Hi guys, I actually stumble on the musical after my fascination with Austrian history grew from my visit to Central Europe. Including Vienna, so here is my review on the populaire German musical base on the Empress of Austria-Hungary.
The Story
Okay, as toi all maybe familiar with the Romy Schneider's Sissi Trilogy films. This musical is another classic example of the Empress's life, however unlike the trilogy and the 90's animated series which portrays Sissi's relationship with Franz Joseph as a happy and lovely couple. The musical is actually a straightforward biopic story.
Her life is somewhat similar to the late Princess Diana, in which she could not handle the Viennese Imperial Court all on her own. She also had a strained relationship with her mother-in-law, who happens to be her aunt! Her relationship with the her husband was cordial and he did ask her to come back, but sadly she declined. Her only son died at Mayerling after an attempt with the Hungarians to gain independence from the empire, an incident which did not happen in real-life!
The Characters
As mentioned, all of the characters are identical to their real-life counterparts. The Emperor actually montrer remorse about his relationship with his spouse and he did try to get hold of her during her frequent travels, his relationship with his only son, the Crown Prince Rudolf is strained because of the different political situation that they were going through.
Der Tod (The Death in German) was a dashing young man who is caught in a l’amour triangle with Sissi and the Emperor. Ultimately, he won in the end par passing the murder weapon, the dagger to Luigi Lucheni, who is the narrator for the whole musical.
Speaking of Luigi Lucheni, he did serve some comedic side throughout the musical but in a sinister manner at the same time.
I had always feel bad for Rudolf because he was isolated from both of his parents, with his friendship with Death serves as the catalyst for his demise at Mayerling!
The Songs
Like the stereotypical Disney Princess 'I want' songs, 'Ich Gehor Nur Mir' (I Belong to Me in German) serves as Sissi's 'I want' song. It became my favourite song since seeing the musical on Youtube, that toi can't get it out of my head!
As a matter of fact, all of the songs are memorable and wonderful, that toi want to sing along ou buying the soundtrack.
I Belong to Me
So there toi have it, my review on the famous German musical, it was so populaire that it starts playing in Austria, Germany, the Netherland, Belgium, Finland, Japan, and South Korea. Go ahead and watch the musical on Youtube!
