I remember visiting this website once...
It was called Small tweeks make a BIG difference. – Maskcara
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Beauty Basics Brow School Eyeliner School HAC Makeup Popular Tips & Tricks Tutorials
Sometimes makeup can actually hide your natural beauty. Which is not cool. The cool thing is that with the same amount of time and money you are already putting in you can show YOU off rather than going undercover.
There are a few pitfalls that I think most people (me included) have fallen into at some point. SO I thought I would compile some of the repeat offenders to help show the difference. Of course, as I always say, anything that makes you feel more beautiful, works. There are exceptions to every rule:)
Celeste (my little sis) what lovely enough to model for me:
Why? It can be very distracting and can make your eyes look smaller. It is also difficult to get it perfectly straight and close enough to the lash.
What to do instead? I am a big believer in a blended liner (especially on the bottom) I line the eyes in the tear line and the blend with a lighter color of eyeshadow {here} and a smudge brush {here}. This creates a very natural look and frames your eyes beautifully. You can hardly tell there is eyeliner but her eyes are still defined.
Why? Do I harp on eyebrows too much? If so I’m sorry, it’s just, I think they make such a dramatic difference! They are the most natural looking way to bring definition and intensity to your eyes. And when filled and tweezed right they bring balance to your face and they make your expressions look more authentic.
What to do instead? Fill those babies! I used an angled brush {here} and this shadow on Celeste’s. I have this old video {here} that gives you the basics. I’ve been asked to make a new video so I want to know from you guys, what exactly should I address in the new video? What are your biggest concerns with brows?
Why? Now this one is probably just a personal preference of mine. I think white eyeshadow has a tendency to look chalky and unflattering. It can absolutely look beautiful but for the most part I think creamier warmer highlight colors look prettier and softer.
What to do instead? Some of my favorite under brow highlighters are: Lt Bronze {in lorac palette} & the one I used for this makeover was Bubbly {in Stila in the light palette}
Why? Most of the time I think women are timid to use much moisturizer because it makes them feel oily or they worry it will break them out but it is so important for getting your skin to look glowing and vibrant.
What to do instead? Moisturize! I promise it will make a difference. I try to slather some of this {here} on twice a day.
Foundation – More Coverage than you need:
Why? You gotta show off some skin! 🙂 I find most women imagine their skin to be much less perfect than it actually is. They see perfect complexions in magazines and think that more foundation is the way to get there. In all reality no one has perfect skin (not even the babes in Glamour) but when you use too much foundation it can age you and make your skin look dull. Notice how dry Celeste’s face looks in the before image.
What to do instead? I just say to put on foundation thoughtfully, really decide what you actually want to cover up. So often it’s easy to go into autopilot and cover up everything. Instead use the sheerest coverage possible and then spot treat trouble areas with concealer. On Celeste I used Nars Sheer Glow Foundation {here} mixed with moisturizer so it went on very sheer ( I
to show off her cute freckles) then I used my my highlighting concealer under her eyes and around her nose to cover up the redness.
Foundation #2 – Skipping the Blush & Contour:
Why? Now I am not saying you need to contour and blush every day but if you are going to do a full face of foundation it becomes more important. Your face has many different colors on it (ask anyone who’s ever painted a face) when you cover it up with one solid color it can look unnatural and flat. That is where the beauty of blush, highlighting and contouring comes in.
What to do instead? Using the right products in the right places is all it takes. This is the WHOLE reason I designed my line of IIID foundation products! Which give you a sculpted, glowing and flawless finish, without making you look flat or made up! Check it out here or watch the video of how I do it here.
Why? Nude lips are so fun and look amazing with a smoky eye. The problem is that sometimes when you throw on nude lip gloss instead of looking hot your lips look hidden.
What to do instead? I love to contour my lips. I use this {here} lip liner and lightly draw around the outer edge and then use the smudger on the stick to blend it out. You can also use your contour shade around the bottom of your lips to make them look defined. {then I tapped the same Tarte blush {here}I used on her cheeks into the center of her lip to give it a natural looking flush)
Why? Hairspray is made up of a fair amount of alcohol, so it’s really drying. When you layer it on the hair too much it looks dry and dull and lifeless.
What to do? Less is more. Always use the least amount of any product on your hair as possible to get the look you are going for. I understand that some hairstyles require more spray than others. It’s just one of those things that can become a bad habit.
I love this look! I couldn’t stop staring at her the rest of the day. She is just so feminine and beautiful. I don’t think she could possibly look that angelic and sweet if she wasn’t the person she is on the inside. I love her.
I also thought this would make a really pretty bridal makeup tutorial, do you guys agree? or do you think it’s too simplistic?

For eyebrows my complexion and coloring is very light. When I try to fill in my eyebrows it looks like I am wearing eyeshadow on them! I definitely got a few looks at work. Also mine are thin and need the filling. The lightest browns are a bit too brown for me. How do you make it look more natural and less like powdery eyeshadow?
I have the same issue as you, even though I have darker hair – I’m more of a fair complection and find that when I go for a bolder eyebrow look, I tend to look like a man (yikes!). Origins makeup brand has eyebrow “mascara” that I love; it looks very natural and lasts all day. I’m sure they have samples you can try at the store before you buy! Best part is: it’s only $15 and I’ve been using mine for about a year now!
Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely check that out!
Even though I have dark brown hair, I use the Mary Kay blonde brow liner to fill in my brows. It’s not too dark and looks CRAZY natural. nobody can ever tell I fill in. 🙂
I use the blonde mary kay pencil too and my eyebrows are really dark. Looks so natural and the pencil lasts forever.
Check out blonde brow liner. Mary Kay (I know, I feel like such an old lady when I tell people I use Mary Kay, but I swear I’m only 25!) has a great one. I have darker brown hair, but I use the blonde liner because it fills in my patchy eyebrows without looking too “done.” Definitely blend with an eyebrow brush!
This is what I use as well, and I’m 22! It’s great for filling in without looking ‘done’. My mother used to try to fill in my eyebrows with brown eyeshadows or liners and I always felt like it was waaayy over the top and didn’t look at all natural. The blond browliner is amazing.
lol I know lot’s of young girls still have the idea that Mary Kay is “old lady” makeup but I assure you that Mary Kay is very focused on the Y generation and their products are excellent for what you are looking for. 🙂
This is my favorite eyebrow pencil too!! It’s the only one that matches and is a true dark blonde (most blonde pencils are way too brown!) It looks so natural.
I use Sephora’s eyebrow retractable pencil in Nutmeg. It’s the ONLY one that’s worked for me. They have a lighter color too..and you can test it in the store!
Also mac eyeshadow in the color “omega” is great for me, it doesnt darken them but helps to fill in
I have a similar eyebrow problem as a few others about it looking like I’m wearing powder on my brows. But my problem is that my eyebrows are fine shape wise except that the gap between them is too big. I have seen you always fixing this problem on people on Makeover Mondays, filling their eyebrows so they start closer together toward the nose. I try to do this but since I don’t have any eyebrow hair to build on, it just ends up looking like I’m wearing brown eyeshadow for the first little bit of my eyebrows. Any tips for making it look more natural when you’re filling in bald spots?
I have that problem too and use a pencil/shadow combo to fix if. If you take the pencil first and make short strokes to kind of mimic the look of hair then go back over with the powder to sort of fill in the gaps it looks A LOT better than just filling it in completely with powder or a pencil. Just be sure not to press too hard with the pencil when drawing the faux hairs 🙂
I have a few bald spots as well. I’ve tried numerous pencils, powders etc my favorite is Anastasia brow whiz. Super easy for beginners and looks natural. I hold it like a pencil slightly slanted and do light strokes until gaps are filled in then blend with the blender at the end of it. Close runner up would be it cosmetics.
Ugh, I have the very large gap with no hair eyebrow problem sa well.
Cara, did you know hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s (autoimmune thyroid condition) run rampant these days. There are soooo many people with these conditions, and an unfortunate side effect of it….NO EYEBROW HAIR on the outer 1/3 of the eyebrow. So with the large gap between eyebrows, no hair on outer 1/3 AND really sparse brown eyebrow hair on super pale skin, it looks like I have sick caterpillars above my eyes. Eek!
Oh, also, I have just stopped coloring my hair and I am letting all my gray hair be front and center. Eyebrow color choices for those with gray hair would be appreciated! We still want to feel young and put together with our new God-given hair color as well. My gray started when I was 18!
And, I don’t think I have ever seen you feature anyone with short hair in your makeovers. Not everyone has or wants long hair. Remember all those people struggling with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s? We also are losing hair strands left and right and some go shorter just because long hair is harder when you are shedding hair sooo fast. Again, we still want to feel pretty and adore your blog! Share the love and expand on your version of what pretty hair is.. .everything from short pixie crops to bobs and shags and everything in between. I know your blog is about makeup, but the makeup goes on people with hair of ALL lengths!
Thanks for all you do!!! Love your blog. The best!
This is my problem, too. I’m blonde and fair skinned with fuzzy brows. Cara, we’d love to see a tutorial for light-browed ladies!
I second this motion! I have yet to find an article on what to do with light blonde brows! Please do help!
yes yes yes! Help us light browed people 🙂 My hair is red but my eyebrows are super blonde and most photos look like I don’t have eyebrows at all! I currently use a “blonde” eyebrow pencil from MaryKay and it’s a pretty good color match (I think) but it definitely is what you talk about with the pencil looking less natural. I don’t know if a super light brown would look ok with my red hair or what, super lost. I know you’re planning on a redhead makeup post eventually, but maybe you can address redhead eyebrows in your eyebrow one too so we don’t have to wait? 😉
OK I think this one is a popular question! So I will put that in my brow video for sure! In the meantime one of the readers mentioned MAC Omega shadow. It is the color I used on my brows when my hair was light blonde and I loved it! Such a great color for a natural looking brow on blondes!
I use to use Mary Kay auburn pencil when my hair was red. Also, I am very big on dying eyebrowns with just a touch of dark auburn hair color with an equal amount of peroxide on a regular basis. Also, always use brown mascara and eyeliner – never black. Also peach colors in makeup and clothes are wonderful for your coloring. You never have to go with what you have but be sure and match what you have.
As a natural redhead with basically non-visible blonde brows I use the Anastasia powder duo in Strawburn (sometimes called Caramel), just an FYI 🙂
my hair is naturally a light blonde my eyebrows are super blonde also like white no one cant tell I have them, I can never fill in my eye brows because they look harsh and sad thing is my eye brows are not that thick but when I fill them in I look like a cave woman lol brown eye penicils make me look more cave womanish I wouldn’t do brown is I were you
I have strawberry blonde hair with blondish eyebrows and I use the maybelline eyebrow pencil in blonde very lightly over mine and it works great
Mine can look odd when filled in too, try a brow gel. I use ELF’s brow duo, but I usually just use the gel side… use an angled brush to gently sweep the gel on over the hair, don’t push it down on your skin.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! i cannot live without my ELF brow duo wax! eff that eyeshadow crap. it looks blurry and powdery on me!
I am fair and blonde with thin brows also. I use Revlon’s Brow Fantasy. It is a liner at one end and brow ‘mascara’ at the other end. I pencil in, brush through and set. Very natural.
Try using a little bit of Vaseline or something waxy on your brow then use the shadow. It works for me.
I felt the same way when I started defining my brows, but I think (for me) it just looked strange and took some time to get used to. Now it’s been about a year and I think I look super weird without it!! Maybe you need to apply with a lighter hand. When I do mine, I hardly use anything at all, and I apply with with soft, feathery strokes. Then I always blend it out with a fluffy brush to soften the edges.
I’ve been using ELF’s eyebrow kit in medium (they might have a light version, not sure), which comes with a wax and powder and brush duo. $3 at Target!
I am almost platinum blonde and damn near look like a vampire when it comes to skin tone. I also look very fake when I try to fill in my eyebrows with powder. My solution is to use the Just for Men beard and mustache dye on my eyebrows, in light brown. You can mix just a small amount as opposed to mixing a whole bottle like hair color for your head. My eyebrows are legitimately brown after use and it lasts for several weeks, plus it saves me a ton of money over going to the salon to have it done.
I do the same thing. My brows are thick enough on their own, the color is just too light. By using the mustache and beard color, I can color them and forget about it for weeks. Plus, I don’t have to worry about seeing powder or pencil strokes. A friend of mine told me this trick years ago, and it works great!
That’s a brilliant idea! Never thought of that. I always go to the salon for this. Where do you get it?
I’m blonde and fair skinned and have nearly invisible brows. I use Anastasia’s brow pen in universal light (http://www.sephora.com/brow-pen-long-wearing-brow-tint-P219410?skuId=1103647). Looks the most natural on me because I can draw on little hairs that leave no extra texture rather than caking on powder or gel, or drawing too-thick hairs with a pencil. It’s not the cheapest, but it lasts extremely long. I used it almost every day for an entire year before the pen ran out!
This is a great brow powder that I use. I use the shade “blonde” as I have light brown hair and lighter color brows and it blends well. They also have a shade lighter called “shades of grey” which may work better for you. It takes very, very little powder and I use an eye shadow brush to apply it (don’t use the cheap sponge brushes that come with the cheap eye shadow brands.) It is a loose powder so it blends well with this brush and then I take a clean powder brush over my brows to get rid of any excess powder for an even look.
I have dark brown hair but my eyebrows are lighter and thinner so I have the same problem. I use the Maybelline brow pencil in dark blonde and it works great.
They also have a light blonde. It fills in my brows so nicely without overpowering my face and making them stand out.
Have you ever tried tinting your eyebrows?
I always dye my eyebrows and it makes a huge difference! (naturally a light blonde)
I usually just use an eyeliner pencil and smudge it out a lot. Nothing powdery there at all, and eyeliner comes in sooo many colors you can match it to almost any hair shade.
Follow the natural brow line once, twice, three times.. Then smudge and blend, always moving your sponge/fingers WITH the grain. Unless you like fluffy brows, that is.
WOW! Just wow! What a perfect post for me 🙂 Thank [email protected]

Only the single most important beauty trick you will ever hear about! Seriously, this elevated my makeup routine to another level. It’s beyond easy and makes such a huge difference.
HAC- Highlight and Contouring. -finding the right tones can be difficult. Ask the girls at Sephora to help you. Watch Caras video here. Its the best http://www.maskcara.com/maskcara/2012/11/10/hac-yourself-flawless/
Amazing! Celeste looks ready to hit the red carpet. And I’m wondering why you aren’t a make up artist for celebrities!
I love how here eyes turned out…I have to try your brow and eye liner techniques. And I love the soft glow on her cheekbones, I have to check out what you used. Beautiful job, Cara!
Such a wonderful article, thank you! And thanks for the amazing one about fighting Brassiness, so relevant!
For brows, I’ve never ever filled them in, basically always ignored them! I worry about the wrong color, people noticing they are filled, and the fill fading over the day.
I would love to see something addressing the opposite brow issues. My brows are enormous and bushy, and while I fully embrace the thick brows, my problem is trimming them. I cannot manage without them looking horrible and “cut”. I’ve tried it all, they are just too bushy. I feel like I have gorgeous Kim Kardashian brows under there, but they are just too thick! I can send pics if needed.
Mine are too! Once a month, I go to an eyebrow place at the mall that specializes in threading. She will do whatever you want , I just let her do her thing. My brows are full and perfectly groomed and it really sets the eyes off. The rest of the month I follow her lines. I use a dry sample mascara brush ( the ladies at Sephora will give them to you, love them!) to comb them up above the line and trim if needed. For the most part, I use clear mascara to keep them in place til I see her next. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Thanks Becky! I may have to try that. I’ve never done threading and haven’t gotten them waxed in about 10 years, with 3 little kiddos at home, just tweazing my own is all I have time for, but I think I could manage once a month.
you can always get a electric trimmer they were first a as seen on TV thing many years ago but now they sell them at walmart and they have a special eyebrow attachment it allows you to shorten the long hairs. and then you can take to attachment off and get the in between areas http://www.walmart.com/ip/Conair-Ladies-2-In-One-Trimmer-1-ct/10322776
I think it would make a great bridal tutorial. It looks almost exactly what my friend and I were talking about doing for my wedding in June!
I am beginning to think that there is some super gene in your family that creates gorgeous females! Seriously. She looks so beautiful.
Haha thank you so much! It makes me feel like the ugly duckling around my house! My brothers are pretty cute too! It’s not very fun to have cute brothers in highschool though, all my friends were always coming over just to see them!
I LOVE these ideas. Gotta admit I am guilty of many of these especially the hairspray! (Thank you 1980’s!) it’s really a less is more concept and she is really lovely in her more natural state. Going to try all of these…right after I watch your eyebrow video! Thanks Cara! Martha C.
Spot on! Another amazing post 🙂 you couldn’t be more right
I think it would make a fantastic bridal look. It’s gorgeous!
Maybe this is easy stuff for everybody but I have a hard time with lining my eyes. It never looks natural. Maybe I just dont know what products to use but I would love some help in that area. (Like you need more tutorial ideas)
Hi Erica! I know I’m not Cara, but maybe this can help- I find if you are having trouble with liner looking strange, the best thing you can do to still get some definition (while minimizing any weirdness) is to smudge, smudge smudge! It keeps the liner from looking harsh, and is a very forgiving way to tone down any weirdness. Also, if you are fair skinned try using a color other than black, at least until you get more comfortable with it. AND… I always encourage my clients to keep the liner away from the inner corner of your upper lid, unless you are going for a dramatic look. If you think of your eye in thirds, you want the liner to be its thickest at the outer corner of your eye (on the lid), and very minimal towards the inner corner. Just my personal preference, hope that makes sense!
It seems like you are not a lone with this, it’s been a really popular question on this post so I will get going on that video!
Can you show how to line the waterline? I’ve always been afraid to do it. Tutorials with multiple types of faces in one video would be awesome. Show a range of techniques of how it (whatever video subject is) is done differently on different faces. I also have sparse eyebrows set wide apart and oily skin to boot. Afraid making them look closer together would fade during day or come off haphazardly because of oil. Even with filling in with powder (bare minerals loose eyebrow powder) they disappear or don’t show up much, especially in photos.
I like to use a charcoal color instead of black liner, and I do it before the eye shadow. I line my eyes first, smudge them, and then put on the eye shadow to blend it in better.
I just have to say, after seeing several of your sisters in your blog…your parents made stunning children! Thank you for your very helpful information weekly. I can’t tell you what a difference it has made for my make up routine. 🙂
AVON has a great brow pencil for blondes, I highly recommend it! And it’s on SUPER sale right now, $1.99! Might be worth a try! http://shop.avon.com/product.aspx?pf_id=31079

I second that- you and your sisters are so darn pretty!
As for eyebrows, I feel like mine are pretty full and dark, so I’m afraid that if I fill them in I’ll look like a clown. The eyebrows you do are always fantastic, so maybe I’m just intimidated. I love love love your tutorials, by the way! I watch them with earphones while my baby naps and they have really helped me come out of those early mom frumpies! Thank you!
This would be a great bridal makeup tutorial!!
Celeste looks BEAUTIFUL!!! Those eyes!!! Ahh!! Love it! Great job Cara 🙂 Love this post! I had a good laugh becuase I have definitely fallen victim to all of these blunders. Thanks for the tips, as usual.
What a difference! In the before photo she looks like one of those girls who doesnt really care and is tuck in the 90’s. But he after she looks bangin’! I definatly give her a 10! She looks great!
While reading this I just kept thinking YES, YES, YES (i sounded like that old herbal esseces commercial)!!! is it rude to link this to a few peoples facebook walls?? Its really a shame when pretty people make these mistakes and make themselves look trashy and ghetto, such an easy fix! actually that is something i would love to hear your take on- how to let someone know they are doing unflattering things to themself!
You crack me up, as soon as I started reading the YES, YES I was totally picturing a herbal essences commercial! haha seriously where did that stuff go? It smelled so good! haha I totally understand the frustration of seeing your beautiful friends attempt to cover it up with makeup but I think it can be a REALLY touchy subject. If anything try to point out her beauty. Like if she has pretty skin but wears a ton of foundation, point out how gorgeous her skin looks. Continue doing that and showing her cool and easy techniques when it comes up. It might not make much of a difference at first (us ladies get pretty attached to our makeup routines!) but after a while, you might instill enough confidence in her to show herself off a little bit!
They just brought the old herbal essences back! I was so excited, I used to love that stuff!
Cara, i have what i guess you would call “layered” eyebrows where there is almost blonde hairs over the top. It wasnt until recently that i learned you can trim your brows! Maybe you can add how to properly trim them in your video??
I know exactly what you’re talking about! It’s on the list for my brow video! Thanks!
Could you please do a tutorial on how to “fix” blonde’s eyebrows? THANKS!! :))))
I absolutely love, love, love how you do what you do! She looks so natural and gorgeous! The ‘other’ way looks almost dead and lifeless. You really do know how to bring out the inner beauty on people! Thanks for the great tips!
My question about eyebrows: I have very dark hair and eyebrows. My eyebrows are also very thick. Not quite Camilla Belle, but close! Should I be filling them in with anything? Another question: About HAC, I have VERY fair skin. What is a good bronzer I could use that isn’t too shimmery?
Hi Jessica! If they are very defined themselves I wouldn’t worry about filling them! You are a lucky one! I have a post on HAC for fair skin here: http://www.maskcara.com/maskcara/2012/12/19/faq-for-hac/
I love this! I think it could work for bridal, but depending on when the wedding is, you might want to do a more pinky lip. Just to bring out the youthful pink 🙂
This is a good post, you’re right we’ve all done it at some point. I have NEVER been able to blend my eyeliner like you do without looking like a total weirdo. Need to work on that.
great question (I’ll add that to the post) I used the liner called “Damsel” Which is a soft dark brown retractable liner that came with my Stila In the light Palette.
Unbelievable difference! I loved this post – can’t wait to try out some of these techniques!
As far as my concerns for eyebrows, I have a problem finding the best color. Either it’s too warm or too harsh. Also, what about when you change your hair color? My natural hair color is a medium brown but I usually have it blonde (and it’s short). So what color would be best not to clash with my hair but also still give my eyebrows definition?
Hi Cara:) Your blog has changed my life! I am looking forward to your new video on eyebrows. 3 months ago when I found you on Pinterest is when I became inspired to redo my face. I bought every product you said to and spent some major bucks at Sephora. My brows where severely over plucked. Sephora happened to have an Anastasia (brow chic) representative there and she asked me if she could do my brows. She totally changed my face by fixing my brows. I bought the regrowth serum and it only took me 3 months to regrow my brows. Now I fill them in how you taught me and it’s sounds cliché but it really has changed me. When you do your next video on brows it would be cool to see some regrow tips and how to cope until they grow back. I can’t thank you enough for your blog! ps…I voted for you and I hope you win girl!
Celeste is absolutely beautiful!! You truly bring the natural beauty out of the all the women you work with. I am so thankful for your talent, and your passion to help others to see and believe in their own beauty. Thank you for everything girl!!
I would like to see a video on how to fix eyebrows that are too far apart… when i was younger i over-tweezed and my eyebrows are a little too far apart, i think i do an OK job in making them look naturally closer together but i have a hard time with making my eyebrow makeup stay put for a whole day… help!!
you are a make-up goddess. LOL, but seriously.she looks like two completely different people in those photos! i think you should have a section on your page (or maybe a contest?) where girls can submit a picture of themselves and you can give them personal tips on what kind of look/makeup you think they should try to use! love your blog!! 🙂
That sounds like a great idea I second!
That is a good idea! Submit two photos – one of yourself with fresh face (zero makeup), and another with your current makeup routine applied!
This is literally the best Public Service Announcement ever. The difference between the two pictures is astonishing. She looks SO beautiful and natural in the second picture! Keep doin’ what you’re doin’. You’re amazing.
I retired the eyebrow treatment and they looked so good, but by the end of the day all of it had written off. Any tips to help them stay pretty all day?
I also second the need for tips on blonde eyebrows. Mine are very light and thin and everytime and every product I’ve tried just leaves them looking worse than before. I also tend to find all the makeup for blonde eyebrows ends up looking orangey. Help!
Great tips! Would you ever consider doing a tutorial about makeup for freckle faced girls? I love my freckles and the only makeup tutorials I ever find online are how to cover them up!
I’m not sure if this has been mentioned, but I’d love a tutorial about how to pluck and shape eyebrows. Mine are a crazy shape and don’t really match naturally. Thanks so much for all your amazing advice and how tos! I’ve learned so much from you!
Wow!! She’s is beautiful! Yes to the bridal tutorial but could you please help us Mother of the Brides!! Older but still want to look our best…..Thanks Cara I have just recently found you and I am now addicted xo
Unbelievable- I wouldn’t even know it’s the same person!
I’d like to see you show a tutorial with filling brows in using pencil.
What about a tutorial on how exactly to do the eyeliner? I’ve watched all of the tutorial vids (I think) and you always seem to just slap that stuff on with a steady hand barely even looking in the mirror and I CANNOT figure it out.
Yes please!!! I was going to ask about this. I’d love to see a tutorial on the eyeliner technique you described on Celeste. I’m so lost on what to blend/smudge. When I try, it looks like half my eyeliner is missing! I’d love to learn 🙂
I really need help with this too. I don’t know how to get the eye defined without smudging it into raccoon eyes!
Ok, me too!!! 🙂 I always try to do my liner like Celeste’s “after” liner and usually end up looking way more like the “before!” Also, which Stila in the Light eye shadow color did you use to blend after lining the tear line?
I can’t stand harsh eyeliner ON ANYONE. I wish more women realized how bad it looks. Thanks for this!
Ok, I am new here and can’t find any thoughts on all this BB Cream and now Clinique has a CC Cream. Cara, do you have any thoughts or tips on this? I like the idea of sunscreen but the colors are very limited.
I am with Martha on this one – a blog posting on BB creams vs. CC creams, please … ;-). I’m also hoping to get the BB cream vs. foundation coverage article from you. I don’t feel the need to use foundation but for a special night out, should I at least consider a BB/CC cream? Good idea, Martha. 🙂
CC creams have more coverage than BB creams, if that helps…
The before and after photos don’t even look like the same person! And, she is beautiful! LOVE reading your tips
I have a nice general shape to my eyebrows, but the color of them is not very dark, that or they are not as thick (not meaning wide) as I’d prefer. Much like Celeste’s eyebrows. My hair is as dark as you can get with out it being black, and I think it looks best when my eyebrows are darker for reasons like you said, and obviously bc it matches my hair. I do fill them in with a dark brown eyebrow pencil every day. But I have also had them dyed (unaware that it was temporary dye) which cost me 20 bucks and faded within 2 weeks! I would like to know if you recommend dying your own with a permanent color the same as your hair color? Is it safe, recommended, and if so do you have any tips on this? Any input is MUCH appreciated!! Thank you!!
I have super thin and super light (almost invisible!) natural eyebrows. Ultimately, they need filled. Always. Buut, I also have redhair and very pale skin. Sometimes when I try to fill them I look like a clown. 🙁 I have no idea what color/products to use on them because even the lightest colors are to brown to match my hair. Can redheads use browns??? Any suggestions on how to keep them from looking like I used a brown Sharpie??
I had a similar problem, I’m a redhead with pale skin and my eyebrows get very light in the summer and pretty much disappear. I was using light browns and just wasn’t thrilled with it. Someone suggested trying the lightest shade of the Benefit Brow Zings (http://www.benefitcosmetics.com/product/view/brow-zings#BVRRContainer) and it’s made such a difference. It has more red undertones than most of the other products to so it doesn’t look harsh against my hair, just a nice auburn color.
Thanks Hillary, I’ll definitely check this out! I’m in the same boat as you two! I’d love some pointers from Cara!
I also have red hair and very fair skin (not many frekles which makes me look ghostly!) I have found the best thing is to tint/dye my brows (I just do it at home with a DIY eyelash/eyebrow tint kit in brown, I leave it on for not even 5 min- just start by putting it on then wipe off after 30 sec and build up the time til you get the right colour). You could probably pay to get it done if you are nervous. Just ask for a light/medium brown. Then once they are dyed it looks much more natural when filling in. To fill in I use Masquerade pressed matte eyeshadow in BM09 (shadow brown) but I think the best thing is the brush I use, Masquerade IceBrush Collection #06 Eyebrow. I just do it with a very light hand, Hope this helps 🙂
My eyebrows are naturally very, very thick. You can’t see any skin through them like you can on most people but they are naturally a decent shape. My hair is very, very red. My eyebrows are red too but pretty pale. I have trouble darkening in them in a way that doesn’t look cartoonish.
Also, when you have naturally tick brows with a nice shape it’s hard to know how much cleaning up to do. I’d love to expose my brow bone a little more but I’m afraid of messing with what nature gave me. (Does any of this make sense? It’s hard to describe.)
That is exactly what I wonder most with brows! Is how do you know exactly how much to pluck and what size would most suit your face..
YES! My problem is, I love the shape and thickness of my brows but I feel like they’re too low and kind of hood my eyes (oh and they’re blonde, but I commented above for that haha). I don’t know how to make them appear higher! Suggestions Cara?
I think it would look perfect for a wedding! Love all the tips! I was definitely doing eyeliner wrong! xxx
you make getting dolled up so much fun!!! I look forward to using all your tips and trick 🙂 I haven’t tried just doing the HACing without foundation, could you do a tutorial on that?
I am always afraid of using the wrong shade for my eyebrows. Could you offer any advice on this? Love all your tips!!!
Such a great post, your so right, I was trying to explain this to my boyfriend but he just didn’t get it hahaha I love reading your blog everyday you always have such good post, and always teach me so much. Thanks for taking the time to educate me
If I were to show this to my bridal makeup artist, would that be considered rude? Like “I don’t trust that you know what you’re doing?”
Not at all!! It’s YOUR wedding, girl! I know that some make-up artists will go all out on makeup, and if your personality is more simple and lovely, you’ll definitely want her to know that. Good luck 🙂
I agree with Jennie, it is your wedding day. I wore too much makeup and have never liked my wedding photos because of it. That was 40 years ago! Make up and hair really “date” the photos but brides with their hair up, no bangs and the natural makeup shown here have photos that are timeless.
I think this look could be great for a wedding tutorial. A lot of women want to wear a lot of makeup for their wedding, but for those who go for the more simple-but-pretty look, like me, and who don’t like to wear a ton of makeup very often, this look could be perfect. Tutorial? 🙂
I’m blonde and have next to nothing eye brows! It is difficult to fill the brows without making them look painted. I’ve tried shadow but pen is actually better. Tips are welcome!!
My biggest concern with brows is how to help them grow in! Especially if you spent the better part of your high school and college years over plucking them. I’m definitely a fan of filling them in with powder; but how can we help them actually grow back?
I would LOVE to see a bridal tutorial from you! I’ve taken bits and pieces from your tutorials (from the Pin-Up look to your poor man’s Adriana Lima!) for my big day, but I would really love to see what you think embodies bridal beauty, along with tricks to make it camera-ready. 🙂
Thank you for making us all feel beautiful in our own skin by finding ways to enhance what we were given. And keep those videos coming! It makes me feel like I am hanging out with you over some coffee.
When I was in my early 20’s I had my eyebrows and eyeliner tattooed on. I never had much for eyebrows and I was working nights so I had my eyeliner done thinking it will save me time getting ready for work. Any suggestions? I try to cover the black liner up with brown liner or shadow. I can send pictures if you would like to see. Thanks for any suggestions you may have. By the way, I am now 45.
WOW. SIMPLY WOW!!!!!!! One of your most amazing-est transformations IMHO. Thank you!!!! <3<3 <3
Loved this post! I am definitely at fault for over applying foundation. I have very red cheeks so I like to try and get some balance in place. I also use a powder bronzer over the top of liquid foundation so I always figure I will be breaking out. Have you dyed your eyebrows before? I have very light brows and my hair is dyed brownish-black so I have to fill in my brows to get a “normal” look. Do you use any hair masks to maintain a healthy look? Your amazing and I look forward to visiting your blogs when I get my emails =)
So pretty! I think this is perfect wedding makeup, radiant natural beauty. So, so pretty 🙂
My friend looks exactly like the picture on the left it is crazy!! She does everything you say not to do even the hairspray and she won’t listen when her friends try to give her advice. To each their own I guess!
I think I’ve definitely been guilty of one or a few of these faux pas! Really shows how minor tweaks can make all the difference. Beautiful transformation!
I think the biggest issue I have with eyebrows is knowing just exactly what size they should be to most flatter my face! When I look at some celebs they have a little bolder brows but then others have a little more smaller brows! Hope this makes sense? I understand how to make the shape for my face -like the arch, but just wonder how do you know what size would flatter your face the most?! I guess just trial and error??
OMG you are awesome! So glad I found you on Pinterest! You’ve renewed my love of makeup!!! This is a great post – she doesn’t even look like the same person! The other mistake people make (still!) is lip liner that is too dark, brow color too dark and lipstick too dark for thin lips. Savanna Guthrie on the Today show is a good example if wrong lip color. Granted, there is a lot more wrong w/ her makeup: blue eyeshadow, not blended shadow, liner too thick/dark/unblended, etc. I have become obsessed w/ analyzing local newscasters makeup, most look atrocious! Best tip I can give is Blend, Blend, Blend!!! Personally, I would love a post on filling in blonde brows, they are by far the trickiest! Colors are either too warm(red/orange), too dark or too ashy (grey). I use a pencil (very well blended so not harsh) but live the look of a powder filled brow. Problem is, I feel I need to shape and define them w/ pencil and then adding the powder also is too much. Guess I just haven’t found a good color combo yet. What do you use on blondes? Also interested in how to contour: what products to use, how to make it look natural, etc. The picture of you with your nose contoured vs not, is unbelievable and I want to give it a try!
I would love to contour my nose but how do I do that without accentuating my close set eyes?
I definitely don’t think it is too simple for bridal. I think bridal makeup should show off the bride’s natural beauty. Anything too drastic can make you look back twenty years later and regret the fads. Classy is always pretty 🙂 Thanks for your posts, it looks like you are blowing them away at Allure! CONGRATS!
I think this simple look is perfect for a bridal tutorial. I always look at those for my makeup because I like natural yet pretty looks and this is definitely one of those. You do such a great job and the links to the products makes it so simple. Thanks!
Beautiful comparison! I never knew how important eyebrows are until I started watching “What Not to Wear”. They correct the eyebrows in almost every makeover they do! It seems like they do a very subtle, smudged-out eyeliner most of the time too.
I didn’t read all 85 comments so sorry if someone asked, but my eyebrow question is how to get the right color. Eyebrows that are done look amazing but I don’t even dare to try it. I don’t wan to walk around looking like a weirdo who drew on her face.
I love this post! About the eyebrows – I think it would be helpful if you showed how to do eyebrows on another person other than yourself. Preferably someone that really needs them shaped (or somene that has super thin ones or super bushy ones). haha. Thank you! You’re great!
I do think this is beautiful, I just think that for me, personally, on a wedding day I’d want to absolutely wow by doing something different from an everyday look. Something absolutely glamorous.
I love makeup, but my brows scare me, I always am afraid it looks too fake, product suggestions please
Love this look!!! In addition to another eyebrow video would you mind doing a video or pics on the eyeliner. I have so much trouble getting that look. Smudging just ends up looking like a mess! Thanks so much!
Amazing transformation! I use way too much black eyeliner and can’t seem to line my bottom outer lid, but instead stick doing the inner lid because it just looks better to me. I would love it if there was a way for us to send in a picture with our current makeup look and you could somehow “fix” it with photoshop and tell us how to do it differently. If only we could all get it done in person by you!
You, your mother and sisters are soooo beautiful. Lovely family!
Wow! She doesn’t even look like the same person! Her original makeup look was doing her absolutely no justice. Gorgeous girl.
I have very sparse eyebrows. They’ve always been like this. I use powder and then pencil but they look fake looking and at the end of the day I don’t have a lot of anything but smudges.
Omg I saw a girl the other day who had one too much face makeup on and had fully lined black eyeliner and I just wanted to tell her so badly to switch what she was doing! But I had to stop myself. Hahaha I think the eyeliner thing is something a lot of people need to know!
you could spray paint your eyemakeup and eyebrows like my cousin maria gonzoles
Shut up Jose, I do not. They are tattooed on mi amiega manuela did them, i’m so dashingly beatiful, try out my taco kisses
So Actually I did go up to that girl I saw the other day and I told her what up with her makeup and she was all like dammmn girl you so smart. I was was like ohhh ya makeup is my thing, and I love it. boom shaka laka!
This makes me want buy all the make up in the world and sell it with my most powerful operating system (windows 8).. dont delay buy today
Thanks for the great post! I am sure its on here somewhere but I can’t find it 🙂 what color did you use for her blush?
I just started following your blog and I love it. I was just thinking yesterday how you should make a post about common beauty mistakes and I check my email and bam there it is. I started filling in my eyebrows simply because I started reading you blog and think it does pull my face together more. But I haven’t found anything related to the shape. You should make a tutorial on different shaped eyebrows for different shaped faces. I have thicker eyebrow and have been afraid to thin them out a bit, on my round face.
Great post and tips! I have very dark and full eyebrows and I think for me it also looks good if I do not fill the brows, but then the make-up has to be natural too or otherwise it looks undone. I also had the same questions and problems with brows that people have commented here: if you fill brows with eyeshadow does it fade or does it look too done, too unnatural. I have tried different brow filling methods and it took awhile to find one that wont look too harsh etc, but it is as simple as this: make sure your brows are great shape to begin with (lots of great tutos online how to plug your brows correctly), use good quality eyeshadow so the colour won’t fade, use colour that is lighter that your brow colour (my brows are dark brown and I use middle or light brown) so that it looks natural and you wont look this crazy mean lady with thick dark brows (especially if you have full brows this is important) and also I like to either dab a tiny tiny bit of vaseline or then water to my brow brush and brush my brows with that when I’m done with the filling to make brows stay in shape and look more natural (may look unnatural if the brows look too powdery after the eyeshadow) 🙂
Oh and didn’t know you can smudge the tear line liner with eyeshadow. Must try that! Always when I try to line the lower lashline (tear line) I end up looking like a crazy goth lady 😀 Don’t get me wrong, some goth ladies are gorgeous, but I’m not a goth lady so I prefer not to look like one 😀
I’m so glad to see these simple issues addressed. Thanks for the tip on the nude lips. I’ve tried it on myself in the past, but had the problem with my mouth disappearing. I don’t have plump lips and they are flush (in color) with my skin tone. I will have to give that a try.
I actually switched hairsprays to one without alcohol because since I sometimes clean my art brushes with it to get out ALL the dried paint color I figured it striped the high & low lights I was paying someone to put in my hair! Your sister looks lovely and would make a beautiful bride 🙂
OH my word!! WHAT. A. DIFFERENCE. I LOVE it! She looks amazing! Thanks for the great tips, and I’ll be putting them to good use! 😀
P.S. – “tweAks” not “tweEks” 😀 http://www.thefreedictionary.com/tweak
Whenever I put liner or any kind of makeup in my tear line it generally always manages to slide off into the corner of my eye at the tear duct area and pools their and looks bad! Is there a way to stop that from happening?
was wondering if anyone has advise for people who have scarred eyebrows, I had over 30 stitches (thank you MR. Plastic Surgery on call at ER!!!))) and it seems like even when i shape and fill the one is always a bit odd!!! I certainly am no artist so I am open for all suggestions!!
I just found your blog thanks to Pinterest and I gotta say -I’m in love! I’ve spent the last two hours practically reading every post you’ve ever written! Keep up the great job you’re doing! Love from Sweden!
love the look too but i think as bridal makeup it is too simple. if this were for a wedding, i’d like to see a tad bit more of a dramatic eye, since that’s where everyone would be looking. i would say this would be a great look for a rehearsal dinner or engagement party. thanks for giving us another great blog entry!
Amazing job! I can’t believe it is the same girl. I am big on eyebrows, too. I think a lot of women overlook them, but they are important. Another thing is teeth. I know it’s not make up, but teeth can make such a huge difference. Thanks for the post..
[…] I am a devoted fan of make-up artist Kara of Maskara she has been on fire with her beauty posts lately, she has a great one for make-up for girls with glasses and a beautiful easy fresh-faced beauty look here. […]
I just descovered your blog and I’m so happy I did! you do amazing tips and makeovers!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE this blog! You have a new fan 🙂

I have hooded eye lids that smudge every kind of eyeshadow/ eye liner I have tried, other than liquid eye liner from maybelline. I LOVE the look in the “Do this” pic, but I have only done the “Not this” side!!! Can you give me any tips for hooded eyes?
Love this. I wish you could come and make me over! I’m getting older and have the marionette lines around my mouth. Anyway i can hide those and the HUGE bags that appeared out of nowhere under my eyes! Ick! Love your blog and can’t wait to see what you surprise us with next! Oh! And good luck with the contest. I’m voting daily!!
I keep looking at this post and am so amazed at the HUGE dramatic difference…I’m going to try the HAC I’m terrible at make up but I’ll give it a go.
Cara, I use sunscreen everyday, but lately been needing moisturizer. But which one goes first, sunscreen(neutrogena ultra sheer) or the moisturizer (neutrogena naturals)??
There are a lot of moisturizers that have sunscreen in them, if you are willing to try something new. I know all of the moisturizers that Rodan + Fields makes have sunscreen in them. The one I like is the Soothe Mineral Sunscreen, which you can get here: https://lauracrigger.myrandf.com/Shop/Product/SOSS050
This new makeup also makes her face look thinner! So cool
Cara, i couldnt stop posting a comment! it is AMAZING!
I have to request eyebrow tips for blondes. My brows are very light colored and I have trouble finding filler colors that aren’t dark. I’m too afraid to try the dark colors. I think it will look too obvious.
I have a lot of questions about eyebrows… I’ve probably spent several HOURS reading about/watching tutorials on eyebrows over the last few weeks!! I am trying to grow mine back in but they are too short, I’ve over-plucked in the past and am paying for it! When I say too short, I mean then don’t come close enough together and they don’t go far enough out. I can fill inside the brow where there is some hair ok, but going beyond the hair (where I really need it!) looks horrible! Everyone says to use eye shadow but I have black eyebrows and feel like if the shadow extends beyond my brow hair it looks bad, not as strong of a color as my natural brows and obviously drawn/painted on. What can I do? Yours always look so natural, is that because it’s over a video or can you actually draw on brows that look real in person?
Yes, i have a question about eyebrows. As a makeup artist, I’m actually really good at shaping other’s eyebrows, but my own… I suck! I barely have any eyebrow left anymore, so I have to draw them in every day, but I can’t get that angle/arch look because mine are actually more rainbow-shaped. I feel like if I tried to draw in that arch… I’d look un-natural. What do you do if you have to draw in your eyebrows but have a different natural shape?
I love how her eyes turned out, I’m going to incorporate a few of your suggestions into my daily makeup experiments! Thanks 🙂
I love how at the very end of your article, you say that you “couldn’t stop staring” at your friend Celeste. I felt the very same way yesterday at a boudoir shoot I worked at, making over 10 pretty girls…. At one point, I’d just made up one of the models, Heidi, and then we all went to eat some lunch before she did her shoot. I hope I didn’t creep her out, because I couldn’t stop looking at her at the table, at how gorgeous she looked! And perhaps I was admiring my own work as well. 😉 Great job as always, Cara.
This is my first time on your blog, and I’m hooked! This was a perfect make-up post: super informative, great pictures, and lots of easy guidelines. The makeover is really gorgeous, and would be great for a wedding if it was relatively natural and casual: outdoors in summer, on a beach, etc!
Thanks for this awesome tutorial!! I am still so scared to fill my eyebrows and still do not know how to pluck them that well. I have watched a bazillion videos but my eyebrows are seriously different shaped than the ones I see!! But this tutorial has given me another boost of confidence and maybe I will try to shape them better and fill them 🙂
One of the things I have a hard time is foundation. How do you put it on without slathering it? Most tutorials start with it already on.
This changed my whole makeup routine! The first time I contoured my SiS said I definately lost weight and my face looked so much skinnier! Yay!
My cheeks have ALOT of natural color. If I get a little hot, or embarrassed etc. they go even more red and I get so self conscious. I know a little color is good, but not the kind of color I have going on! Haha. I don’t wear a lot if makeup, and when I do I try to keep it pretty natural. I try to tone my cheeks down with foundation but I don’t like looking like I have foundation on. Is there a foundation you would recommend or how can I tone them down a little without completely getting rid of the color but not feel like I have a cherry face….
Have you ever tried NARS Pure Radiatn Tinted Moisturizer? It’s awesome and fits what you’re looking for! It gives you a little more coverage than most TM’s, doesn’t make oily skin look oilier (YAY), and softens the look of any discoloration or patchiness. Just thought I’d share since I started using it and it’s been wonderful! 🙂
Goregeous!! I love the tips too!! I have been playing with HAC since finding your blog in January! 🙂
My question is about HACing on top of BB cream or just moisturizer. It seems whenever I try this my blush and contour color (bahama mama) don’t go on very smooth and I look dirty. Then I go back to using my bare minerals and then trying to HAC on top and it seems like too much. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Fantastic post!! This is what great bloggers do. This post made me think back to some of my blunders (copper lipstick, harsh black metallic liquid liner on the bottom lashes, having my brows overwaxed to within a hair of their life)! Thanks for a fresh and thoughtful guide on how to do it right. Celeste is a beauty!
Thank you so much for this post. I’ve been reading your blog for quite a while now and you have inspired me to start my own. I’m no where as profesional as you, mind that. I’ve got to say that this post is one of my favorites so far. It’s the small things that make such a huge difference!
First of all, I love the play on maskCARA.. very cute 🙂 I just came across this post (first time on your website) and I love these tips! I’m no makeup artist but you’re so clear when you explain and you offer products to use.. it’s great! I can’t wait to buy and try everything. Keep it up! xoxo
Also, when you use too much makeup on your upper lip, it makes the hair appear more (EVERY WOMAN HAS HAIR THERE!) you can see it on the left picture, but not on the right, dont make that mistake ladies! :]
The grammar and spelling on this blog in general is actually shocking.
Amazing difference! I couldn’t even tell it was the same girl!! Thank you so much for the great tips. I’m sharing this on my fb page. Little Bit
I love the after! She looks so much more natural and less “made up.” I don’t see why girls think they need to cake on the makeup?? They just look AWFUL when they do. Not very pretty.
this is amazing, such common mistakes and perfectly illustrated!
wow.. what a difference! but all these steps look do difficult… 🙁 I stopped using eyeliner on my lower eye-lids…

This is great! I’d love to see more info on which eyeliner color you used as well as a video! Thanks!!
I usually use eyeliner all around my eyes, but not as heavy as what you showed. But I figured I would try out the softer look. I thought my eyes needed that definition around them, but I followed what you did, and it turned out great! Thanks for the tips!!
very cool to read, I dont wear alot of makeup but I hate seeing pretty women, layer it on and look aweful!
Cara, I really liked this post and your videos as well. You say things simply, which is what the reader needs, especially a reader like me, who is just getting more into makeup. I am loving your blog so far, all your techniques seem really easy and make sense, and came across it on Pinterest. Nicely done, your sister looks gorgeous in the after pic with the natural look. Btw I’m from utah too, wahoo!
Hello! This is the first time I left a comment on your blog and wanted to say that I love the makeup you have done – especially in the eyes. Could you please make a tutorial of her eye makeup? Because the shape of my eyes are similar to hers and I never know how to do my makeup to look so beautiful and natural… Please! Thank you so much!! 🙂
I gasped when I saw the before picture bc it looks EXACTLY LIKE MY NEIGHBOR. The only diff is that she also puts dark shadow on the brow bone and the chalky white on the lid. Add in the missing brows, harsh liner, excess foundation, no blush and stringy hair. I would love to see one on the liner. I tried it this morning, and it was still too much. Your sister looks amazing. The difference is incredible.
This is genius!! I love it!! Thanks so much for all the tips! I think most of us see that we want to fix something and think ‘oh I’ll just load up on make up and that will make everything better’! Clearly not so! I’m pretty new to your blog but do you have a video tutorial where you show how, step by step, to apply make up like this? I learn much better from watching videos instead of guessing what exactly is suppose to be done or how much etc. Love your blog 🙂
Definitely some tips on there that I even found useful and I like to think of myself as being pretty good with makeup (I focus too much on having perfect eye shadow). But you would not believe how many girls in my home town ALL where their makeup like that and it just doesn’t look good. I think you really highlighted her natural beauty, rather than trying to hide her imperfections. Sometimes I also think it’s easier to do someone else’s makeup since you aren’t so focused on their imperfections.
Hi, I LOVE your blog and all of the tips and tricks. This tutorial especially, is so wonderful because I prefer a more subdued look for day to day and there are a couple tips that I know I can put to use to make a difference. My main issue is I USED to have nice shapely eyebrows and then I went to the wrong salon to have them waxed/reshaped and the tech did like pen line brows on me…they are VERY thin and I find it extremely difficult to “fill them in” without looking like a clown. PLEASE HELP me, I hate them. I have tried to let them grow in, but they just won’t. It has been about 5 years and I still haven’t found a solution to the problem. Is there anything I can do to make them look “natural” and shapely again? Any advice would be appreciated! And again, LOVE you blog, pinned this link to pinterest!
I love your blog and I have learned so many great tricks and found so many amazing (inexpensive) products from it. Your HAC post CHANGED MY LIFE! That St.Ives moisturizer is a dream come true. If the before and after photos on this post don’t convince people to change their ways, I don’t know what would. Keep them coming, we love reading them.
wow. just wow. i need to stop taking makeup tips from Kate Moss.
Oh wow. She looks incredible. :O Would love to see this as a tutorial, yes, simply because provided it doesn’t take hours, I would ideally do my makeup this way every day. She just looks really fresh and natural. 😀
Hi, I loved this, amazing how bad make up made your sister look so… well awful, though she seems to be smirking in the pic ha ha I would be too. I was just wondering about the eyelashes though, they look so long and pretty, are they real or what Mascara have you used, sorry if you have already answered this but there was a lot of comments to read!
Thank you for sharing these tips, definitely an eye-opener! I just have a question about brows, mine are very thick and fairly dark against my fair skin( I’m a redhead). I tend to pluck them too much on each end, resulting in a stunted look. I’d like to let the bare areas grow out a bit, but the short hairs growing back in look awful! Also, I’m not sure how much to pluck above and below the brow. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
I have a question: How did you line the top lid? Did you just smudge a pencil eyeliner?
Great advice – I enjoyed the read, but it’s frustrating reading this post without photos to show on the spot.
I have fair skin and blue eyes, but don’t wear much makeup because I can’t use any powder products because the granules get into my eyes and give me an eye infection (I know, nerdy right?) and I don’t really know what colors to use with my fair coloring. Do you have any suggestions for products and colors to use?
Please make a video of all of this. I am thinking of how many people I knew that didn’t have a mother, sister or friend that showed how to apply make-up and tried to figure it out on their own. I sent my daughter the link because I don’t wear much make-up myself and I’ve always said to her “Less is more.” She has listened, but this would help her immensely!
I use a pencil eyeliner and it makes it so much easier to keep it from getting too harsh. The more you use it, the softer it gets and the easier it goes on. The rest of these tips – love, love love! Thank you so much.
I’d love an eyebrow tutorial video! I don’t have much of a natural arch so I’d love one that addressed that. Also, mine are sparser than I would like so it’d be nice to see how to deal with that. Thanks!
These are some great tips! She looks so much different in each picture!
Another common mistake IMO is the overuse of mascara!! A few coats of a good mascara is the way to go, not so many layers that it all clumps like crazy and makes you look like you only have a few super-thick strands of eyelashes because they’ve all stuck together.
This is how most korean women do their make-up, most of the time they skip contouring and blush.
This is AMAZING!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a Youtube video of this!!! 😀 You’re so talented!
I can’t get the hang out contouring! I use a matte bronzer, but no matter what, I feel like it’s just too dark!!! When I put make-up on I have a hard time knowing if it actually looks good or not!!

I just found your blog and I love it!!! My biggest issue is finding a foundation that matches my skin tone. I have been matched at mac and sephora. It always looks great in the store, but when I leave it looks way to dark… Any help would be amazing!! I’ve lost hope in finding my color
Wow great post 🙂 definitely picked up some tips especially the harsh eyeliner! Thank you xoxo

OMG – I just saw this on Pinterest and it made my heart sing!!! SO many times when girls start wearing makup they don’t know how to do it, and just line their eyes with a black eyeliner (more like a crayon!) and call it good. So thank you so much for educating everyone!
I am a ginger, so I’m very pale with VERY rosy cheeks and five bazillion freckles. I am always caking on foundation to even out my face. Do you have a way to make my face look naturally even?
how funny you should ask! I am writing a post just for gingers RIGHT NOW! check back tomorrow love!
THANK YOU! That was a great help! I know you probably get this a lot, but you are truly amazing at what you do!!!!!
Hi I am very pale and blonde I get washed out by lack of color very easily. But when I use bronzer I look like an umpa-lumpa. How do I get rid of the red in my face without washing out or looking like barbie gone wrong?
I looked through most of the comments and I didn’t find an answer to this question so i will ask it personally. I have very red skin, my hands and arms have a redish pigmentation to them and this ofcourse includes my face where my cheeks are very red all of the time. I thought maybe my face was sensitive so I started Aveeno’s claiming face wash but I dont seem to see a difference in red-ness after several weeks so I’m thinking that might not be it. I love cosplaying and I would love to be able to have pictures taken of me that don’t have my face all red and I was just looking for advice on that:-)
Cara, what suggestions do you have for older women (60+) who have dark brows that are graying? I can’t pluck the gray hairs cause I’d have too many gaps in my brows! I’m open to any suggestions you or your followers may have. Please help!!!
I love this look! What curler did you use to curl her hair?
I’m guilty of using harsh black liner on my eyes. I would love to see a video on how you “line the eyes in the tear line and then blend with a lighter color of eyeshadow”. Her eye make-up in the after photo is amazing, so pretty. Also, I would like a tutorial on how to do a smokey eye. I can never get it right.
Oh man, I’ve committed several of these blunders. I can’t believe it because doing makeup the right way makes you look so much more natural, like you just woke up looking amazing. How can I have it so backwards??
As a recent bride, I would say that this is too light for a bridal tutorial. Though your sisters makeup is beautiful, she would need to put it on much darker in order for it to show up like this in the wedding photographs, especially any shots outside. That’s the rule of thumb I’ve heard from so many people and witnessed in so many friends.
Cara – Did you use false eye lashes or mascara? If mascara – what?
I did use one cluster of falsies in her outer corners but mostly it’s just Benefit They’re Real mascara, it’s amazing!

I have natural blond hair with blond eyebrows. I have been using ELFs blond duo for a few years now and I LOVE it! The only thing I have found that isn’t too dark and the gel side is way easier to use than a pencil. Plus ELF is super cheap!
I’m really horrible with make-up, from growing up in an all guy house. Honestly I only started experimenting with make-up and hair styles about six months ago. Thank you for the tips and I’ll be back for more if these work out. I really like the eyebrow tip. I have thin brows also and a really round face, so sometimes I look off. Hopefully this will help.
This is so crazy. She went from looking like a freshman in high school who is new at makeup and hasn’t gotten a proper tutorial, to a senior graduating from college looking to make a great impression at her first real job 🙂 I have no idea how old she is but it’s just so crazy how a little thing like makeup could bring out maturity (not in the age sense of that word) and grace and beauty.
She looks like Megan Fox in the after!!! I want to try this look!

Can anyone recommend a product to be used instead of foundation. I just don’t like the feel of the foundation even the liquid ones.
i have a problem filling in my eyebrows as well, im a strawberry blonde, but my eyebrows are blonde, and it seems “blonde” eyebrow pencils are to brown for me and i have yet to find an eyebrow pencil made for redheads. any suggestions?

I’m really terrible with makeup and this, to me, is such a help. I’m going to be a bridesmaid in a wedding coming up and we have to do our own makeup. I think this look is PERFECT for the wedding. Thank you so much!! Her eyes look so beautiful and fresh!
Cara – thank you so much for this! I’m a makeup newbie (28, but a little late to the party…) Your HAC tips have made SUCH a huge difference in how I view myself. I also wanted to say “thanks” for recommending a moisturizer that won’t break the bank! I’ve asked dozens of stylists and estheticians and they all recommend creams that are easily $45-75, which I can’t always afford… Good to know there’s a good alternative! I don’t have problematic skin, so huge amounts of money on moisturizers just didn’t make a lot of sense…
Every tutorial you post is genius. I pimp your site to all my friends. Way to be awesome. xoxo
For your Eyebrow video, I wish I knew how I should shape my brows based on my face shape. I don’t know where to arc them or how to achieve that deep gorgeous brow you have!!
I also have blonde eyebrows and color my hair to a dark red. It looks great with my blue eyes. I angle brush my eyebrows in also, it looks great for a few hrs but by the end of the day, you can tell where I rub my face and only have half of my brows left!!! Its a joke at work, if its a bad day, more of my eye brows are gone! I have thought about tattooing them. What is your thoughts about that? I just hate when my eye brows sweat off or rub off! Can that be stopped?
Wow!! I’m not a huge makeup user but the difference between makeup gone wrong and makeup well done here is so dramatic! Great job, you explained everything so clearly!
can i just say im addicted to your blog, like latterly i apply all of the advice you post here 🙂
can you please do a heatless curls tutorial ?? that would be awesome

I have a question…I’m pretty pale and I think I put on enough make up, but I ALWAYS end up looking washed out in pictures. I love being pale…some people pull off tan very nicely, but I’m not one of them and I’ve embraced it 🙂
Anyway, what is a good way to look good in pictures? I’ve been doing HAC but I must not be doing it right 🙁
Do you apply the Nars Sheer Glow with a brush? If so, which one do you use? Sorry if you’ve answered this before ( I tried searching brushes on your site and didn’t find anything). Your site is A-mazing, by the way, and I’m totally going to try the Nars Sheer Glow when my Sheer Cover runs out. ..just not sure the best way to apply it to get the results like you get. I’ve been using Sheer Cover for a few years now, so I kinda feel like I’m starting from scratch going back to liquid foundation again!
I have red hair and blonde eyebrows with very fair skin. I have yet to find anything that works and looks at least somewhat okay. I have tried all blondes light browns and some reds but they all look clowny no matter what I do. Can anyone suggest something?
Personally, I think it’d be a gorgeous bridal look. Its very sincere and soft, I love that. This whole post is great, my boyfriend is recently trying to take his crossdressing to a more passable, realistic level and this will definitely be a huge help in that arena.
Most common makeup mishaps. | Quotes ~ Word that Speaks
I am probably a lot older than you. I am 51. I am dependent on the hair dresser to wax my brows because I cannot see well enough to do them myself. I have grey hair, grey and black eyebrows, dark brown eyes, fair skin. I wear eye shadow occasionally because a friend of mine sells Mary Kay. Because I can only see out of the left eye, I’m not sure if I’m putting on too much or too little on either eye. I do not know what style hair to go with. Right now, I have it parted on the side, so that the bangs hang over a little on the left. This is kind of awkward because I need to see with that eye and yet if I let them hang over the right, it makes it more impossible to see when someone is approaching me. I don’t suppose you can look at my picture on facebook and give me hints? Anyway, I appreciate your articles.

I actually know someone who applies her eyeliner and foundation just like that in the “before” picture. She applies her lip liner and lipstick the same way as she applies her eyeliner, but in a pink frosty color. Yikes!!! It is a very drab very unflattering look. I would love for you to do a makeover, or rather a makeunder on her. You have magician hands! I totally love the “after” picture! To say she looks amazing is an understatement. She’s your sister you say? Great family genes! 🙂

Hi Cara! I love your looks! I know a while back you did a blended eyeliner video, but is there any way you could redo this look or something completely similar? This is absolutely gorgeous, and I never get my blended liner to look this beautiful. This is really the most beautiful everyday look ever, and I’ve been trying to wear less makeup, so it’d be awesome to see more blended liner looks like this!

Can you give any advice or help, please????
[…] This is one of my biggest pet peeves. No matter what color of eyeliner you choose, if it’s applied like a marker, it’s going to look harsh. This doesn’t do your beautiful eyes any justice. To achieve a more natural look, use a pencil liner instead of a liquid liner. And, a lot of pencil liners come with a blending brush on the opposite end– use it! Cara from Maskcara has a ton of great beauty tips, and I especially like the way she blends her eyeliner. Check it out here. […]

Wow! It is such a difference, that I didn’t even realize it was the SAME girl. I honestly thought they were sisters lol. It’s crazy what makeup can do, and especially the difference the WRONG makeup can make. She looks beautiful and natural in the after shot. Though I think for a wedding, her makeup should be a little more intense, especially for pictures. You need a little more in photographs for it to look nice, IMO.

I would like to let all know that the size of your Penis really matters in your relationship or marriage. I got married to my wife about 1 month after we met on a photo studio, we lived happily for the first 3 months of our marriage until i and my wife started having quarrels at home because i couldn’t satisfy her on bed with my little penis. Actually my penis was very small, it measured about 4.5 inch long on erection and i am 39 years old. My wife said it was forbidden by the women of this world. My wife started sleeping with other men outside. Sometimes i will return from work without finding my wife at home and whenever i call or ask her where she was, she will always snub at me and sometimes just tell me to go get a larger dick. All this continued for a long time and it hurt me so much that i was at the edge of breaking up on the marriage till when i read about a doctor called DR.Moses Buba. online. I never thought i could smile and be in a happy marriage again if not for the help of DR.Moses Buba. I got the doctors Emails:([email protected] ) on the internet and i emailed him, and he got back to me with some encouraging words, he got me some herbs cream which i use for just 8 days and i began to feel the enlargement of my penis, and without surgery. This went on for a little period of about 10 days and to my surprise my wife keeps screaming that she love my big dick now. Now my wife no longer cheat on me, and my penis is now about 10.5 inches long on erection and off course very large round. And now my wife uses breasts, hips and bums enlargement. I and my wife are very happy for the help rendered to me by DR.Moses Buba, and i want to say a big thanks to Doctor for the help. All this continued for a long time and it hurt me so much that i was at the edge of breaking up on the marriage till when i read about a doctor called DR.OMOHAN. online. I never thought i could smile and be in a happy marriage again if not for the help of DR.OMOHAN. I and my wife are very happy for the help rendered to me by DR.OMOHAN , and i want to say a big thanks to Doctor for the help. You can contact the Doctor now on his Email:( [email protected] ) Am thankful to the doctor for helping me.
