampire movie do you want to run out and take a bite out of someone’s neck? If it really bothers you don’t go but please don’t try and make something from nothing.
Hi Darcie — I truly respect the confidence that you have in the American public. Me? I just look to the politicians that Americans have elected and I realize how incredibly gullible and ignorant the majority is. I wish I had your ability to see the glass half full.
Trust me, ignorant freaks will always be ignorant freaks. I’m an attorney, and thus, I deal with the results of anti-social ‘human behavior’ everyday.
At this point in my life, I’ve lost the ability to believe that the majority of people are much more than sheep. Yes, monkey see — monkey do. Unfortunate fact.
So true. I saw it for entertainment and because I love going to the movies. I didn’t see it because I thought it would change my life and I would go do the things I saw in the movie. People are taking this way to serious. If you want to watch it, watch it if you don’t, don’t watch it. It isn’t rocket science.
Just like you see a rise in machete murders when a Friday the 13th opens?
You have to think there will be more movies like 50 Shades of Grey. I do not just mean the other 2 “Grey” books. I mean other movies by other directors that explore the idea of a sadomasochistic relationship. As a guy I really do not understand it. But there is a part of a woman’s’ psyche in the 21st century that is attracted to this kind of material. The critics said the books were terrible and now other critics are saying the movie is terrible. It does not make any difference. The movie is meeting a need that was previously unmet so it is going to be wildly successful. I will predict that future movies will explore the topic in much more detail to see just how far they can go and see what is commercially acceptable.
Have you read the book or seen the movie? You’re really overreacting.
I read the books and found absolutely no story! They were one pathetic sex scene after another. I found myself completely skipping through all the garbage to find the story and never did. I wouldn’t waste one nickel on the movie!!!!
Think of the time and money you spent reading all three books (looking for a story). Maybe that wasn’t really your motive. You may not need a raincoat and newspaper to watch the tim in a theater.
I read the books. After awhile cheap thrills are kind of boring. Women aren’t going to it because they want to be dominated. They are going, unfortunately, because the buzz is urging them to. We will see how long the movie brings in money. I’m a woman. I read the books out of curiosity. The individual above says “the movie is meeting a need.” Wrong. The movie is overhyped and hot for the first weekend. Period.
Does it even matter to you that she turns out to be the one who takes control and Christian Grey becomes the subservient?
It matters to me that that doesn’t happen, so….
Whatever goes on behind closed doors between consenting adults is fine with me. Lots of decent, moral, upstanding citizens like to get into s&m – and probably far stranger stuff – because they find it exciting. It strikes me as pretty naive to extrapolate out from that to the downfall of healthy culture. People who are having good sex seem to me overall to be happier, better adjusted people. Only a fool would try and define what ‘good’ means for everyone.
FYI, it wasn’t written for men to fantasize about controlling women. It was written for women to fantasize about having taboo sex…and having a dominating man “forcing” the situation, it absolves the woman of any personal guilt in liking it.
It’s curious that so many have missed this point. I wonder why. Perhaps they were so enthralled by the fantasy that they couldn’t see past it to the crux of the issue.
Bingo. But most people here on planet Earth don’t think with their brain, only their genitals so they don’t care. Hey, if something feels good then it must be good, right?
Getting tied up in bed and blindfolded is not degrading. I certainly like it. His character is fucked up ! But in the end of the three books he changes she tames him! And she likes it. She does everything by choice and when it’s no it’s no. Everything is valid in bed when two people are of age and consent to everything . That does not mean it’s what you do with your sexual partner(s) . I certainly like a little spice in the bedroom not just missionary and me on top.
Also I don’t ever want to hear you pretentious hipster types mocking audiences for getting behind an Adam Sandler comedy again after this. Atleast those idiotic films aren’t taken seriously.
This idiotic film is, which makes it 100X more sad.
Comparing the box office between Passion of The Christ and Fifty Shades of Grey or even saying them together in the same sentence is giggle eliciting. Oh, you naughty, naughty Christians.
The comparison to Passion makes sense. Both are S&M flicks.
Spot on! SHADES may be erotic, but it’s not pornographic which the nauseatingly violent PASSION is in spades.
Just saw “Fifty Shades”. Trust me; PotC was much more erotic.
sweet pea, do you know what the definition of pornographic is? I know we keep changing definitions in our dictionaries but I looked a few years ago in a Webster’s and it said, “Something that is OR is meant to be sexually arousing”. Is this meant to be sexually arousing? YES. Is a PG13 rated sex scene meant to be sexually arousing? YES. What if I looked at my dog or a potato and was sexually aroused, would he or it be porn?YES. BY DEFINITION, YES. You may not like that but it’s the truth. I am very concerned that so many people don’t even understand what porn is. Sad and pathetic.
You’re right. That DePalma movie with Rachel McAdams is quite racy.
Desperate to be a victim, are you? He made a comment about a movie not a religion, dummy. There, now you’ve been victimized, I called you a name. Gnash your teeth and rend your garment accordingly.
Yeah, he made fun of a movie that is about the is about the founding event for an entire faith. Christianity shouldn’t get any favors, but you’re just being a bigot.
Just goes to show that people would rather watch a man flogging a woman, rather than Jesus.
Why? The report made it clear that Fifty Shades will fall short of Passion’s record.
So much for the notion movies must appeal to teenage boys to make money.
Here’s the problem with your comment. It isn’t that teen boys will go see a movie. Its that they’ll go see a movie multiple times. FSG will have the biggest drop in movie history. Perhaps 80% or better next weekend. Its getting savaged review wise. People coming out of the film say its unintentionally hilarious. All the mommies who read it won’t enjoy it in the theater. Its not like they can masturbate in a crowded theater. .
So, yeah. A lot of people are going to see it. But they’ll only see it once, and the vast majority will tell people not to see it again.
Really? I have seen many positive reviews.
Whatsoever, this movie’s gonna make tons of profits with its modest budget of just under $40M. The sequel is already greenlit. Your will have to bear with this movie for the next three year LOL.
I saw it tonight and really enjoyed it. It’s well-made considering the source and Dakota Johnson was great. I do see it dropping big because of upfront demand and the holidays this weekend but it’s an enormous success anyway. The ending seems to bug a lot of people. It did in my audience. But I saw it with a sold out audience that was silent throughout except for the intentional laughs. I have another friend who wants to see it and they want me to go with and I don’t mind seeing it again. I am looking forward to seeing where out goes
Accidentally submitted too soon. Ha. Anyway I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes in the sequels.
If only there were some other way to find out what happens in the Fifty Shades trilogy other than waiting for the movie sequels…
I actually loved the movie, although I made the mistake of seeing it last night at DGA with a roomful of geriatrics. I loved the books.. why? Because its the same dynamic love story as Oliver and Jenny in Love Story, Miss Elizabeth and Darcy in Pride and Prejudice… a hot, entitled hunky guy, and a woman who is unafraid and unintimdated enough to challenge him and put him in his place. THAT is what all the readers have responded to. It really isn’t about the sex. Some of the dialogue last night was chessy.. and I suspect those were the ‘lines EL James insisted on’. Dakota Johnson was fantastic.. who knew??
The fact that you just compared this ‘book’ to Pride & Prejudice saddens me.
After making 90 million, who cares what they drop is next week. Were you on here trumpeting Godzilla’s 70% drop last summer?
What do you care what it drops? Does it make you feel better about yourself predicting a drop in a movie production you had NOTHING to do with?
My god, there’s a new demo – mommy porn.
Curiosity and the “inner goddesses” of all those fandom soccer moms having a “girl’s night out” (fortified with jalapeño poppers and white wine, no doubt) will drive the opening weekend numbers. But once people – via word-of-mouth – learn the film is laughably bad, interest will drop and it’ll fail to be the phenomenon Universal/Focus were hoping it’d be, i.e. repeat viewings, lines around the block, etc.
The fact that none of the Twilight movies received the Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes did’t stop them from becoming the phenomenon or whatever you choose to call them.
Twilight had a completely demographic, namely teens and tweens who are widely known for repeat viewings. 50 Shades won’t have that repeat business because their demographic — soccer moms who actually liked the book — will see it once and go, Oh, okay. As others have noted, this movie will probably see a very steep drop of 80% or more after the curiosity of Opening Weekend passes.
“Fifty Shades author E.L. James has mentioned in interviews how she has been greatly inspired by Stephenie Meyer’s vampire tomes.” Considering that it’s widely known Fifty Shades literally started out as Twilight fan fiction, I’d say that’s the understatement of the year.
Passion vs. “shades of gray”—I’ll watch neither. Leave it to those with no imagination…
If I was single I would be hitting up the wine bars tonight around 11pm. 😁
Kingsman was great. I mean, it isn’t a classic or anything, but it is a fantastic popcorn film. I hope there is a sequel, because it was really good. Everybody in my theater here in NC loved it. Sam Jackson is good in everything. Everyone was cast perfectly. Really enjoyable after noon in a full theater.
I think I’ll save the $14 and just bring up a porno. This movie can’t touch Xvideos.com
Is this Righ or Left wing political movie? Since they labeled and big controversy of American Sniper has a right wing movie. Sheeeshh….:P
Nobody likes this movie it got the worst reviews of any movie in recent memory. It’s truly awful and it will set a record for making the most money of any crappy movie ever. It’s a sure winner for next year’s Razzie Awards.
No, it’s not even Razzie worthy. It’s competently made, but the limitations of the incompetently written source material severely limit any potential for enjoyment. The film’s biggest failing is that it takes itself far too seriously given the source of the story, and it’s just plain boring.
Well, many critics like it. Who cares what you think by the way. This movie gonna make lots of money. The sequels are on their ways….and you have to endure with them for years to come.
Kyle, why don’t you come up with an original comment instead of posting the same slightly re-worded reply to everyone who complains about the movie.
It will still make loads of money, because some many love the books. I read the first book. I think the movie was better, especially Dakota.
Just saw it. Fifty Shades of Awful. When the movie ended the entire theatre burst into uncontrolled laughter. True story. Possibly the worst movie I’ve seen in years. Anal fisting? Really? Do NOT waste your money. No wonder they couldn’t convibe any name actors to star in this train wreck. Prediction: neither of the two “actors” will ever work again. Embarrassing.
Kingman: Secret Service was a good movie! I also can’t believe the person above compared Fifty Shades to the love story in Pride and Prejudice. Seriously! Shaking my head over that one. People can be really clueless.
Saw fifty shades of grey. Should break records. It was a good movie. No complaints about it.
Fifty shades of grey is a bestselling movie and book tie in. Its a movie that will grab your attention and if you like the book you will enjoy the movie. Still 50 shades of grey is an obession for those who’ve read the book in defense. Potc is about our leader and savior Jesus christ. Its popular to the planet. Fifty shades of grey will be remembered by certain groups and fan clubs. I also went to see kings man, it was my kind of movie. I giggled several times and I was shocked by the swearing but hey lots of actors swear in movies because their world is doomed. Still I had a lot of fun watching kings man: the secret service.
PoTC was also a movie based on a bestselling piece of fiction.
I see that cynics and puritans make up this readership. Neither qualified to identify what makes a relationship work, or evolved enough to understand that women have a right to fantasize about whatever it is they wish.
Yeah make this a woman’s rights issue. Instead of a moral depravity issue.
I’m sorry. But all I have to say about this is “Oh pulleeezze.” If you’re talking “relationships,” don’t bother with Fifty Shades . . . An overhyped, silly movie that people went to see out of curiosity. It has no big cultural ramifications.
Well as a woman, I have the right to say this movie is degrading trash, and I’m in no way a puritan.
It’s rather disturbing to see such interest in a movie about emotionally damaged characters. And, even more disturbing is how WOMEN seem to be falling for the theory that sadomasocistic behavior is somehow ‘romantic’ and ‘sensual’. Ask some women who’ve been victimized by this brutal form of anti-social psychosis and I’m sure the stories would be shocking — not ‘sensual’ as told by those who want to sell books and movie tickets.
It’s hard to believe that there’s a generation of young women who are niave enough to buy into this patriarchal propaganda. One might surmise that ‘this’ generation of young women must be very sexually unsatisfied as to seek out such dangerous ‘fantasies’ to become aroused.
Word to the viewers — be careful what you ask for. I’m sure that the news media will be reporting a strong uptick in violence against women in the near future. Remember, there are an awful lot of ignorant people who blur the lines between reality and fantasy. In this case, that blurred line will guarantee that women become victims. It’s shameful actually.
The S&M subject matter (which is very mildly presented in the movie) is just a hook for the fantasy of a ‘OMG he’s so hot!’ young billionaire falling for a meek, plain, financially struggling college student. It’s a marketing angle for a story which is simply a ‘someday my prince will come’ tale which is one of the most common storylines in existence. There really isn’t much socialogical subtext to be read into the book or film’s success, and it’s not going to change what women or men want or expect out of relationships.
Women are not falling for any theory. The movie appeals to a much more basic level of the mind than the theoretical.
…it’s not about S&M in particular that women fantasize but about a strong- rich- handsome man (controlling, but romantic, in love with Her, and only her from the first site and absolutely unconditionally), who’s only “real” flaw is being dominant (to a point of slight perversity) in sex and possessive in life, etc,..
The “book” is atrocious, well at least in the beginning, as I never got past it, bad writing almost physically hurt me, lol, it was too much sadism in that for me already, but I digress….
so the book is atrocious, and the movie looks like meh from previews, but the fact is that there’s a demand for a female fantasy, and there’s a very scarce supply to satisfy it. Apparently the supply is so small, that even a poor quality dud becomes a “phenomenon” (no it’s actually called a phenomenon by sites like this, otherwise it’s just sexual hunger mixed with curiosity, pretty normal female behavior sometimes lol).
Unfortunately, even though it’s representative of high demand, the fact that the firstborn of the genre is such a piece of poop, I see no way it could inspire something of higher quality to come after. All prospective talented erotica writers should thank that greedy James woman for putting a stigma of poor taste on the erotica genre. I mean she literally comes off as greedy, as she just probably didn’t want to pay a writer to put her “idea” in the words, otherwise I see no explanation to the 50 shades of diarrhea that came out of her an got printed all over the world….
Did you just say there’s a scarce supply of movies (or anything for that matter) marketed toward women? News flash, Katy. 99.9% of every product ever advertised, was advertised with a woman buyer in mind. Hollywood is oversaturated with “female fantasy”. You can’t even watch an action flick anymore without a hefty dose of female fantasy thrown in there to entice women to accompany their men to the theater.
No one is ‘victimized’ in a true BDSM relationship. This movie was not based even remotely on a realistic relationship in that lifestyle. A true BDSM relationship is based on trust and respect. This book series bastardizes everything it stands for. Actually talk to people who are in HEALTHY BDSM relationships and you’ll see how happy they are with their partners. For the submissive it’s a sense of release and giving up control when they might have to always be in control in their daily life…for the dominant it’s the feeling of being in control of something when they usually can’t feel that way, a feeling of having someone depend on them & trust them. There is NOTHING brutal about an actual BDSM lifestyle. These women that you say have been victimized weren’t part of the true lifestyle and were probably involved with someone as uneducated about it as the person who wrote these crappy books.
Haters gonna hate, hate, hate …..
Women are BORED with metrosexual femmed up men… that is whats resounding with this audience. I seriously doubt EL James losing sleep over all the hater$$$$
Good to see two non-comic book or gimmick movies do well to start this year in American Sniper and Fifty Shades.
I could see Jupiter Ascending ending its domestic run at around $50 million. It’s already losing steam, and I could see it losing screens in the coming weeks.
I saw the movie the day before its official opening to a packed theater. I (we) loved it! The movie portrayed pertinent points from the first book in a sensual and sexy way. There was unexpected wit and humor. The movie ended exactly like the book, which was no surprise to those that have actually read the trilogy. What I find interesting, is that some people with negative comments, often start with; “I haven’t read the book, but from what the critics are saying…” Dakota Johnson does a great job as Ana evolving from a clumsy/innocent college student to a strong, take charge individual. Jamie Dornan, portrays Christian, exactly as Sam Taylor-Johnson directed – as a private and emotionally detached person. The two of them are attracted to each other, and are negotiating and choosing to explore a relationship that neither one of them have known before. Fans of this franchise, have come to the conclusion that there will be literary snobs, nay-sayers, and ignorance (meaning uninformed or disinterested), and find you just as silly as you do us, especially when you take all of this so serious! It’s just fun fantasy entertainment. I personally, am enjoying this phenomena and apparently 100 million other people are as well. I’m looking forward to the movie sequel… For those of you that are into helicopters crashing, deception, car chases and guns, then perhaps Fifty Shades Darker, will interest you more. I do suggest that you actually read the book before you start criticizing the movie though, keeping in mind it will be another ADAPTATION. I loved WATCHING the important parts of the book and so did a sold out theater. I hope it exceeds expectations!
100 Million People X $9 movie ticket = $900 Million opening? Riiiight. We’re supposed to trust your review isn’t exaggerated? You’re a fan. A fan’s review is about as useful as breasts on a bull.
Admit it. You went because it was the thing to do. I read the books as well. They were manipulative and made the author a great deal of money. But they weren’t good. They were ultimately boring. And they bordered on something else that could become damaging. I’m no prude. But I dislike manipulation.
Yes, 50 shades beats Christ in dollar amounts: $92 to $84 Million. However, ticket prices have increased significantly since 2004: Avg $6 versus approx $10. So, taking that into account: Shades would be 9.2 Million Tickets sold while Christ would be 14 Million tickets sold. I’d say Hollywood and the author really need to get their stories straight. By this type of comparison AND ONLY THIS TYPE OF Comparison can you say one movie beats another movie. By this measure, Shades doesn’t even come close. Then again, it isn’t about coming close, it is about pulling the wool over peoples eyes (pun is somewhat intended)
To compare two movies, which have a 10 year gap, popularity you have to take more than just tickets sold in the equation. Tickets were cheaper, cheaper tickets equals more people at the theater. People went more to the theater back then, it’s a fact. If you want to make a true comparison, you will have to make a study about the movie going habits of the years of the releases, the actual money they made, the price / ticket and the number of ticket. The number of ticket isn’t the ultimate comparison.
