"Dear Our Shared Shelf,

This book isn't strictly just a book - it's a play that became a political movement that became a world-wide phenomenon. Just say the titre The Vagina Monologues and, even now, twenty years after Eve Ensler first performed her ground-breaking show, the words feel radical. I'm very excited about spending the months of January and February lire and discussing a book/play that has literally changed lives.

The first person's life it changed was the feminist playwright Eve Ensler's. She says she didn't so much 'write' her play as act as a conduit for other women's stories. She had become fascinated par how the word 'vagina' was never spoken, and how the vagina itself was kept in the dark as if it was something shameful to discuss. So she started interviewing women about their vaginas - getting them to open up to her. Once women started talking, the stories came thick and fast, and Eve put them together into a series of monologues to be performed on stage.

Are we going to exclaim, “Wow, Emma Watson can really sing!”
Bill Condon [director]: Yes! She sort of had to and wanted to prove she could do it. She had always loved singing, but in those years of doing Harry Potter she hadn't done it. She got her voice back in shape, took lessons and then there it was! This beautiful, sweet, pure sound that she has. It is interesting.
We don't usually think about movie stars being able to sing, and then they do it. Some people's voices just reveal something about themselves and seem like the essence of them. Emma is one of those people, there's a natural connection from the way that she speaks and the way she sings.

Can toi talk about the three new songs added to the movie?
Bill Condon: We keep all the songs from the original film, but in this translation, we expanded upon how Belle and the Beast become who they are when we meet them. Two of the new songs connect to that new material. “Days in the Sun,” in particular, is sung par Belle and has plus to do with the household staff and how they see the future when the curse is lifted. But it's also as a song the Beast's mother sang to him when he was a boy. So...

"Dear Our Shared Shelf,

November and December’s book will be Mom & Me & Mom, Maya Angelou’s final work, published a an before her death, in 2013, when she was 85 years old. It was the first book to focus on her mother, Vivian Baxter, who abandoned Angelou when she was a child and it portrays their complicated relationship. The story is about the special connection between mother and child; both women found a way to déplacer on and form a profound and enduring bond of l’amour and support.

Many of toi may be familiar with Angelou’s 1969 classic, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, but that was just the first of seven works of autobiography. And, despite the length of time between their publications, some have referred to Mom & Me & Mom as a spiritual sequel to this first book. Angelou revisits episodes and people in her life mentioned in her précédant works in a different context and all focused around her relationship with her mother.

Thank toi President Mutharika for being a #HeForShe Impact Champion and for making gender equality a priority in your Government! Thank toi to all the traditional leaders who are implementing President Mutharika's policies - especially Chief Kachindamoto (she’s in the photo with me, she’s formidable and has been nicknamed “The Terminator”!). With the help and collaboration of her local chiefs, mothers’ groups and religious leaders she has managed to annul almost 1500 child marriages, sending the girls back to school. President Mutharika has committed to make child marriage a thing of the past in Malawi within the suivant five years. Face to face with Emma Watson. The ex Hermione from Harry Potter is now in the cinemas with a new political thriller, which talks about the Chilean coup d'état in 1973.

—————

Barbara Tarricone: "Dear friends, we are here to talk to with a talented actress, wise and with Rebelle choices. We know her as Hermione, but now there is a new chapter of her life. We find her as a very strong character in the thriller << Colonia >>. She's Emma Watson and it is a pleasure to meet you. toi did so many Rebelle roles after Harry Potter, expecially this one."

Emma: "Yes, I was very attracted for the role of Lena. She's a very fighting and reckless character. I thought: << Wow! I would like to be her one day! >> She's has very dynamic and fighting soul. "It's fascinating, in a really terrible way, but there are just so many angles to explore. We all need to digest it every jour on set. Me and Emma are staying in the same hotel so we have dîner together and talk it through. She has it a lot harder than I do though..."

Emma Watson:

This is my first chance to really develop and see a character through from beginning to end. You're the person that the audience sees the story through. It's a subtle difference, but it's there. I'm... carrying the film. It's cool. It's really cool.

"The first thing toi do is Google Colonia Dignidad... I did that, and as soon as I did, I was reluctant to read the script. Dear Our Shared Shelf,

Our suivant book will be Persepolis, a graphic novel that serves as the memoir of the author, Marjane Satrapi. It's about a bold and Rebelle young woman and her experiences in 1980s Iran.

Persepolis was first published in French in 2003 and like Art Spiegelman's Maus (which was about the Holocaust and was the first graphic novel to win the Pulitzer Prize) is now widely considered a classic of the graphic novel form.

Satrapi grew up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and its aftermath; Persepolis is the story of her childhood. Through Marji's youthful (though not-always-innocent) eyes and mind, we see a turbulent moment in history unfold, and we witness the tremendous impact that local and global events and politics can have on even the most intimate moments of personal lives. We experience with Marji her day-to-day dreams and struggles, from family strife to wrestling with religious faith and custom. We're swept up in her parents' anxieties and her grandmother's memories of an utterly different era. And we get a very real sense of what it was like to be a woman in Iran during this intense...

Emma's preface:

'I will preface this par saying - anything that makes navigating being a teenage girl even slightly easier is a godsend. This book is not for the faint-hearted (think lots of swearing, pictures of vaginas and "patriarchy busting"), but frankly I think that might be what we need - a book that unapologetically addresses what teenage girls are really dealing with. Don't understand what your teenage daughter is going through or, even if toi do, how to help her tackle it? This is the book for toi and for her. So necessary. SO timely. Thorough. Straightforward. Well researched. Intelligent. 0% patronizing. Hopefully we can save a few plus women some years of self-loathing and "what's wrong with me" questions.'

Dear OSS,

I've been searching high and low for our suivant book. The club has been much plus international than I had anticipated - and much bigger. I'm really proud of my club members - discussion-wise - toi are all hitting it out of the park. I'm having to find livres that are accessible, cover multiple perspectives and languages, that are unique and not too well known already... So without further ado...

Our suivant book is going to be The Argonauts, par Maggie Nelson. The story is about the author’s relationship with artist Harry Dodge, who is fluidly gendered. It's about their romance, the birth of their son, the death of Harry’s mother and their changing bodies, as Maggie becomes pregnant and Harry undergoes surgery, but it’s also about inclusion and the powers and shortfalls of language. It might require a bit of work but The Argonauts rewards us with an expansive way of considering identity, caretaking, and freedom—along with a liberation from, what Maggie calls, “the demand that anyone live a life that’s all one thing.” I am excited to read this book with you. Maybe it will change the way we think and speak...

In our 'Girl Crush' series, women with mutual admiration for one another get together for conversations that offer illuminating looks into what it's like to be a woman right now.

When we look back at this moment as a period in time when women started talking about feminism and identifying as feminists with a passion not seen for many years, some of the high watermarks in this fourth-wave resurgence will be Beyoncé's 2014 VMAs performance, Malala Yousafzai's Nobel Peace Prize acceptance and, of course, Emma Watson's stirring speech at the United Nations. Emma's moving words and her work promoting gender equality through the UN's HeForShe movement provided the first real introduction to the concept for many young women (and men). For her part, the actress says she's identified as a feminist since she was a kid, but she also credits writer, artist, intellectual, and feminist icone cloche, bell Hooks, auteur of Feminism is for Everybody among many other key texts, with inspiring her and helping shape her understanding and beliefs through her essays, books, and videos. Last summer, over thé for two in a Londres hotel — because that, readers, is how we rock 'n' roll — we began a conversation about women and men, our differences and similarities, what unites us and what divides us. We talked about Friends and families, about situations at work and at home, and about how fevered and fraught the débats around gender equality has become.

It is, of course, one of the great conversations a woman and a man can have — well, OK, maybe not, but it beats the old do-you-come-here-often? routine — and we've been having it, in one form ou another, since we were cavewomen and cavemen. (Cavepeople? Cavepersons? Gosh, it's a minefield, isn't it? Troglodytes?)

Actually, perhaps the truth is that women have been trying to have this conversation for millennia, and men have been ignoring them, ou talking over them, ou offering well-meant but ultimately unhelpful "logical" solutions before shoving off to the pub, leaving Ms Troglodyte to get on with the cooking, cleaning and child-rearing. toi can see why she might have wanted to have a chat.

Translated par Watsonuncensored. (Thank toi so much)

The British actress Emma Watson has become a model for many young women. In an interview with FR, she explains how she found herself and has overcome the hype after the Harry Potter films.

For at least a generation of moviegoers, Emma Watson will probably always remain Hermione Granger, the best friend of Harry Potter. She tried to distance herself from this image, and unlike many other child-stars, she was definitely successful. In her new film Colonia Dignidad, she plays a young woman in the Chile of 1973, in the turmoil of General Pinochet's regime of terror. A film with a firm political statement. We meet a cheerful Emma Watson in a luxury suite of London's Corinthia Hotels. She wears a dress of her favori designer Alexander McQueen and black boots. Her short haircut à la Mia Farrow is dark brown, her nails blood red. She sits in front of a steaming cup of green tea, which she'll look at, thoughtful, repeatedly during the interview, but will never drink from it. She greeted me with a firm handshake and immediately looked for eye contact. She is petite,...
