I like Mulan and Shang's relationship a lot! I love romance in a movie, especially Disney. Sometimes, I would like another relationship like Mulan and Shang, while still keeping the prominently romance type movies.

I feel like love has been such a prominent theme in the DP movies.

Or "yes". As long as they don't make many movies without romance one after another, I'm fine with it. I also like Mulan/Shang's relationship a lot.

I'm actually ok with anything. What I mean is that I'd still like to see films with romance but I'd also like to see some without any and I'm ok with ones that have romance but not as the focus.

I am fine with different amounts of romance. I just hope there is a change there has been thus far and not every romance is the same. What I would like to see most would be a princess who already has a love interest or a fiancé in the beginning of the film or a typical fairytale romance since there has been a while since that. Maybe modern audiences would not be a big fans of fairytale romance but I think love at first sight is a cliche in films for a reason. You do not have to spend so much time of the movie developing the romance with that approach and it works on a musicals that are not entirely realistic.

^ Onyxis, you bring up a good point. I think Disney keeps shooting themselves in the foot by making it so the heroine and love interest meet for the first time during the film, then they have be in love by the end, despite how the the film usually takes place over a few days at most.

It creates this pressure to get two characters who just met to be IN LOVE within a short amount of time, which requires "love at first sight" or careful time managing that just barely lets the two get to know each other ENOUGH that most viewers can buy that they're "in love" after just a few conversations. (Read: Jasmine/Aladdin, Pocahontas/John Smith, Tiana/Naveen, Rapunzel/Flynn, Anna/Kristoff, etc.)

Once in a blue moon Disney will have a plot that takes place longer than a few days and/or the romantic leads will know and interact with each other for longer than a few days (like Belle/Beast and Mulan/Shang), but for the most part it's: "We have to get these two kiddies to meet and fall IN LOVE before the sun sets on the third day" or some equivalent.

I personally wouldn't mind if the characters already knew each other before the film starts (like childhood friends) or if the film involves time skips via song montage that show the characters spending months' or years' worth of time together without bogging down the movie. Like Beauty and the Beast, who spend at least one winter together. Or The Swan Princess, which shows the two spending every summer together from the time they're little, so they know each other backwards and forwards by the time of the "I love you"s.

Romance doesn't necessarily have to happen to the protagonist to satisfy me. For example a loving moment between Merida's parents would be enough.

Romance doesn't bother me much in DP movies. If there are a few more with romance in them, I'm fine with that. :)

@Tygers_Eye You explained it so perfectly. I wish we could see a couple that has been friends and has a more realistic relationship that involves time to get to know each other, more than a few days.

@Tyger_Eye The childhood romance aspect was my favorite part of The Swan Princess (and the only one that worked). I do not know what past Disney film it would fit exactly but if that film had not been made Disney might have tried that in one of their movies already. They have been criticized for short romances for a long time.

And I picked this option but I do not have a problem with no romance either. I just think that after Merida and Elsa there in not a need for immediately have a romance free story. Elsa´s story works as romance free naturally, but I do not want another Merida where the whole point is there is no romance. Once is enough. Although since the most likely next princess is Moana perhaps she should not have a romance. It would most likely again be a road trip romance like Tiana and Naveen´s, Rapunzel and Flynn´s and Anna and Kristoff´s. But Disney should stay away from all road trips for a while in any case.

And honestly my favorite option would be that the love interest dies. It would create drama (and melodrama, it is not always bad). And recently Disney films have been shying away from a bit more mature storytelling. But I know it will never happen and I am not even certain it would work.

I don't really know. I like movies with and without romance. So I'm fine with either of these.

I prefer a DP movie more focused on fantasy, adventure, and friendship. They can added romance but it can be just a side story.
