My Dad's thoughts:
First up is Frozen. At first my dad sort of liked it, but then he was like "So how'd she even get her powers?" Of course I don't know so I'm like "Doesn't say." It continues. "Oh please so all the réponses are in some book? Who made the book?" "What? Trolls that are rocks, that's not even realistic." I started to laugh because well, he was right, he wasn't helping me change my opinion though. "Oh some wise old grandfather, big shock there." "They do realize she's a child, they are probably scaring her, bla bla bla child phycology, mental health, long rant." Yeah he's a phycologist. "They just lock her away? That's going to hurt both girls. Olivia, this is a terrible movie." I'm just like "Well, everybody in the world disagrees with you, it's Disney's highest grossing movie since Lion King. Plus I'm starting to like it more." He just stared at me like "Lion King is par Disney? Nah, I like that better." The movie carries along until Anna and Hans are at the party and Elsa says "You can't marry a man toi just met." My dad got really sassy XD "What- why is she being so rude, didn't she say she did all of this just because she loved her sister. This is stupid she gets upset over nothing, just talk like normal people. I mean she could've talked with her for those years." Anna left Hans in charge and that's when he went on a rampage "What? That's not how a real kingdom works. Bla bla bla in real life bla bla. That's what a mother does, she says I leave the oldest one in charge and she goes off to the grocery store, toi can't just leave a prince that toi aren't married to in charge of an entire kingdom." Then of course it shows Elsa about to sing let it go, it's one of the few things I like in Frozen, but my dad talked over it. "How did she get to that mountain so fast, that's literally impossible it takes days to get that high, especially on foot. How come all of a sudden she can control her powers? What- toi can't make a dress out of ice, that's physically impossible bla bla bla formation of ice bla bla bla. She's getting hyperthermia, she has to, no human ou fairy- whatever she is can survive in that, nope she's dead. Her sister's going to find herself a popsicle." Then Anna loses her horse. "She has on a drape! She's going to die too. Wait how can she fall into a running river, the fairy girl froze everything. Come on, she'd be dead." So I'm like "Don't question the magic of Disney." Ok, so fast vers l'avant, vers l’avant Kirstoff and Anna meet Olaf. "How can she create life, if so why doesn't the château talk as well. Wait, didn't the rock guy say he took away her memory, how does she remember Olaf." Moving to when Anna tries to climb the mountain. "The boy is right, she's going to die if she climbs it." After this he didn't say much about it, until Hans leaves for Anna. "So who's in charge now? The bad guy?" Then they arrive at Elsa's castle. "So she manages to shoot her sister, but she misses the people trying to actually kill her? Also why didn't she try to thaw the kingdom, she's not even trying to be nice to her sister." Then he didn't say anything until the big Hans villain reveal. "That doesn't make sense, he was in synchronization with her, he can't fake that. There's no way that nice prince is the villain. Also after he left surely the château staff would return to her, heck real monarchs even had sex with people right outside the door." I was like plugging my ears because I didn't need to know that. "How did the snowman find her there, he wasn't even around. Ok, she should be dead now. If The prince wanted to kill Elsa, why did he save her before?" He was silent until Anna saved a Elsa from Hans' sword. "She is weak and far away from him, how'd she get there in time? Ok so now, the storm stops, where's the prince guy, he was right there two secondes ago. Wait, so a hug was the act of true love, they just borrowed that from Maleficent." Yeah he watched that movie first so... Anyway he kept talking. "What's wrong with the nice guy giving her the act of true love, he's been nicer to her than her own sister." Then Elsa thaws the kingdom. "They are on a lake, she shouldn't thaw it now, she's going to drown them. They weren't on a bateau where'd that come from? Spring takes WAY longer to come than just seconds. That's sooooo unrealistic. Oh now the prince, shows up where was he the past few minutes. Anna is way to weak to coup de poing him, if anything the ice fairy girl is the only one that has power to do that, and her little coup de poing wouldn't knock him overboard. How are they cheering for her? They don't even know why she punched him." Then ice skating happened. "So what? They just ice skate? She has a kingdom to rule! That's so unprofessional, in real life one of the people in court would've taken that as the perfect time to kill her and take the throne. Not to mention is was very improper from women to wear dresses like that. They'd probably hang her for being a witch. If they are going to rip off a character to be like Queen Elizabeth I, at least make her realistically professional. There would probably be guards with them too, this isn't even real." So that was interesting X3 Idk, I thought my dad's reactions were funny and boring at the same time.
Onto my analysis.
Characters:
Anna- I mean she's the first one we see and she's cute and a normal kid and all, but when I first got the basic plot down, I thought she'd be the one to grow up while Elsa stayed a child and became the villain. I was sorely mistaken. She wakes up with lit head jouer la comédie all modern and frantic- it was obvious she wasn't going to be what I thought, in fact she was the exact opposite. Elsa was plus mature and that surprised me since I thought she'd be the villain. Anna doesn't watch where she's going she lives way to loosely, she gets herself hurt, she ruins cakes, she's seconde to last on my smartest DP liste and she clearly deserves that spot. I don't see the appeal, besides optimistic, determined and clumsy. She's way to naïve and trusting, it's like the staff didn't teach her anything. I get she's been denied love, but she can be Friends with anyone, like Carl and Russell from UP. She can befriend older staff, but she never thinks of that maybe she thinks they are beneath her and I just don't like that she doesn't give them chance and the movie doesn't even really touch on that. global, ensemble I think she's boring she's a discount Rapunzel. She's locked away from people, she's fun awkward clumsy, she's naïve, but bold and optimistic. That's literally Rapunzel with less common sense, less charm and lack of personality. She also makes a huge scene in public, if she would talk to her sister like a normal person this whole thing can be avoided, so even though I blame the parents for this whole thing, I blame Anna for not putting 2 and 2 together.
Elsa- Ok she's corrupt, as in her whole character is because of her parents and their lack of compassion and faith and her, they make her think she's a monster and she needs to stay away from people. She takes this in as a little child so I can't blame her to much. She does what she was taught to do, she uses reason in her own way, but ultimately she doesn't face her problems like she should. Being an adult now, she should have plus to rely on than her parents' word. Also a major hole in her character is how she can associate with other guest at the party, but for some reason she denies confrontation with Anna and something Anna was right about "Why do toi shut me out?" She doesn't shut the world out as she does realize she is going to have to have conversations with people as it's certain to be Queen she's has to make due with being around people, the gloves help so perhaps she feels safe. But if the gloves generally prevent her from her ice powers getting out of control, why does she still want Anna to stay away from her? Then later on she freezes the shackles on her? So is she afraid one jour she'll get mad at Anna and freeze her again? Well, if she doesn't push Anna away and has fun with her, she wouldn't have to worry about that. If anything she should be trying to build a great relationship with Anna so she doesn't have to worry about huffing her, they aren't going to play like when they were kids, so there is no chance of an accident happening again. It's like when Anna doesn't want Kristoff to come into the ice château because "last time I introduced her to a man she froze everything" when those circumstances were completely different. And that's one of my problems, they play it as each time they do something no matter what the position they are in, nope, same outcome and if all the characters think that way I can see how they there would be misunderstandings and conflict because the don't think, act ou talk like normal people. My main thing with Elsa is that she almost as naïve as Anna, but in a composed way and she trust what her parents have layer out for her just a little too much I'm starting to like her better, but global, ensemble a still feel neutral towards her, I guess I have sympathy for her, ou maybe plus understanding, unlike Anna she does carry common knowledge so I give her that. I suppose I'm warming up to her.
Kristoff- Well who is Kristoff? He's a really strange, loner who's only companion is a reindeer. Ha! How lovely? I think he's plus of the logical, socially awkward, rugged ...ice geek? I sort of like him not going to lie. I see myself in him weirdly enough, but like the rest of them, doesn't really use normal thoughts. He leaves Anna, but with the finale demand "Make sure she's safe." Sort of emotional, but unnecessarily vague. Also he didn't really have to leave her, he could've stayed around, but that being one of his only movie type flaws, i think he's sort if charming. He's not the most handsome, he's not the most funny, cheery ou hygienic, but he's practical, a little bug when it comes to ice and he's awkward done right. He still has feelings, but he tells himself he's better off with just Sven, he doesn't know how to act when he has a crush on a girl, he is a fanboy when it comes to ice and it's a little quirk, he wants to always look tuff, but he messes up some times, he's smart and realistic, but he gets stuff wrong. I really like that and though I don't think he's totally amazing, I like him ok. But seriously cut the taureau, bull and get him and Elsa together, ice is his life.
Hans- Boy o' boy, was I looking vers l'avant, vers l’avant to this. Hans what can I say, he's a rushed, scrambled and mistakenly put together villain. He wasn't supposed to be the villain, he genuinely smiles at Anna when no one is looking, he does have mental synchronization with her, but yet he's the villain. Why? I have looked into this and some think why he did have evil intentions he may have fallen for Anna because, like he did for her, she was the first person to montrer him any compassion ou affection. And perhaps Hans couldn't bare to look at Anna die and wanted to Kiss her, but couldn't bring himself to do it. It's all theory in his character and really that would make a really good character, but it doesn't touch on it, so it's most probable it's not there. Fact of the matter is he IS a rushed plot device. The directors didn't want to make Elsa the villain anymore, they didn't want Anna to choose between two fairly decent guys, the Duke of WeaselTown was a fairly lame villain. I imagine their thought process was "Uh, ok so we don't want Anna to choose, Elsa can't be the villain anymore and duke is weak, well the problem is Hans he's too perfect for Anna- wait maybe we can make him flawed and turn him into a really badly put together villain, yeah, now Anna doesn't have to choose, Elsa can be right and problem solved." Really it was a bad decision and I can't properly deduce a conclusion to this character nor can I comprehend what to think of him, since it's not clear. Is he a good actor? Is he really complicated? Is he just a script change gone wrong for a cheap mix up? I'm going with the last one and frankly he's a disappointment, so I dislike this character, which is a shame because he's quite attractive.
Sven- Oh my, I wonder where this idea came from *sarcasm* it's so original. Anyway yeah, this is a discount Maximus. He acts like a dog, he has a good heart, yada yada yada- we've seen this all before. He's frankly boring, dull and I didn't find him cute. If you're not going to act like your own species at least be interesting. What I liked about Maximus is that he had a duty and he stuck to it, but compromises for the sake of Rapunzel's charm. Maximus gets stuff done, he thinks out things, he is comedically smarter than average people. Maximus was enjoyable. Sven? No, Sven is his cheap remake minus the actual intelligence and comedic personality.
Duke of WeaselTown- The most predictable, boring witless villain I have ever seen. He says his evil plot out loud for nothing plus than an unfunny joke. He dances around frivolously trying to get- what? A confession out of Anna? Way to be subtle. ou maybe he was the one to exploit Elsa as the villain. And some films do have sub-villains, but he was done so much for laughs a can't take him seriously enough to be a threat. Which was another problem they created at the start of this movie. Really, it isn't even a question, I definitely dislike him. A major Disney disappointment.
Olaf- Ok, yeah I saved him for last. He's funny, his creation makes no sense, but I'd be lying if I a dit I didn't chuckle at one ou two of his lines. I also don't hate Josh Gad, I think he did a fairly decent job. Unlike the rest of the movie Olaf was done well, he's disappears and reappears at the right moments and he is somewhat enjoyable, not bad, but also not my favori character. While his comedy is good the character itself is sloppily done. He has no idea heat melts snow, but has a concept of time and an understanding of language. He's naïve and ditsy and like Anna can't put 2 and 2 together most of the time. I have a mild disliking of him, but most people would find that charming. And, no, Anna, I do not want to build this snowman.
For side characters a generally think the trolls were not needed and unexplained. They do mess everything up, the don't get to the point. They weren't specific enough to Elsa's parents and they diddle-doddle around with l’amour whilst Anna is in the mist of DEATH. Really all they were good for is healing Anna that one time, nothing else really.
Anna and Elsa's parents are a real problem, I will give Pabbie the benefit of the doubt and say that, the parents probably locked her up on their own merits. I mean the troll does say "Fear will be her enemy." And what do the parents do? Fill Elsa with fear, bad parents, bad characters and global, ensemble bad relationships. It's not clear if Elsa's father is saying what he's going to do to the troll, but I don't think the trolls would approve if they heard that. global, ensemble the trolls and the parents are part of the problem, not the solution, I pretty much feel the same towards both: Unnecessary idiots.
Music:
Do toi Wanna Build A Snowman?- Was I the only one surprised at how it randomly broke into song? Even for disney. I don't like the lyrics, but the Melody gets caught in your head. Not really my type of musical number, but it's ok.
For The First Time In Forever- UGh, could toi possibly get plus modernly frantic? It's full of misconceptions and expectations for what is just naïve wishing and getting hope up to high for heaven. On haut, retour au début of disliking the lyrics, I don't think Kristen cloche, bell can sing, it almost sounds like she's training her voice and tries to be sweet, but she doesn't pull it off all the way. At some points I a dit "Ah, hit it perfectly that's sound goo- oh toi Lost it" she can't hold a note and it often sound sing-songy really high pitch, then sweetly high, then sweetly talking she doesn't quite land on one type and the one she does land on I don't enjoy.
l’amour Is An Open Door (Including reprise)- No, just no. It's teen misconception of l’amour put to a weird Melody, the tempo is all off and the beats are often missed par me. Kristen cloche, bell once again fails to impress me and Hans' voice actor wasn't singing, just talking in rhythm, ou talking to try and pass off as singing. It's all preference at this point and I really don't like this song.
Let It Go- One of my most "mainstream" opinions is that I absolutely l’amour Let It Go, it gets repetitive and that can get boring, but listening to it for the first time it was pretty good. Usually things played over and over don't appeal to me, because of the been there done that sort of mentality. global, ensemble I just like it, it doesn't scream Disney magic, but it's probably one of my favori DP songs- scratch that- Disney songs.
Reindeers Are Better Than People- It's not even a song, it's not catchy, a string of words of no caliber put to a mildly upsetting point. I wish to have no further discussions on the topic.
Fixer Upper- Geez. During the whole song, I was just like "WHY ARE THEY chant ANNA COULD DIE?!" Seriously, what point were they trying to make, the lyrics are one sided and quite frankly preaching to the choir. It has no real, satisfactory balance to it and it made me anxious. Get on with the plot, get on with saving a human's LIFE toi are wasting whatever precious time Anna has left. I don't like the gospel- ou whatever type of musique that is- aspect, I'm just not into it. It's probably the only song in the universe I hate with a passion.
In Summer- Once again I leave Olaf's stuff for last. It's comic relief, Josh Gad isn't chant as much as he is mocking different types of chant voices. It's just naïve lyrics, I really don't like it much, but if it will please the La Reine des Neiges fandom, I don't think it's terrible.
Overall:
One of the many things I don't like about La Reine des Neiges is it's reference to modern pop culture, taking things like "I don't judge," a washed out 'girl power' I don't need a man mentality and it's general frantic style. So, no, I don't like Anna and Elsa's big animé eyes, I don't like it's awkward fast pace characters and I don't like how it thinks it's being clever with that same old "This is the first movie ever to say girls don't need a man, girls shouldn't marry men right away." Because really it's also setting roles for women to play as independent and not every girl is independent and setting roles is the exact opposite of feminism. Maybe it's this I don't like- ou rather it's that everyone thinks it's breaking boundaries that sort ruffles my feathers. I won't count that against the movie, but I'm definitely going to count the pop culture against it.
I l’amour the landscapes and the animation is really good, but CGI isn't my thing and it's choppy editing makes me enjoy those really beautiful scenes much less. A really good point in this movie is when Elsa is building her ice castle, it's one of the most amazing scenes I have even seen in a movie. toi can see hands act like a puppeteer pulling and swaying the ice to her liking and the ice looks PHENOMENAL, especially the detail put into her snowflakes. That being the only scene really enjoyable for me, I wouldn't say that's the best movie. It's flaws stick out a lot and unfortunately one scene isn't enough to save this movie from my distain for it. It's rushed, it's flawed, it was almost ever so clearly made for little kids, because is simplicity and stupidity is too much for adults ou even me to take. I dislike it a good amount to say it's not not worth your time, but most of toi here have already seen it and probably enjoy it. I give it a 2/10 ou a 1/5 I don't see it as all that great and probably never will.
