They've been separated for months, almost a year, and she's been asleep for seasons. Aurora is only asleep for hours and been separated from Phillip just as long.

He was imprisoned (he thought he would be for the rest of his life), but when he escapes, he still goes to wake his love. He fights and kills dragon Maleficent, cuts through the thorns, and eventually makes his way up the tower to kiss Aurora.

It was a lot more heroic and he risked everything to free her from the spell.
