A Mary Sue is an idealized character meant to be the Author Avatar (a character who shares traits with the author like name, appearance, beliefs, etc.) or a self-insert character for the reader to live through. Common Sue traits (note, having a few of these to a degree doesn’t necessarily make a true Sue):

-Exceptionally popular/gets lots of attention, even if the Sue is *supposed* to be shy, anti-social, or socially awkward. People are drawn to her, her advice is great, and she’s trusted fairly quickly.

-Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous (and usually get a comeuppance)

-Has no real flaws, or ones that are meant to be endearing and relatable (popular ones are clumsiness, temper, awkward, and stubbornness) that are justified by the author or not even intentionally written. These ‘flaws’ will ONLY help her, never hurt her because she’s always right. (For example, she’s rightfully stubborn against something bad or she loses her temper on someone who deserves it.)

-She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior

-Exceptionally beautiful, often with exotic traits like unusual coloring meant to make her stand out physically.

-Magical tools/weapons

-Magical abilities/traits like wings, healing factor, immortality, etc.

-Unusual pet(s)

-is a Woobie (has a tragic past or crappy life) but is still perfect/likable despite what happened.

-Exceptionally talented or good at things the author deems good. The Sue might be bad at things the author considers stupid (girly things like sewing, fashion, etc. but good at “boyish” stuff or things outside the norm like fighting, reading, or weapons are common). Even if the talent/skill isn’t realistic for the time period (like being a scholar or warrior when you're a medieval peasant, for example).

-Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong. Never gets called out for being wrong, but if they do, the person calling them out is portrayed as a jerk (see above). If she does do something wrong, she’s remorseful and is instantly forgiven.

-Good fashion sense, even if she’s meant to be a rough-and-tumble type or one who doesn’t care about clothes and is effortlessly attractive. Male characters will often comment on how they like this about her.

-Is a Special Snowflake who “isn’t like the other girls”. Something unique, physically or personality-wise, sets her apart from everyone else.

-A Friend to All Living Things. Animals like her and she loves everyone and forgives their imperfections. Willing to protect or risk all for someone she just met recently.

Summed up, the Mary Sue is meant to stand out from everyone else in a good way and is generally portrayed as the ideal character/role model, very cool and universally relatable, usually. Anyone who dislikes the Sue is the one portrayed as in the wrong.

Still trying to choose between her and Jasmine. If anyone has a good argument about either one I might change my vote.

Same as before. All the princesses have some Sue traits, though none are Mary Sues, IMO.

LightningWhite picked jasmin:
The easiest way is to put her to the test. XD

-Exceptionally popular? Not really. If yes, she's the princess (though she never comes out of the palace).
-Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous? Definitely not.
-Has no real flaws? She has a flaw (kinda spoiled and loud)
-She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior? No apparently selfish behavior.
-Exceptionally beautiful? Yes.
-Magical tools/weapons? No.
-Magical abilities/traits? No.
-Unusual pet(s)? Yes, a tiger.
-is a Woobie (has a tragic past or crappy life) but is still perfect/likable despite what happened? No. I don't think Jasmine is very likable.
-Exceptionally talented? No.
-Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong? No.
-Good fashion sense? Yes.
-Is a Special Snowflake? Yes, but then most DPs are.
-A Friend to All Living Things? Not really.

Perhaps Anna also scores low in the test, but she's clumsy, quite likable, and a bit "A Friend to All Living Things."

AprilGhost picked Anna:
She's definitely not a Sue.

-Exceptionally popular/gets lots of attention, even if the Sue is *supposed* to be shy, anti-social, or socially awkward. / No. Of the three people who paid attention to her at the coronation, two only liked her because of her status, and one was her sister.

-Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous / Kind of. But not really. Kristoff challenges Anna, and so does Elsa ("You can't marry a man you just met!" and "Who marries a man they just met!")

-Has no real flaws, or ones that are meant to be endearing and relatable / Well, she does have typical Sue flaws, but they do affect her. Her rashness leads to all of Arendelle freezing. Her clumsiness affects her in the battle against Marshmallow, when she slips. Her bluntness affects her during the FTFTIF Reprise. etc.

-She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior / Oh, Anna suffers consequences, alright. But she learns her lesson. (getting frozen, freezing Arendelle, having her heart broken, etc.)

-Exceptionally beautiful, often with exotic traits like unusual coloring meant to make her stand out physically / No. Perhaps this is just because she's always compared to Elsa, but she's more cute than beautiful.

-Magical tools/weapons / None.

-Magical abilities/traits like wings, healing factor, immortality, etc. / Nope.

-Unusual pet(s) / Yeah. She has a snowman and a reindeer, but I don't think Olaf classifies as a pet.

-is a Woobie (has a tragic past or crappy life) but is still perfect/likable despite what happened / Hmm....kinda. She isn't perfect, but she is likable. Does being shut out by her sister equal tragic past?

-Exceptionally talented or good at things the author deems good. / Not really.

-Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong. / Nope.

-Good fashion sense / Perhaps. I'm not really the one to ask about this.

-Is a Special Snowflake / Not completely sure. I think so, but I'm not sure.

-A Friend to All Living Things. / Yeah.

Total: 5

manu962 picked Elsa:
Isn't Anna loved by everyone? Everyone loves her and trusts her. Elsa was called a monster and till the end Anna was the only one to care about her. She does have magic powers but nobody likes them till the end and she is insecure about them. She is definitely not a Mary-Sue.

CRaZy_rawR picked Pocahontas:
Okay, manu, you seem to think everyone hates Elsa. Honey, trust me Elsa is way more loved than Anna. She always has been. You think we always turn our backs on Elsa. Please calm down claiming she is disliked in every poll that includes her. ^^

Exceptionally popular? No. Her father, Nakoma, Kocoum, and John Smith like her, but the rest of the white race didn't know her personally. And we can't really tell if the rest of her tribe likes her or not.

Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous? Nope.

Has no real flaws? Nope she has a few flaws.

She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior? No, her behavior caused Kocoum's death.

Exceptionally beautiful? Yes

Magical tools/weapons? No.

Magical abilities/traits? No.

Unusual pet(s)? Well, I guess in North America a raccoon is common, but not a common pet so yeah.

is a Woobie (has a tragic past or crappy life) but is still perfect/likable despite what happened? Her mother died, but she definitely doesn't stay perfect from it.

Exceptionally talented? No.

Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong? No.

Good fashion sense? She doesn't seem to care about it, but I wouldn't at it's the best.

Is a Special Snowflake? Yes, like a lot of the DPs.

Friends to all living things? Mhm.

I think I could go either way with Poca, Jasmine, or Anna.

I was going to go for Mulan but I'll just go with who's winning instead:) She is definitely not a Mary Sue because she's definitely not perfect and has only a few Mary Sue traits.

AudreyFreak picked Anna:
about Poca: I don't know about popular cuz we don't really see her interract with others much but they do look to her for guidance despite her just being, what, 18, which is Sue-ish.
and Anna- I would say Elsa is definitely the snowflake (no offense to her, but she's the "different" and "unique" one with superpowers who can't fit in, whereas Anna herself points out she's completely ordinary).

icemily- I disagree. Plenty of people have noted how Sue-like Belle and Rapunzel are. and no, that's not all there is to it, as the list shows. Everyone LOVES to call Bella Swan a Mary Sue but she's very far from perfect. the point is that it's the creator's idea of perfect, she's portrayed as always right.

MaidofOrleans picked Mulan:
She's an incredibly flawed character. She's clumsy, can't do anything right, and becoming a warrior doesn't come easily to her. In fact she's very nearly kicked out during training because Shang thinks she can't handle it! She's not portrayed as a great beauty, and men certainly aren't falling all over her.

lottielabouff picked Ariel:
A heroine well-rounded with very human (yes, I know) flaws, meant to be not necessarily admired as the type of person your parents may want you to be like but rather the kind of girl you'd be best friends with or even you yourself, meant to be a universally relatable heroine.
I myself do not particularly see Mulan as flawed- her flaws, like the Mary Sue's, make her likeable, endearing, and just plain cute (clumsy and stubborn- that's it). Mulan has absolutely no negative qualities and she can kick the bums of well-trained, stronger men twice her size! Idealised, not realistic.
